A: Thank you for reaching out. If applying Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain outdoors the wear from the UV and the elements will cause the finish to fade. For added outdoor protection we recommend top coating using Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-Based Spar Urethane. While this can help to add protection the wear from the elements can still cause the finish to fade.

A: We're happy to help, Lori. Since Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain is a penetrating product it can only be applied to bare wood surfaces. We recommend sanding down to bare wood before applying the stain. Not applying to bare wood can hinder the penetrating process and leave a tacky finish.

Answer This Question
A: Thank you for reaching out, Lauren. For the best results, Rust-Oleum Varathane Classic Wood Stain needs to be applied an area with proper ventilation. If the stain remains to smell after ventilating this could mean it hasn't fully cured. Factors like heavy application can impact the stain's ability to fully cure.
