Q:is the rhizomatous tall fescue (RTF) invasive like Bermuda grass? will it spread outside the intended lawn area like through cracks on the surrounding pavement?
    by|Mar 29, 2018
    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  Given time RTF will spread throughout you lawn. Bermuda sends runners just at the soil which can over edging, cracks, and sidewalks. RTF send out underground rhizomes, roots and grows a new plant. These can go under bed edging.

      Answer This Question

A:  It does thin in the summer but comes back nicely in the fall and even better in the spring. It does much better in partial shade than mostly shade and mostly sun.

          Answer This Question

A:  This is 100% tall fescue. It is does not produce very fine grass blades, they are kind of course, but very heat tolerant in western Oregon.

          by|May 9, 2020

A:  Fine fescue grass, however RTF grass is short in height and different shape leaf and you get both. some people claim a lot of weeds from seed, that has not been my experience overall last two years that I have switch over to this product. But once cut without grass you don't notice it. But you save on water usage. Rather not give money local government for high water usage that normal fescue needs.

Q:How do I install this? I bought my house last month and the yard is a wreck, needs some serious landscaping done. I'm not sure what type/kind of grass is in the yard now? There is also some moss and weeds. What is the recommended install for a lawn like mine? Should i tear everything up and start from scratch? Or can i spread this over what i currently have?

A:  Till the soil about 2" deep, spread the seed and cover slightly (about 1/4"). Keep it moist for the first 2 weeks.

A:  I'm not a landscaper, just a homeowner. But I would recommend hiring a landscaper who knows how to kill all the weeds (spray or plastic cover.) Install irrigation sprinklers. Then rototill the ground mixing in a soil amendment such as Topper. Then decide whether to plant seed or pay for an instant sod lawn. I used RTF (rhizomatous tall fescue) sod. Now, years later after dog urine and areas where sprinklers missed watering the grass, I'm filling in bare areas with a rototiller hand tool, mixing in Topper, seed, and covering with manure to keep the birds away. Don't waste good seed on top of weeds. Good Luck!

Q:I was thinking of buying a perennial rye grass (not annual) for my shady lawn area. I live in Texas (Austin) and this caught my eye because it is drought tolerant. But I'd like it to be perennial. Is it?

A:  The fall season when average temperatures are approximately 75 degrees is the best time to plant tall fescue grass seeds. Remember to keep the soil moist at all times to allow the seeds to germinate until the lawn is well established.
