      Answer This Question

A:  Hello Keith, Scotts Turf Builder Winterguard Fall Lawn Food is a straight fertilizer not made for controlling or preventing weeds. For controlling your fall weeds, we would recommend Scotts Turf Builder WinterGuard Fall Weed & Feed3. Scotts Turf Builder WinterGuard Fall Weed & Feed3 will only control existing weeds, but not prevent. For spring weed prevention use Scotts Halts.

Q:Can Turf builder for Fall be applied within a short time after overseeding an existing lawn?

            Answer This Question

A:  Hello Pete, Scotts Turf Builder Winterguard Fall Lawn Food is safe to be applied the same day when overseeding/seeding/sodding a lawn. Note, that while regular lawn fertilizer will not inhibit seed germination, and therefore can technically be applied anytime before or after seeding/sodding the lawn, it does not help it as much as a Starter Lawn Food which contains phosphorous. Phosphorous (P) is very important for seed germination and establishment. In fact, applying nitrogen without applying phosphorous gives the same results as applying no fertilizer at all when seeding or sodding. Because of the lack of P in our regular lawn fertilizers, we strongly recommend the use of one of the following products when initially seeding. These are: Turf Builder Starter Lawn Food for New Lawns, Turf Builder Triple Action for Seeding, or Step 1 for Seeding.

Q:Can this be used for drought impacts during the summer (in place of Scotts weed and feed)?

              Answer This Question

A:  For best results water in Scotts Turf Builder WinterGuard Fall Lawn Food (approximately 5 minutes of watering) especially if, activity is expected on the lawn, no rain is predicted for the next several days, and temperature exceeds 90°F. As long as grass is actively growing Scotts' fertilizers can be applied. If the lawn is already stressed from heat and drought conditions, then it would be best to delay fertilizing until the lawn is no longer stressed. We recommend supplying at least one inch of water per week to the lawn. If you are unable to water then wait for rain.

                Answer This Question

A:  Scotts Turf Builder Winterguard is not designed for use on ornamentals or mulched areas. If accidentally applied to ornamentals, wash immediately off the plants. In addition, it should not be used in areas where grazers (like chickens) are kept.
