Q:We live in a home built in 1936 and the handrail in the stair way is extremely heavy. I broke part of it when trying to fix a screw (laid it down when I shouldn’t have and the bracket broke). Will this work on that. The railing weighs about 30lbs. and the walls are plaster.

Answer This Question

A:  Hi WBW328, this is a great question. Depending on where you live, there are building codes that apply to how handrail brackets are to be installed. Best practices are to have the handrail brackets attached to the wall by drilling through drywall (or in your case, the plaster/lathe), and anchoring the bracket to the wall by drilling a screw into a supporting stud. The brackets should never be attached using drywall anchors, or with screws drilled into drywall or plaster alone. The screws must be anchored into a stud behind the wall. Depending on the thickness of your plaster/lathe, you may have to use a flat-head screw that is 1-3/4 in. to 2-1/4 in. long to secure it properly. Brackets must be installed every 3-4 ft. along with run. When installed correctly, these brackets should perform as intended for your handrail. If you have additional questions or need more information, we'll reply as quickly as we can. Thank you.

A:  I would think you would want to replace all of the handrail brackets, not just the broken one so they all look the same. The 30# weight is not an issue for these brackets.

Q:Can I attach this to a wrought iron post?

    Answer This Question

A:  Hi Stephanie, thanks for the question. Our handrail brackets are designed to be installed using wood handrails, though there is no "law" saying one can't use them with wrought iron. If that's what you want to do, it would require self-tapping screws, and/or pre-drilling holes into the iron handrail, or other fastening methods with which we aren't familiar. You may want to consult with a contractor who is experienced with that type of construction as to whether your idea is feasible. If you have additional questions, we will do our best to help you, and reply as quickly as we can. Thank you.

A:  If you can drill into the iron post it would work. Maybe a lag bolt would be needed in place of the screw provided

A:  Hi Will, you will need to purchase concrete anchors to hold the screw that is used with these brackets. Consult with the Associates in the Hardware Department to insure you purchase the best anchors for your handrail brackets. Thank you.

Q:does the handrail sit on the round part or the square flat part

          Answer This Question

A:  Hi Poo, the handrail rests on top of the flat part, and is mounted to the wall using a screw through the round part. It's important that the bracket be installed to the wall, with a stud behind the drywall. The screw used to attach to the wall must be attached to a stud. Do not use drywall anchors, or simply attach the wall bracket to the wall "anywhere" along the wall. The screw must go through the drywall and into a stud. If you have additional questions, we'll do our best to reply as quickly as we can. Thank you.

A:  The rectangle flat part. The round part goes against the wall using the larger screw. ☺

A:  Hi Curtis, when installed correctly (into studs, and handrail properly attached), these brackets meet code requirements of 220 lbs direct downward force. Codes may vary in your jurisdiction, so please consult with your local authorities as to the code requirements in your area. If you have additional questions, we'll do our best to answer them as quickly as possible. Thank you.

                  Answer This Question

A:  Hi Paul, our brackets are designed to be used on standard residential handrails. They should be mounted through drywall and into studs for maximum support. Some building codes stipulate how wall brackets are to be installed, so we suggest you check with your local jurisdiction for their standards. If you have additional questions, we'll reply as quickly as we can. Thank you!
