A: Happy to help, Phil. Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac Traditional Interior Finish & Sealer is not FDA approved for food contact. For butcher blocks we recommend using Watco Butcher Block Oil, this is nontoxic and safe for food contact when fully dried (meets government standards of 21 CFR 175.300).

Q:How do you remove this?
by|May 9, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question
A: Hi Simon, thank you for reaching out! Our Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac will dissolve in denatured alcohol, so wiping the coated surface with rags dampened with this solvent can remove most of the shellac. Shellac may also be removed by sanding the wood. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

Q:Can you put artist oil paint over shellac?
by|Apr 21, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question
A: Happy to clear things up, Nina! Since Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac contains wax, other paints will not properly adhere to the surface. If wanting to paint over the surface, we recommend sealing with a product like Rust-Oleum Zinsser SealCoat Universal Sanding Sealer first to ensure the paint properly adheres.

Q:Will this seal pine sap for wood painting project?
by|Apr 16, 2023
2 Answers
Answer This Question
A: Yes. Generally speaking this will seal in pine sap. Maybe it might require a couple of coats, but shellac should do the job.
by|Apr 18, 2023
A: Happy to clear things up! While Rust-Oleum Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac Finish will seal sap streaks, this product cannot be painted over directly. This shellac contains wax, and it will prevent most coatings from properly adhering to it. The surface would need to be sealed with a universal sealer, or you can prime with Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-Based Primer instead. This primer can be painted directly over, and it will also block sap streaks.

Q:Hello, can I use it in my kitchen cabinets, they are painted with water-based paint and I want to apply a protective layer

Answer This Question
A: Thank you for reaching out! For surfaces that get a lot of use, such as cabinets, we would not recommend applying our Zinsser Bulls Eye Shellac. Instead, we recommend protecting the painted cabinets using our Varathane Ultimate Water-Based Polyurethane: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Clear-Satin-Water-Based-Interior-Polyurethane-200241H/100169146 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2

A: Yes you can. However, shellac is not stronger than paint. Also, shellac is not clear.
