First time using.
This is a first for me using this product on hardwood floors. The product went on good with foam applicator. It was difficult keeping a wet edge to blend the next row or section. The color was perfect for the style I’m going for. It did lift a few spots when applying the poly. I did wait a few hours before I applied the poly finish. I was able to sand out between poly coats but was very frustrated.

    This stuff is awful stain.
It dries pretty much immediately after you put it down which then leaves to uneven staining. There is no time whatsoever to wipe it

Hi Billy7881, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that the stain was drying too fast, making it hard to get an even finish. When the stain is drying too fast, you can add 1/4 ounce of water to an 8-ounce container and it will extend the working time of the stain. Looks great on my stairs!
I had a staircase with ugly carpet, which to my surprise was hiding beautiful oak treads. This was my first diy project as a new home owner. I pulled up the carpet and staples, stripped old paint splotches and varnish off, and sanded three times with my new Milwaukee orbital sander. Then I used the behr wood conditioner, and the behr dark walnut stain. I only did one coat, followed by three coats of behr poly on top. I am really pleased with the results! Thank you behr! I’m

I learned that if you don’t prep the wood correctly it doesn’t stained the wood properly!! The second time I used it turned out a whole lot better due to prepping the surface good.. First time using this stain but everything turned out great!! The left is the better prepared one..

        Worst stain I’ve ever used
Behr typically makes great products, paint has always been amazing. The polyurethane they started pushing the last year or so has been great. This stain however is unusable. Very thick and begins to dry before you can even wipe off. Your left with streaks and unevenness through your project. Just used the dark walnut on a piece of white oak that I will unfortunately have to sand down and start all over tomorrow. Exceptionally disappointed.

Hi Thatts, thank you for taking the time to review our Water-Based Fast Drying Interior Wood Stain. I'm sorry to hear about the streaky and uneven finish of your project. This isn't the experience we want our customers to have. To fix your project, I recommend removing the stain by sanding or using a conventional stripper. Then, ensure the surface is clean and apply our Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner to help you get an even finish. Finally, you can reapply the stain and wipe off the excess after 5-10 minutes. If the stain seems to be drying too fast, you can thin it with up to 4 ounces of water per gallon. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we'd like to help get your project back on track. Please feel free to reach out to us directly so we can further assist. We look forward to hearing from you! -Christina Behr
          Worst Stain Ever!
Put this can of stain where it belongs, in the trash! I have been using all kinds wood stain with my business for years. This one is by far the worst to say the least! Destroyed the finish work on my customers product. Can said to let the stain penetrate for 2-3 minutes, but this literally dries in 10 seconds or less.... no I'm not kidding. There are now blotches and streakes all over. I have used several Behr wood stains and they have all been terrible! They need to stick with paint only.

Hi Kyle, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that the stain dried too quickly leaving streaks and blotches. That's not normal, and I can understand your disappointment. You can add an ounce of water to the quart to slow down the dry time if it is drying too fast. We appreciate you sharing your feedback. Please reach out to us directly if you need further assistance. This product finish is very nice, bought it specifically for a project I'm am working on and the finish is beautiful. It made the maple wood a rich dark color. Really worth it and it laid down very smoothly.

The bad reviews are USER ERROR. This stuff’s great
FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS. Used the pre stain conditioner, let that dry for 20 minutes. Applied the stain with a foam sponge brush, didn’t wipe off excess. Turned out really nice. These bad reviews are obviously not following the directions, buying the wrong color, or don’t understand how different types of wood change how the stain looks. Love how easy this stuff is to clean up, and almost NO smell. Used this indoors easily.

              Looks nothing like the tin
This stain ruined my baseboards! My flooring contractor found this golden oak color to match with existing baseboards in my living room. But once the installers applied the stain, it looked more like a low quality walnut stain. It's way too dark, and looks nothing like the photo on the tin. Now we have to remove the stain and delay the project. Don't buy Behr stains!

Hello Lang, thank you for your review. I'm very sorry to hear that your stain didn't turn out the way you expected. That is not the experience we want for our customers, and I can understand your frustration. Transparent stains are influenced by the original color and tone of the wood, which can impact the finished color. To fix the issue, I recommend removing the color by sanding or stripping. Make sure the baseboards are clean and dry before conditioning the bare wood with our Interior Water-Based Wood Conditioner. Once clean and dry, restain the surface. It may be best to use a new color, and you can test that on a small inconspicuous area beforehand. I want to assure you that your satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Worst stain I've ever used.
I make stuff for clients. And Home Depot stop selling the varathane premium stain. So I figured I'd give this a try, because it had the color I needed.... It does not go on evenly or consistently. It does not wipe well with rags. It is absolutely the worst stain I have ever used and now I have to stand and redo my whole project for my client. Not only am I out the cost of the product, but my time having to fix this mess. I do not know how this stain cleared for selling in stores.

Hi Thecrookedcarpenter, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear the Transparent Water-Based Interior Wood Stain did provide an even or uniform finish. This is not the level of performance expected from this stain and certainly not the experience we want for our customers. To fix this, I recommend removing the coating by sanding and ensuring the surface is clean and free of sanding dust. Condition the wood with Behr Interior Water Wood Conditioner B2080, and once dry, recoat with more stain. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Specifically for the White Wash Color
If you have a small project and your goal is to lighten the wood you're working with, I would recommend this product. I've been staining wood for years, usually only with oil-based stains, so I had really low expectations, but this stain surprised me. I had found old edge-banded plywood shelves in the attic of a house I bought so I thought I would try to reuse them. The stain dried really uniformly and changed the color to a beautiful beachy sun-bleached look. Worked out for me.

