A: Happy to clear things up, Judy! Rust-Oleum Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane is intended for use on interior surfaces only and will not withstand constant exposure to the elements. For exterior surfaces, we recommend using Rust-Oleum Varathane Spar Urethane instead. At this time, we do not offer a thicker coating option for exterior surfaces.

Q:Can this be used on top of Varathane stain+poly? After staining my piece, I realized that the finish isn?t quite as glossy as I?d like(I used a satin). Additionally, I?d like to give it a thicker protective coating than the stain+poly provided.

Answer This Question
A: Happy to help, Tom. Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane is not a waterproofing coating. This product will protect surfaces from scratches and stains, but will not completely waterproof the surface. We recommend removing any spilled liquid on the surface as soon as possible.

Answer This Question
A: Happy to help! Rust-Oleum Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane can be used on interior wood furniture, doors, time, and more. It can be used in homes with pets. Our recommendation is to leave items in a well ventilated area for one week after painting. This allows for the most complete curing as well as maximum coating hardness. As with any coating product, care should be taken to ensure that accidental ingestion does not occur.

Q:I want to make a table top very durable for a rental property. It?s a new table that already has a finish, can I paint this finish on top. It?s a wood table.

Answer This Question
A: If the table is painted with a light color, you may notice that adding the Rust-Oleum Varathane Satin Triple Thick Polyurethane may cause it to yellow. If the colors are dark, and have cured, you can try the product to make sure you're happy with it! If the product is being applied over a stain, the stain should be cured for 5–7 days before applying the polyurethane. We hope this helps! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1

Q:Would this be a good product to coat rough cut cedar without changing the appearance. I was going to use it on a bathroom ceiling, but doesn't to need waterproof just sealed somewhat.
Thanks

Answer This Question
A: We appreciate your interest! Since Rust-Oleum Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane is intended for use on horizontal surfaces. Applying to vertical surfaces or onto ceilings may cause the finish to sag due to how thick the finish is. Applying to a rougher surface may also make it more difficult to achieve an even finish.

Q:Can this be poured and self level.

Answer This Question
A: Thank you for reaching out! Our Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane is designed to be applied thicker than a typical polyurethane finish, however, it should not be poured onto the surface. We recommend using a high-quality, synthetic bristle brush, or applicator pad to apply the polyurethane. If a pour-on finish is desired, we recommend using our Varathane Super Glaze Pour On High Gloss Epoxy: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Gloss-Super-Glaze-Finish-and-Preservative-241352/202056337 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

Answer This Question
A: Hi Madeleine, we responded to your other question on our Varathane Ultimate Water-Based Polyurethane product page. We would consider both that and our Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane equally durable coatings, with the durability mainly affected by the coating thickness. The benefit of our Triple Thick Polyurethane is that it can be applied thicker in a single application, so a couple of coats would be equal to 4-6 coats of our Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane, with less time needed to apply and wait between applications. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2
