Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Julie. If applying Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain to doors or exterior surfaces we recommend top coating using Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Spar Urethane. If the finish has faded we recommend sanding the surface and reapplying a new coat of the stain. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Clear-Satin-Water-Based-Outdoor-Spar-Urethane-250241H/100165652 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q:I have scratched dining chair legs. Can I use this only on the areas where it's needed or do I have to sand all of the legs fully?

        Answer This Question

A:  You can use a thin artist paint brush and only add this stain to the scratched areas. If the scratch is NOT absorbing the stain then multiple coats one on top of the other might be needed to cover. Then protect the area with a wax or poly coat.

            Answer This Question

A:  No. This is a stain only. It is meant to go onto unfinished wood to change the color. If you just want to make your floors more shiny, then lightly sand, clean, and apply a poly top coat. Make sure the poly you use is made for floors and not furniture.

                Answer This Question

A:  We're happy to help. Since Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain and Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil are both penetrating products they cannot be used with each other. Instead, we recommend top coating the stain using Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Polyurethane. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-Gal-Clear-Satin-Water-Based-Interior-Polyurethane-200231/100176203 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Q:Can I use this to restrain a headboard

                  Answer This Question

A:  As long as the headboard is bare wood, Timothy, you can stain the surface using the Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Stain. If you are unable to remove the coating/stain, you run the risk of having the new stain not penetrate in appropriately, which can cause issues with drying. We hope this helps! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 1

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Glenda! Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain is available in several different shades of browns, including Espresso and Aged Walnut. With any application, it is best to apply in a test area first to ensure a favorable color, as the type and cut of the wood will affect the color. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3