                      Do Not Trust Behr
Do not trust Behr. Their quality sucks. We bought 4 cans of Golden Oak but 1 of the cans is a completely different color as shown in the picture. We did one whole bedroom of one can and started in the second room for which we needed to start the second can. And the second can was a completely different color. We now have no idea what color we are applying to the rest of the floors to continue.

Does not match color on the can
The color on the can and in the guide are an ash brown type wood color with darker gray like lines. This is just a flat gray paint. Not even stain. Worst stain I’ve ever used and very expensive.

Our Fast-Drying Water-Based Wood Stain should provide a transparent finish, so that is not typical. To fix the finish and color, it's best to remove the coating by sanding or stripping the surface. Don't use on a large flat surface or anything
I used this on a solid birch door and it was impossible to apply with out getting overlap lines! I don't know if its because it was water based or because it was 30" wide and 7' tall, but it was a nightmare. Did not spread well or evenly. Staining the door frame (pine) was awful also. I had to brush it on and then rub like crazy to get it to spread and try and get it even. Worst stain I have ever used in 50 years!

Worst water based stain I’ve tried
The only positive thing about this stain is it doesn’t smell terrible. The color is so far off from dark walnut that it could be used as a grey stain. I’m not comparing to the swatch on the can, but the 4 other brands of dark walnut stain which have colors that are mostly interchangeable. This is NOT dark walnut. As for the formulation itself, poor color absorption and very flat, dull result. I did two coats on the board in the photo to get that result. I will not purchase again. Awful.

If you want a stain, get an oil-based one. If you want a wash, get some paint and mix in some water. This stuff is a waste of time and money unless you like stripping and sanding your project twice

Like paint; covers wood grain and makes splotches.
STAY AWAY. Extremely thick compared to your traditional stains. Could go as far to compare it to paint, except paint doesn't wash off with water..... Covered the wood grain even when applied very thinly. Dries matte and feels like I could scratch it off with my nail. Nothing like the picture on the label. They want you to buy the conditioner but I never had to use it before with other stains. A gimmick to get you to spend more apparently. Wiping excess doesn't help either.

I used a Minwax water based stain preconditioner, and got nice even results with this stain. It was easy to apply and control the darkness of the stain by the amount of time left on. I used it on cedar fencing, which I cut to match existing old oak tongue and groove flooring that was used in a piece of 19th century French furniture. It was a fairly close match, although I would have liked a little warmer tint, but this was the closest color available. It did give me the antique look I was going for.

I've used water based poly before but this was my first time using water based stain. It goes on a little different than oil based but once you get used to it you'll love it! You can really control the darkness with time as you need. And the cleanup is (of course) awesome! Highly Recommended.

I've included images which speak for themselves. Bear (Behr?) in mind the packaging says one coat coverage. This is a liberal coat. One piece of wood has been "stained". The other has not. I leave it to you to figure out which is which. The close up is of the stained wood. The can was shaken thoroughly. I've used white stain before, on knotty pine cabinets made for a farmhouse (an actual farmhouse) kitchen, and it gave a literal white wash look to the wood. This brand is a waste of money.

EASY to work with and NO ODOR!
I don't know what all the complaints are about; this water based stain worked great for our desired look and was EASY to apply (brushed on, ragged off excess)!! Granted, we didn't want a polished, stuffy classic look. We were going for primitive, rustic and barn-like in our 100 year old cabin. We wanted the new pine T&G we installed to look like it had been there the entire 100 years; maybe even look like it used to be a barn. And being winter, NO ODOR helped! We used Early American.

If you have a project that requires more than 5 seconds to wipe the stain off, don't use this. When they say fast drying, they mean really fast. So fast in fact, there literally isn't time to wipe it all off before it has dried at the end of the board you started on. Results in a splotchy mess ruining your project. I threw it out with great pleasure. Will never buy again. Stay away.

                                          Nice outcome
I stained a table and chairs. I was able to get reasonably similar finish on poplar and oak. I had to apply a few coats and allow time for saturation before wiping the stain to get hood results. I used a pre-stain wood conditioner. Love the water cleanup of these products as the brushes and rags came clean with water. We are good with the final results.

                                          WORST STAIN EVER
I wanted a quick-drying stain for my stairs so I chose this stain in Jacobean. Now I know to never ever buy a water stain.. stick with oil. Lesson learned. What was supposed to be a medium brown is super dark brown. With 2 coats it’s nearly black. We conditioned pine before painting and it looks absolutely terrible. Very splotchy even after sanding. This little quart of paint is going to cost me days of work to sand off and re-stain. Hopefully my mistake will save you time and money.

Hi Laig, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear about the splotchy finish and dark color. The Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner will help achieve uniform acceptance of the stain color. We recommend allowing the stain to penetrate for 5-10 minutes before wiping off. The more time the stain is allowed to penetrate, the richer and darker the color will be. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Had to learn how to apply this stain
I am accustomed to danish oils, so this was new to me. It took time to apply evenly, and several passes to get an even color. After drying, it looked much better than while wet. Beware "stainable wood filler", the color did not stay even after sanding the filler. This is most likely the fault of the filler on soft fir trim. In my photo you can see the spots in the corners of the trim. The spots are from Deft, that I left a separate review for, very disappointed in the spray nozzles from Deft.
