Dillo Dirt + Wettest May in history = One LUSH lawn!
I ordered 15 bags of Dillo Dirt online in preparation for laying St. Augustine sod in the large bare areas of my front and backyard. This was my third attempt in as many years and as the first two didn't "take", I resolved to do a better job of prepping this time. Hence the Dillo Dirt. Thankfully, my son + truck was home from college and between the two of us, we put down all 15 bags and a pallet of sod. Then came the rain. Rainiest May in Austin history! As you can see, the new sod is growing like gangbusters & I couldn't be happier with the results!

A bag of weeds. Its a good idea, and when I first moved to Austin I was really happy to purchase Dillo Dirt to apply to my garden and lawn. Sadly since about 2015, Dillo-Dirt is not being allowed to fully compost before its sold. This means you end up with a bag of weeds. Specifically, the worst offender Nut Sedge. Anyone you talk to who has used it recently has had this exact same problem. (I was picking up compost yesterday and chatting with a lady who had this problem last year, we were both making sure we didn't end up with a bag of weeds again.) Even local professionals who used to use it to top-dress yards no longer use it and will even say they refuse to use it when you are getting quotes. I give it 2 stars because I like the renewable aspect of this. But don't use the product, your lawn & garden will thank you.

I'm trying to amend the soil to retain more water. Too early to tell if it will perform as advertised, but I have heard good things about this product from friends.

Dillo Dirt is part of the City of Austin's recycling program. Yard waste is collected, shredded, and mixed with solids removed from sewage. The mix is composted and cured for several months before packaging for reuse. Plants love it. Details: http://www.austintexas.gov/department/dillo-dirt
