Whitewash Stain is the new black
The whitewash effect gave me the look I was going for in staining the wood but allowing the natural grain to show through.

Turned out nicely
We like the color and application was easy for us first time stainers. Used this for some closet shelves. It wasn’t quite as close of a match to our doors as we thought it’d be, but will look nice anyway. Remember Poplar has a green tint so balance it.

    Love working with this stain!
Water based stain it's hard to apply in general but if you know how to do it, the effect will be generous! We stained our bedroom set and coffee table with gray, and frond door with esspreso. All of the pieces turned out awesome! The next project - stairs in esspreso color and seriously I can't wait to do it!

This product removed previous pickling and left walls blotchy and less white than they had been
I applied this water-based white pickling stain to an old wall that I pickled years ago with an oil-based pickling stain. I was worried it might create too dense a white finish, since the wall was somewhat white to begin with, but I needn't have worried. It appears to have removed some of the previous pickling, but left behind so little whiteness that I know have a blotchy surface that looks more wood-colored than the previous white pickled wall. I mixed the stain throughly, applied it with a brush, and let it sit for about five minutes, per instructions, then wiped off the excess. I could give it a second go, but I think my technique was okay and the product just may be too thin. The wall has no polyurethane or varnish on it and should have been able to absorb the stain. The only good thing this situation is that, because the wall is now barer than it was before, I can still try a different product. (Photo attached to show how I seem to have gone backwards rather than forwards in whiteness.) I will still have to deal with the uneven result of this one. If other products prove similar, then I will know that I am at fault, but I don't think that will happen.

Hi Isleofnewyork - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that it looks like the old stain color was removed after applying our interior stain on top! To fix the finish, I recommend removing the current stain from your wall so you're back down to bare wood (our interior stain is recommended on bare surfaces only), sanding the wood in the direction of the grain using fine-grit sandpaper (#150) until the surface is smooth, then pretreating the area with our Water-Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner before reapplying the stain. Please feel free to reach out to us directly so we can assist you with this further. We hope to hear from you! - Sara Behr

A terrible product I DO NOT recommend that anyone use it.
This is a very very terrible product. I have use Minwax and Varathan oil based products from Home Depot for years and have never had this type of problem. The project is a workbench that I am fortunately building for myself and not a customer. If I were building this for a customer I would have to trash it and start over losing $1500.00 in material and labor. The wood is red oak with the wood conditioner applied per the instructions and sanded with 220 grit sandpaper per instructions. I applied the stain with a foam brush and wiped off the excess stain per the instructions. The layers of stain did not blend together as normal with oil based stains. Also the stain does not have a uniform color to it. Wood is an organic product so there will be some variations within the project, but not to this extent. I have been building furniture for over 15 years and have never experienced anything like this. It would be nice if Home Depot or Behr would compensate me for the loss.

Golden Oak isn't golden at all
There is no hint of a golden hue to the Golden Oak color, at least not on the pine trim to which I applied a coat (see photo). It is much more a straight brown. I'm used to depictions of colors being inaccurate and I know that the stain can look different depending on the wood, but this one wasn't even close in my opinion. Glad I tested it, sad that I'll just be disposing of it.

Used on Hatchbox Wood-fill PLA 3D printing filament
Not knowing if this would work at all, I sanded the crap out of some 3D printed parts I made with Hatchbox wood-fill PLA filament using 60 grit sandpaper and brushed it on with a cheap 1" wide sponge brush I got at an art store. It worked *really* well. Made what originally looked like just tan plastic look like old weathered wood. I did put two coats on most of the pieces because they looked a little too light after they dried. I hit it with a very light coat of gloss spray paint to seal it after it dried, but I don't think it really needed it. The 3D model I used is from the "Thingiverse" website and is item number 4652955 (I don't know if links are allowed in reviews so I'm not putting the direct link). Note: I'm on the Home Depot page for the "Jacobean" color, but as I'm leaving this review it's listing the Walnut color in the title. What I used is Jacobean B4504.

At first I bought the small can because I want to check the colour. I tried it in different kind of woods because I have lot of projects at home, and I do not want any reddish or yellow tones anymore. In the photo you see bamboo, pine, two oaks and maple. Obviously, the final color is different when the base is different, but it is very nice. Warm brown walnut color, not very dark. My first project was this bamboo vanity. I applied two coats. It was natural bamboo color, but now is special walnut, and I like it. I have ordered the biggest can for other projects I have at home, but I think this product should be on the shelves of all Home Depots, after all is Behr. Why do we have to order it online?

