I love the idea of a fast-drying, water based stain. From that perspective, this product totally lived up to its name. My project was dry to the touch within an hour. And I used a generous amount of stain since the item was un-sanded and needed more stain than I anticipated. It covered well and made quick work of staining my project board. I still used gloves and a rag to apply, even though it was water based. It was easy to clean up and didn't have the terrible odor that accompanies oil based stain. I mixed the product well and applied per the instructions, but the color was much darker than I anticipated. I wiped off all the excess, but it was still darker than I thought it would be. Definitely a true espresso color, but darker than the swatch pictured. If you're looking for a product that's great to work with, this is the stain for you!

I'm going to be using this stain a LOT when going for that weathered and distressed look on projects! It's a beautiful color and really does dry quickly so you can finish a project faster. One coat can be enough, but it you're looking for a deeper color then you may want to go for a second coat. Either way, this is the perfect color to make your project look like it has been around for years.

I am really liking the Behr Brand Water Based Stains! This review is for the Dark Walnut color stain. I haven't used this on a project yet but I have test stained on Knotty Pine which is what I work with mostly. These stains have a heavier consistency as opposed to Varathane or Minwax brands, almost like paint but thinner however after i dipped my cotton wiping cloth and staining a piece of pine it looks great it was easy to apply and easy to get the desired color. These stains are really nice to work with. And Its a brand I already trust and use.

I need this to complete a king size bed that weights 800 lbs with 4 x 6 posts and 2 x side boards. This was a bed I made for a client that is getting married and wanted a bed that looked old but that was brand new. I mixed the poly together to get the correct color for the head board and the foot boards to make the would look aged. The bed took 4 weeks to build.

Great color stain, I like the heavy body this stain has, I’m still working on application ways to get the right tone I’m after. It’s easy to apply with a lint free cloth as well as a foam applicator. And the best thing I like is the lack of odor which is a plus when using In a living space. Clean up is easy as well since it’s water based. It’s the first water based stain I have used and I like it.

Very, very subtle pickling effect. Too subtle for my liking. I ordered it in the hope of getting a whitewash look on some Asian mahogany, but my 2-coat test on Philippine mahogany did not make the cut. I also tested it on some #2 white pine, including over a previously (oil-based) stained part, and on a scrap of grainy red oak. In my opinion, only the oak test turned out well, the lighter, less-interesting woods did not seem to be whitened much.

BEHR 1 qt. #TIS-504 Jacobean Transparent Water-Based Fast Drying Interior Wood Stain. The BEHR 1 qt. #TIS-504 Jacobean Transparent Water-Based Fast Drying Interior Wood Stain is another great product that is offered by BEHR. Once I unpackaged the product and opened the can, I carefully stirred the stain as per instructions and used a clean cotton cloth to stain in the closet pole I was intending to test the product on. As indicated in the description on Home Depot‘s website, this is a water-based fast dry and interior wood stain. Clean up was fast and simple and the product did dry quickly. I also noticed an absence of the strong odor that usually is present with oil base stains, an added plus! From the results of the stain alone, along with the bonus of easy cleanup, and reduced odor, I would recommend this stain and buy this product again.

A beautiful, high quality stain. I applied to a sanded pine veneer plywood with a rather light wood grain before finishing. (please see photos). I applied with a brush and then wiped with a cloth to get an even cover with no puddling. This water based stain brought out the natural wood grain nicely and only required one coat to achieve the desired color. It did however, show darker than the "color swatch" on the label. This is why Behr recommends testing on an inconspicuous area first. The satin finished wood had a nice red tinge added to the mahogany color. I will finish with Behr's High Gloss Polyurethane. I love the soap and water cleanup as well. 5 Stars for Quality, Appearance, Ease of Application and Cleanup.

I selected this product to use on a wood project I’m currently working on. Before using it on the actual project, I decided to try it out on a piece of scrap wood. I’m glad I did because the results were not what I was hoping for. Even after thoroughly stirring the product, it still has the look, feel and consistency of every day white school glue. After applying a coat to my scrap board, I saw very little change in the color of the wood. I allowed it to sit overnight to dry before applying a second coat. While it did increase the white coloring, it was so subtle that it would take numerous coats for me to achieve the look I was going for. While the photo shows the difference between the bare wood and after 2 coats, in person those changes are not that apparent. They are still very very subtle. The specifications say that it dries in one hour, which it did, and it did clean up easily with plain soap and water. However those are the only positive experiences I had with this particular product. For my purposes it’s not going to work.

