Still Tacky after 48 hours and HORRIBLE leveling
I do not understand--I do not understand! I primed, and waited over 10 hours between coats. The finish is HORRIBLE. I used a high density foam roller specifically for cabinets and it is just downright awful. Highly textured on everything. You really can't paint too heavily with a foam roller--so the coats were very thin. I have new cabinets, never painted before. I used KILZ oil-based primer and the finish is still tacky after 48 hours. I tried to sand it down with an orbital sander and it's leaving paint in globs on the sandpaper. I have always used Behr paint, but this is just awful!!! Awful!!!

Hi Adriane - I'm sorry to hear about the tacky and textured finish on your cabinets! To ensure a smooth finish, we recommend applying this product with a high-quality synthetic brush, 1/4"-3/8" nap roller or an airless sprayer with a .013"-.017" spray tip. This paint should also feel dry to the touch after 2 hours of dry time, and will come to a full cure after 7 days. To fix the finish, we recommend allowing additional dry time before sanding the unwanted texture off the surface, wiping the area down to remove the sanding dust, then applying a new coat. You may also want to set up fans and open windows/doors to increase the air flow around your cabinets to help speed up the drying process. For further assistance with this, please feel free to reach out to us directly. We' be happy to help. - Sara Behr

Gorgeous color but leaves roller marks easily and is absolutely not one coat any longer. I have used Behr only for 30 years, this low odor paint is terrible. 3 colors, 3 areas painted and never just one coat even though we covered light colors.

    Hi Nikovon,

Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry to hear about the roller marks and that you needed to apply more than 1 coat for full coverage. Our Alkyd Satin Enamel will typically cover in 1-2 coats, however additional coats may be required for more dramatic color changes or porous surfaces. To fix the finish, I recommend applying another coat, making sure to follow the recommended spread rate to achieve the correct coverage. For further assistance with this, please feel free to reach out to us directly. We'd be happy to help - Sara Behr

Absolutely love the color but the low odor paint Behr uses also makes in no longer a one coat paint! Third color I’ve bought with same issue going over light colors. I’m afraid I’m going to look for a new paint supplier!

So easy to apply, great coverage and great results!
I was surprises how little of this was needed to redo my bathroom vanity cabinets. The results were fantastic. For some reason the instructions say to use a 1/4 nap rolled so i did, but in retrospect i think i should have used a foam roller. The first two coasts had roller marks, but with each successive coat the Marks went way and by the third coat you can’t see them at all.

in the long run... its woth every penny and cure time
For those people who have painted shelves doors or cabinets and found out that years later what you put on the shelves is still sticking your door is sticking your cabinets are sticking. This is the paint that prevents that. It has a longer cure time because it acts as an oil based paint but cleans up like a water-based paint and there are no toxic fumes. Because of the way it is constructed it is ideal for doors trim shelves and also metal. Water-based paints cause metal to rust. If you can scratch this off with your finger nail then you either applied it to stick to begin with or you didn’t prepare the service correctly. All we did for my daughters kitchen cabinets is wipe them down with liquid sander.

I used a high quality brush and the strokes still show. It also required more than one coat to cover the areas I painted. The scent was relatively low, and otherwise got the job done but I don't know what I'd use it for again.

I used this paint with an air sprayer at it worked very well! I was looking for a hard paint for a dresser I made for a baby changing table. First I applied Kilz 3 primer, sanded down with 320 grit, and then applied 3 coats of this paint while sanding in between coats. The paint dries flat and I couldn't be happier. The finish is as smooth as something I would have bought from a store! The can does say "DO NOT THIN", but I noticed that it was still too thick for my sprayer so I diluted down about 5-8% with water and this covered well without clogging or clumping.