              Different color
Hey, Behr, why don’t you put an ACTUAL picture of how your wood stain on wood. It’s not that difficult. Look, I did it for you. This is how you “Special walnut” looks in real life. Pretty red, don’t you think? Now I have a whole can of your wood stain that I can’t return or use. Great strategy of selling more products. So disappointing. The only good thing about this product is that it’s water based and was available at my local store.

Hi UnsatisfiedCustomer - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that this stain color didn't turn out as expected. The color should match up to the stain color on the label once the product has been stirred for a few minutes before use. While the color of the bare wood will affect the overall stain color, I'm concerned that the finish in your picture has a red tone. To fix, I recommend removing the stain, conditioning the bare wood with our Interior Water-Based Wood Conditioner, then reapplying the stain with a new can. We'd like to assist you with this further. Please don't hesitate to reach out to our Customer Care team directly. We hope to hear from you. - Sara Behr

I tried out this water based stain in the interest of finding a more eco-friendly option compared to the oil-based stains I've used in the past. In short, I can say there is a very steep learning curve here and I still haven't figured out how to get the results I'm looking for. The stain ended up having a very grainy and blotchy appearance on the wood as it seemed to absorb much less consistently than oil-based products I've used. It was bad enough that there's no way I'd want to move on to applying a finish coat over it. Perhaps sanding more, limiting myself to tighter grained woods, using a pretreatment, or something else is missing but the end results were very artificial looking (as you can see in many of the pictures from other reviews as well.) On the positive side, a little finish went a long way so the coverage was pretty good. And the odor wasn't that of harsh solvents you typically get from oil-based finishes. That said, I really didn't like the smell. It's something between spoiled milk and earthiness that was fairly off-putting. Perhaps you'd get used to that but I certainly was happy to put the lid back on the can and throw away the rag.

Hi Slobrewer - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that the finish looks grainy and blotchy! To ensure a uniform finish, we recommend sanding the surface in the direction of the grain using fine-grit sandpaper (#150) until smooth before pretreating the wood with our Water-Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner. To fix the finish, I recommend applying a second coat in the direction of the grain with a brush or clean cloth, allowing the stain to penetrate 5-10 minutes, then wiping the excess off with a clean cloth (please keep in mind that this will darken the color). For further assistance with your project, please feel free to reach out to us directly. We'd be happy to help! - Sara Behr

I have used a couple of these Behr stains and so far the color has been a little different than the stock photo. This one turned out to be nicer than I thought it would be based on that. It was easy to apply and easy to clean up as well. I like the darker color that it turned out to be. Although you have to be careful on the exposed ends it tends to soak in more there and get a little darker. All in all I was happy with the outcome of it.

So far I like the looks of the product. Although the actual stain looks a little different from the stock photo, it still looks good and it is a nice gray color. It is easy to apply and being water based it is easy to clean up as well. The first coat looks good, but looks like it may need a second coat to completely cover it. All in all a nice easy stain to use.

This Behr indoor wood stain is rich in color without being sticky or tacky like some stains. It's a very thin product compared to others. The smell is also less harsh than other brands. I like the shiny finish and the quick dry. My bedroom floors were damaged with 100 years of wear and tear. The stain brought them back to life with minimal sanding.

I acquired the Behr Golden Oak water based fast drying stain to stain some replacement oak flooring boards. The material is very easy to work with, however the golden oak stain stains the boards considerably darker than one would expect from the description and from online visual samples. I would recommend this stain if you want a deeper brown oak stain. The stain is easy to work with and brushes and pads clean up nicely with soap and water. It is easily removed from your hands with soap and water if you grab a wet can without gloves.

                  Behr wood stain is awesome
I’ve used Behr Marquee paints for years painting rooms in our house. When it came time to refinish our dining room table, I discovered Behr’s new interior wood stains. After stripping, sanding and thoroughly washing, I applied Behr Pre-stain according to directions followed by the Golden Oak stain and finished off with the polyurethane. I used Behr’s Chalk Paint for the bottom along with a clear wax. Very impressed with the outcome. Amazing results if you take your time and do it right. Highly recommend Behr’s line!

I love behr stains. Easy to use/apply. Easy to make the stain even, and holds up very well, especially if sealed properly. And they dont yellow, where as other brands ive come across will yellow if you use polyurethane seal. Its hard to try and show pictures of these stains as there are so many different variants. How many coats, how long you let each coat sit, what kind of wood, what kind of seal, etc. i would say it does great for what color you are going for. And would recommend to any carpenter or even DIY.