Hi bb77,
Thanks for reviewing our Fast-Drying Wood Stain. I'm sorry to hear that the finish didn't turn out as expected. While the photo does give an idea of what the stain will look like, it is transparent and the wood underneath is going to affect the final look. For a better idea of what the stain would look like, i would suggest a sample. This way, you'll be able to test a small area while still seeing the final result of the stain. If you'd like, feel free to reach out directly to our Customer Care Department for any questions or assistance with your project. Have a good rest of your day, and thanks again for your feedback - Vince Behr

BEHR Early American Transparent Water-Based Fast Drying Interior Wood Stain. In this review I try four water based stains and poly and compare with an oil stain and poly. I have never before used water based polyurethane or water based stains. However, the benefits of water based products were sufficient to give them a try. For this review I tried Behr Satin Clear Water-Based Interior Fast Drying Polyurethane over bare wood and over four different Behr water based stains: Golden Oak, Golden Pecan, Early American, English Chestnut. For comparison, alongside I used an oil based polyurethane on bare wood and one oil based stain, Golden Oak. I applied to strips of poplar. Poplar is a closed grain wood that is notoriously hard to stain evenly Water based poly looks different. It is milky white, probably from the emulsifiers needed to mix poly and water. It dries crystal clear while the oil based poly dries a slightly warm amber. I used a foam brush for all poly applications and soft rag for all stain applications. The water based poly goes on a bit splotchy and often shows tiny bubbles. However, that was dealt with using some practice and careful brush strokes. It cannot be thinned or wiped on. Compared with oil the water based stains are very thick and syrupy and require a fair amount of working to get it even. It also doesn't seem to penetrate into the wood as readily as oil. However, when covered with poly that probably won't make a lot of difference. I compared "Golden Oak" oil based stain with Behr water based "Golden Oak." The water based was much more brown and the oil based much more yellow. The water base also seemed to be more even showing less of the wood's "character" which is not necessarily and bad thing. Perhaps because of the thickness of the stain. There are two good reasons to like these products. First, they very dry fast. In my shop at sixty-five degrees and low humidity everything was dry to the touch in less than thirty minutes. Oil based take as much as three to four hours. Second, the water based products can be cleaned up with soap and water. The oils take mineral spirits. There is also very little odor. Water based products cost more than oiled based. The bottom line for me is that water-based poly and stains are excellent products that provide good color and coverage and dry very fast. You can easily apply a stain and three coats of poly in a day. If speed is important these are the products you are looking for.

This EARLY AMERICAN TRANSPARENT WATER-BASED INTERIOR WOOD STAIN is very nice. It is easy to mix and keep mixed for usage. The stain goes on easy and wipes to a light brown color finish. This color is a little bit lighter than another brand I’ve used with the same stain name. As you can see by the picture, it is a beautiful light brown. I have some projects I plan on using this color for.

This is a GREAT water-based stain. I applied only 1 coat with a clean cloth on White Birch faced plywood with a light grain. By using a cloth, I was able to control and blend just enough stain to achieve the perfect color I was looking for without covering up the natural woodgrain. The stain dries in 1 hour allowing for additional coats if desired or a finish coat of polyurethane. I applied indoors with moderate ventilation and the odor was virtually undetectable. Soap and water cleanup. Another quality product by BEHR. 5 Stars

This is a combination of stain and polyurethane. To top it off it's water soluble. The stain can be put on using a brush or a rag. Using a rag may be a disadvantage because will have to probably do more than one coat. The has a satin finish and looks well on any type of wood. Some of the features are as follows: Abrasion Resistant,Chemical Resistant,Durable,Fast Drying,Low Odor,Moisture Resistant,Sealer,Stain & Poly in One,Stain Resistant,UV/Fade Resistant,Washable,Waterproof. Always follow the safety instructions on the can for the best results..

BEHR 1 qt. #TIS-512 Classic Gray Transparent Water-Based Fast Drying Interior Wood Stain A quality stain can add the finishing touch to a wood-working project. Trust that the name Behr brings that quality to wood stains. This is a water-based stain, which means reduced odors and easier clean up with soap and water. This Behr stain goes on smoothly and dries quickly- usually in an hour. It can be tinted to meet your color needs, or you can select one of the premade colors.

Easy and even. I have now used this line of stains several times and been consistently pleased with the outcome. They produce a controllable, even finish that dries quickly, but offers an extended rework time. It was not without concern that I decided to try a stain that I had not used before. Because of the low odor and reliable finish offered by this line, I now plan to fully replace my previous “old standby” brand. Many of us I am sure lock ourselves into employing products that we have used previously and fail to ever look any further. I am guilty of this to a fault. Nonetheless, I decided to keep an open mind and break with my own tradition. Behr has long been my go to manufacturer for paints and exterior stains, so I was pleased to discover that they produce an interior, water base stain as well. These products are truly a welcome addition to the shop and I welcome my new source for fine furniture finishes.

Darker than expected. But nice coloring of the wood. If you are like me, you probably have a shelf full of different stains because every project needs a slightly different hue or charm. And the different types of wood will color differently. I find most stains do well with pine, but others will look different than samples and product images. This is indeed the case here. I apply my stains using a dust free rag. Having a water based stain means I can wash my rags and use them again. Happy me! Goes on easy, its thicker than I expected but that doesn't make it hard to use. I did end up having some streaks show up when using on alder, but that was likely my fault. As for the color - see the pictures. I found the Alder got really dark and had a faint red hue. The pine application was brown and highlights the grains of the wood very well.