This paint wash one of two that was recommended by two of the HD paint associates that I spoke with to use in painting my kitchen cabinets. I found it easy to apply with a quality foam roller. It leveled out very nicely and was easy to clean up. Two coats was plenty good enough to cover my oak brown cabinets that I lightly sanded before painting. No primer was needed as for most applications it's not needed with this paint. The only time you might need to prime would be to cover heavy stains or perhaps bare wood to prevent grain raising, since this is a water based paint. A very good paint that's easy to apply and clean up which should hold up better than a non-urethane paint. I saw a few complaints from reviewers that the paint was peeling off after application and I'm thinking that this may have been due to improper surface preparation or that they didn't let it dry thoroughly before they tested its adhesion. After painting you should let it dry at least 24 hours before handling it and many weeks if not months before testing it's adhesion, since it takes that long to fully cure. This is not a lacquer type paint that will harden over night. The finish I got using a good quality foam roller was equivalent to using a cheaper type spray gun. It was good, but not as good as it could be if I had used a good quality airless sprayer, which is what you would need to use with this paint.

This paint has been excellent for cabinets and trim. The only thing that you need to be aware of is that because the base is so unique most home depots won't have the right color mixtures to change the color. But the color looks great still.

It's an oil base paint that works best in areas in the home that see a lot of activity, such as the kitchen. I bought a new kitchen Island and I wanted to camouflage the brown tabletop under my countertop. This Behr paint worked great under a dining area. This paint "hid" the brown color and made it fit in perfectly with the white trim on the island.

I purchased Behr Alkyd satin enamel paint in Dec 2017 to give our old kitchen cabinets a update! We selected SW 7019 Gauntlet Gray color tint on a deep base and I'm so happy I did. This was a DIY project and it was my first time using this type of paint on any cabinets, they turned out fantastic and will be using this paint for all our home trim and doors! I must say that there is a learning curve in using this paint, first you want to AVOID over brushing areas when painting. Best result is to just start with a light first coat of the paint, drying between coats (I recommend a few hrs) then do second coat. It settles nicely on old wood cabinet defects from age and looks natural on cabinets doors without too many brush strokes (but you must not over brush on the paint). I was only a little disappointed by the drying time even after the 2nd coat, it does take several days to dry fully but it dries hard! Don't worry if you see minor color changes on any water spots that gets on them while paint is still drying...because it will immediately go back to actual color once fully dried. That's the only down part of this project, since it was our kitchen which we use daily the drying took way longer than I expected (2 weeks or more to fully dry but luckily it was not sticky after a few hrs). I'm not a professional at painting but have painted home DIY projects many times and I'm the most proud of how this small kitchen update turned out using this paint! So try it and it won't disappoint. Also, unsure if they changed the name of the paint gallon I purchased in 2017, as I only see it called Urethane Alkyd satin enamel paint now. I believe it's the same paint, when I spoke with a home depot paint guy recently while looking to get it for my next DIY project our doors and door trims!

I bought this to repaint some old furniture. I've previously used regular latex paint for doing kitchen cabinets and the results were fine. The person at the paint counter recommended this when I told her I was doing furniture, so I decided to give it a shot. I had planned to use this in my Homemax sprayer. However, the paint is too thick for the sprayer to work effectively, and there is no way to thin this paint (at least the manufacturer recommends against any type of thinning). Second problem is that the finish seems very soft. Three weeks later, and I can press my fingernail into it and create an indentation. I dragged a small plastic item across it and it left a nice scratch. I went back and bought the Behr Premium+ Ultra and did the second piece using that. Much better results.