Product is a very good product but it was too dark for the type of wood I’m using it on which is curly maple. I would use it on a different type of wood like walnut pine some that don’t have some nice decorative design to The wood. I will be using it more on different types of wood that I work with because I do like the product it is a very good quality. Clear high gloss finish would not be my choice because it is a satin finish not a high-gloss finish like I’m used to using. In my photo you will see the different types of finishes that I use for high gloss the high gloss that I got on the seeds program I do not classify as high gloss It is more of a satin finish. the first can you see in the picture is a very high gloss and that’s what I was hoping for from the Other ones that I needed But the other two did not fill my need’s that I was looking for they’re still good product so if you’re looking for a satin finish those are the ones to buy because they’re better than the other satin finish is that I have tried

I do a lot of wood working and have used many different types and colors of stain. To include other name brands of Golden Pecan/Natural Oak. This product was outstanding. The can opens and seals again for easy storage. The quality is great. I used this product on a project that was going in my own home. I took and old coffee table and refurbished it. Going with a natural wood look, I used oak and this product made the natural grain pop. Not to dark and brought the real wood grain into great contrast. I was very pleased with the final result and now my coffee table is the center piece of the room This product applies easily and clean up is a breeze. Not many stains impress me like this one did.

The Behr Red Mahogany B4508 stain is a really great stain. This stain is a water based stain and has a quick drying time (about an hour), goes on nice and easy, and no super noticeable smell. I actually applied this stain in my bedroom, and really didn't even notice an odor (mask for safety and apply in a well ventilated area, you know just in case). Prep your surface, apply the stain, let dry and then add your clear coat, and clean up with soap and water. The directions for this suggest you do two coats to be complete, however based on my experience, the second coat seemed a bit darker than I would have liked, so if you like to see a little more grain, give the one coat look a try first, and see how you feel about it.

Great quality stain. Has very good coverage and color. Dries super fast for multiple coats. I use these stains for projects I do refinishing furniture around my house. I have tried several of the Behr stains now and they are excellent. They cover well and have very deep rich color to them. Clean up is easy. You can do one coat or several, depending on the depth of color that you want. After many years using other name brand stains after using these I think these will be my new go to stain.

Really great color! I made a small sample patch of this on a piece of select pine to test it for an upcoming project. The color looked great! It gave the pine a very contemporary look that you can't get with many stain colors. It almost has a washed appearance, but i think you could make it more uniform if you wanted to. It was super easy to apply and wipe off with an old t-shirt. I'm excited to use this on my next project!

Really great color! I made a small sample patch of this on a piece of select pine to test it for an upcoming project. The color looked great! It gave the pine more warmth, but without going towards a red or honey color that a lot of other stains do. This just gave the original wood tone some extra color and depth. This was a great product. I wanted to refinish a towel rack in this early american color and it came out beautiful. I lightly sanded & cleaned but kept a portion of the old color since this product is transparent. It mixed well and easily enough. It brushed on very smoothly & the transparent quality give a very distinctive look to the finished product. It dries fairly fast fast & also cleans up with water & soap. You do have to add a clean finish application since this is only a stain color & not a combination stain & finish.

This is water based non-oil based stain. It cleans up with water, no thinner etc needed. Stain applies just like any other stain, can be reworked up to 48 hours after application, unlike oil based ones. No noticeable odor unlike oil based, safer to use, non-flammable too. Applies just like oil based stain, looks the same when applied. Transparent stain lets more of the base wood show through then pigment stain, easier to see wood grain. The can has a rubber/plastic bottom to prevent rusting etc. Can is metal with metal lid. I have used this type of stain for years and swear by it. Shade is dark reddish brown, not a light stain

This is a great product if you just want to give your wood a light coat of wash. It is easy to use and the low fumes is great for an indoor project.Great shabby chic look.Great for barn wood, ship lap or even all those new pallet wood projects. Really shows the true grain of the wood. This White Wash would also be great for showing off birch or other light wood. Finish looks nice.

Finally!! Behr brings a WATER BASED stain that is easy to use on many levels! Easy for application. Easy and fast drying. Easy to clean up afterwards! This Dark Walnut color is perfect for the quick touch up jobs that I have on the well used kitchen cabinets. Apply additional coats to darken the color as absorption is determined by the type of wood that you are applying it to. The application was very easy and the dry time, around a half an hour or so, made my job super easy! With over 12 available colors to choose from I'm not exactly sure why you would want to use any other kind of stains.
