  • Be wary of screen replacement
  • May 12, 2014

I am really peeved about the screen panel design. I damaged the screen and went to replace it. This is normally a quick and easy job requiring only a few minutes, a spline roller tool, knife, and a roll of screen material that only costs a few bucks. This Anderson/EMCO door uses a proprietary attachment type instead of the common spline system used on every other window or door screen I have ever encountered. Home Depot does NOT stock the needed tool or retaining strips. Apparently nobody does either. You have to go to Andersen and buy a "kit" for ~$20. I wish the engineering team had spent more time designing a better door instead of finding a way to get more revenue from customers. This door is already wearing out after a few years (only 1-year warranty)

Pros easy to swap window and screen Cons can't easily repair damaged screen

  • "Looks like it's always been there"

This is a very fine door and really is very easy to install. It looks great, has a well designed handle and lock, and closes properly every time. After repeatedly reading and rereading the instructions, it took about 90 minutes to complete the installation. My neighbor--who knows I'm not an all-pro handiman-- viewed the finished door and said, "Wow, it looks like it's always been there." Although the instructions repeatedly emphasize not to try to install the door if the "mount" area is too narrow, use your own judgment on that. Our door had a mount area much narrower than recommended, but it went in just fine, and is very secure. I wasted money on the "narrow mount kit" that turned out not to fit, even though they should have known that I had an 84 inch, not 81 inch door. The only weak part of the door design is the system holding in the detachable screen or glass. It works, but takes some finesse when removing and installing each piece. You have to be careful not to bend the detachable strips the wrong way, or you can ruin them.

looks pretty but...Very cheap door and Andersen's support was weak, i purchased the door and when I installed it, I immediately had a retaining strip break in half. The strips are also difficult to install. Second the closing mechanism was not adjusting properly so the door was closing like a rocket for the first foot and a half. When I called Andersen, they wanted to send me a new closing mechanism and charge me to ship it! I explained i had JUST purchased the door, they want proof before they send a working mechanism. In the meantime the screen was destroyed because the door was closing so fast. I don't have the box and a new broken screen door that cost $250 with the handle.. will Home Depot take it back?

Installation was actually very easy to understand. This is a great addition to our home. My son and I did it in about 1 1/2 hours. Very sturdy and constructed very durably. Could not be happier with Home Depot and Anderson.

  • Good Quality Door, Helps Insulate Very Well, Takes more like 90-120 Minutes to Install w/ 2 People

My boyfriend and our other friend installed this door in an afternoon. You should know that 45 minute installation time is never a 45 minute installation time. We had all the necessary tools (electric drill, bits, level, hand screw driver) which would make things slower if you don't have access to these. I bought the door because my wooden back door was retaining moisture and I could tell that we were wasting electricity by losing hot air out of the cracks between the door and the frame. The very first minute we installed this storm door, we could tell the difference. For me, it was worth the larger price tag because : 1. It's high quality. The door is solid, not flimsy, it has two automatic closures, and it insulates very well. 2. While it didn't take 45 minutes, the installation was significantly quicker than it would have been if it had come less-assembled. 3. It's a very nice looking door. It does not detract from the appearance of our home at all. If anything, it improves on it.

  • Easy to install but not in 45 mins

After the pains of installing a new front door, I wanted the easy installation option for the storm door. I picked the Anderson door because of its fullview style and advertised easy installation. The door was packaged very well. Installation was easy but not as easy as advertised. I am a fairly handy guy and it took me just over an hour. The hardest part of the installation was reading the directions and understanding what to do next. The parts to the door have some unfamiliar names and it took me some time to decipher which was which. The directions also did not cover how to attach the screen/glass retainers. This took me an extra 20 minutes (not included in my install time) and I ended up having to watch an Anderson YouTube video for proper directions. I almost threw the retainers across the yard I was so frustrated at first. Other than that, the directions are great. The door is lightweight without the glass out and I was able to hoist it in place myself. I had a little trouble making sure it was level. The installation kit comes with a drill bit which saved me a trip to my work bench. Another difficult part for me was attaching the rain strip above the door. It took a little finesse as the spot is cramped. All in all, it is a beautiful door and relatively easy to install. It opens and closes well. I highly recommend this door for those wanting a full-view. Just one bit of advice, make sure you check the dimensions for your raw opening before purchasing.

  • It is a quality door but some tips for install
  • November 06, 2014

The door is good quality A few install tips: 1) Leave all orange brackets in place when you open box-They are not packing materials but essential to hanging door. 2) The orange tab on the lockset has 2 black plugs holding it in. They will bend frame pulling, use screwdriver to get below them and pry out. 3) Install the handle into metal plate and turn the handle into the plate only-_DO NOT HAVE IT ON THE DOOR JUST HOLD IT IN HAND AND INSTALL THEN place already TURNED ON DOOR into other plate done same way on other side and tighten . It can't be rotated on door. bad instructions in manual. 4) The bracket to hold the cylinder top and bottom should have pin part facing hinge side of door, instructions do not make this clear.

Pros Good Size & Fit, Easy to Install