Amazingly fast drying wood stain. I used this state of the art stain on an oak rail that was lighter than I wanted. The staining process was a breeze. The stain was very easy to apply and dried to the touch within 10-15 minutes. I was very impressed with the application process. I've used stain in the past and didn't have as much luck with the stain absorbing into the wood. This stain was very easy to apply. The fast drying really made a difference in my project time. I was able to stain both sides with two coats in under an hour. I highly recommend this stain for any indoor application.

Great value at a reasonable cost. Initially I had planned to simply build a closet system. I decided instead to give ClosetMaid a try. These shelves are made of quality materials and are a snap to assemble. In my application, I needed some additional storage for sweaters, sweatshirts, T-shirts and such. While the vendor offers a wide range of configurations, this one fits my needs perfectly. It readily fit just under the existent hanger bar and the cabinet is more than sturdy enough for my needs. (Or most others) To further reduce the space used, I chose to end mount it, rather than reduce the usable closet bar more than need be. Having now seen the end product, I now plan to install another in a second bedroom. Truly a great product for anyone who craves more storage.

Did a test board to see how this would come out with and without polyurethane. Used a leftover piece of oak veneer plywood and applied only one coat of the stain and allowed about 15 minutes of waiting time before wiping off the surface. Longer waiting time or a second coat would have made it darker of course. Since I was applying to hardwood oak as opposed to soft pine, no pretreatment was done. I waited about an hour and a half (cool day) before applying the oil based polyurethane. You can see that the poly made the stain look slightly darker but not dramatically so. This is only one coat of poly so additional coats may darken the finish slightly more. Easy to work with stain and much better results than I experienced many yrs ago when water based stain first came out.

BEHR White Wash Pickling Transparent Water-Based Fast Drying Interior Wood Stain We had two projects we wanted to white wash pickle so this-user friendly water based BEHR product seemed like a potential solution. First was an old Florida-weathered outdoor cedar bench that was in the process of turning black and we wanted to reverse that. So (see 1st photo attached) I experimented on one rung. As you see, it picked up just enough of the white color on the first coat due to the very porous nature of the surface. The second application was on some tongue and groove cypress planks that have been stored in my shed for near 30 years so I assume they are as seasoned dry as they will ever be. The BEHR product’s first coat applied was not very evident however, so a few hours later I added a second and this turned out to meet our expectations. The second photo shows the original unfinished surface on the left, and to the right, is the second coat result. Reading the can label, they recommend their Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner. So we are going to get that and apply it before going forward as I think it will not only give us more uniform coverage, but probably stretch the product by not having to apply a second coat.

I applied the stain (one coat) to a test board (3/4 plywood pine) with a foam brush. I tested half with the traditional method of applying the stain and then wiping with a rag, and the other half I brushed on and let it dry (per instructions). I expected the side not wiped to have more of a sheen, but there wasn't a difference in the two sides after they dried besides the unwiped side having better coverage with a considerably darker coating, but if you are worried about brush strokes, you can still use the wipe method and apply extra coats if you want a darker look. I didn't see any visible brush marks on mine regardless. Either way, the stain applied evenly and dried quickly (overnight). The result was very nice and the final color may vary with the type of wood used.

Having grown up with a do-it-yourself father, old habits are hard to break. I have always used another brand of stain but thought, why not try something new? I use Behr paint so decided to try the Behr stains as well. I am very pleased with the results. This stain went on easily, covered well, dried quickly and was a very good match to the color as promised. Clean up was a breeze as well!

This stain was easy to mix and easy to work with. The stain color was just what we expected. My first photo shows the wood with stain just applied, the 2nd photo shows it after it has dried on the wood. The looks are extremely similar, this tells me that the stain applies nicely and evenly and that it dries the same color. The left stain area is down with a brush. The right stain area is done with a clothe. Both apply in 1 coat evenly and similar to each other. The stain applies with a brush does not blotch like the lower quality stains do, this is a high quality stain. The color is just what I expected, the 3rd picture show the can open, the stain color looks dark in the can, but as you can see on the first 2 pictures, the stain applies nicely, evenly and to the color expected. We have many areas in the house that need touchups and I think we have found the stain that will do this well for up. My brush cleaned up with water very easily. Strongly recommend this stain.

The one quart size is a good amount for a small job. This quality product enhances the natural grain leaving its natural beauty. It applies easily and the VOC is noticeably lower than similar oil based products. Its quick dry time is a real plus, especially since two coats are probably needed. I still prefer oil based stains for projects that need a more durable finish.

Used the product to finish a Lego Box for a child of my office manager. We could not decide on a stain until this came. It was just the right color to make the office manager say that that's the one she wanted. Her child was jumping up and down when we brought it over to their house. He has played with it almost every day since we delivered it, Thank you for the product.