Hi BlindMan, thank you for your feedback. Sorry to hear your was too thick to say in conjunction with your sprayer, and that the coating seems to be drying too slow; that's not the experience we want our customers to have with our products. Our Urethane Alkyd Paint can be applied using an airless sprayer with a 60 mesh filter and a .013-.017 tip. And, it can take up to 7 days or more to fully cure and bond to your surface. Keep in mind that darker colors may take longer to fully cure, and that temperature can also affect the curring process. So, we would suggest increasing the ventilation in the area with the furniture is located. If the coating begins to peel or lift, or does not harden after 30 days, it may be necessary to remove it and reapply it to your surface. Customer satisfaction is important to us. So, don't hesitate to contact us directly if you need assistance. We're always happy to help. Have wonderful day! –Joanna Behr
              Excellent for Furniture Painting
The employee at my local Home Depot recommended this as he said he uses it to paint cabinets. I was just working on a simple project of some wood side tables and an mdf organizer and they all came out incredible. I combined a gallon with about four ounces of Flotrol and used a brush for the tables and a roller on the organizers. They both look perfect, I definitely recommend this product!

Bought this on recommendation from Home Depot staff to paint cabinets. Was told to spray it which did not work out well as it is very thick. Upon relaying this on to another staffer afterwards they said that spraying was not a good application. If you use it roll it. I found it to be too long to dry and hard to work with. Wish I had used regular paint.

We ordered this paint April 2019 after coming highly recommended by local HD. Specifically, it is Behr In/Ext Alkyd Satin Enamel Deep Base 7930. We have brand new mahogany cabinet doors, primed and sanded. We painted over the course of the next 4 weeks. We used two coats of this paint ( had to ). We took it back once to have it shaken to hopefully keep it well mixed, etc. I am not a beginner painter, and have painted cabinets before. We have had multiple issues. It did not level well, it took over 2 weeks just to get close to dry, there are sections STILL not cured even after 6 weeks or more. There are areas that easily chip off, about the size of a mechanical pencil eraser head. This is by far the worst paint I've ever used, I am not exagerating. Our area is humid ( middle TN ), but we run the air conditioner at about 74 F to keep humidity down. I am just floored at how poorly this paint job went. I will NEVER again use this product. Instead I would go back to something not 'new' and just use Behr Paint and Primer. I would not consider the Marquee because it's new as well and frankly can't roll the dice again. I would LOVE for Behr / HD to reach out to me about this issue. I would not even use this on a small project, it's just not worth it. I can't stress enough not to use this latest greatest strength of oil / cleanup of water paint. I wrote this review hoping others will not make the same mistake I did.

                  Hi Crab,

Thank you for your review, and I am sorry to hear you encountered so many issues when using the paint. I can assure you this isn't the experience we want any of our customers to go through. However, to fix, we'd recommend using soap and water to remove any tackiness residue since the coating has had more than enough time to dry. Afterward, I'd suggest sanding off any of the loose coating, and cleaning off any residue. When done, feel free to apply the paint you'd like to use now. We would love to reach out to you directly to help with this, but we don't have any of your info. However, I'd urge you to reach out to us directly; we can then look into turning this experience around for you. -Edith Behr

I asked the paint department at Home Depot what would be the best paint to use for cabinetry that I built for a theater room. They highly recomended the Alkyd paint because of the hard durable, washable finish and its excellent leveling ability and ease of use. I choose the satin finish because it is in a theater room and I did not want it to reflect light back from the screen. I choose a dark charcoal grey color. The paint went on very smooth and at first I was impressed but after moving on a few feet I started noticing all the paint forming drip marks. I am an experienced painter and did not apply too much product so this was very strange. I fixed the issue by going over the area to smooth the finish before the paint drips dried. I waited 24 hours to apply the second coat. The paint was still tacky and would mark or chip just by touching it. I assumed it was a bad batch so i went and purchased a new can for the second coat. I let the first coat dry for a week before I applied the second coat with the new can. I applied the second coat and the appearance was very nice. After 24 hours the paint was still very tacky and i could not wire the cabinets so i needed to wait. I waited one week and then tried again. The paint was still slightly sticky to the touch but much better than a week ago. The moment I touched the paint in any way it scratched and was not repairable. Using the back of my fingernail, not the edge, I gently brushed it over the paint and it created white marking that could not be removed. Even soft pieces of felt scratched the surface. I took videos of the surface and how it scratched so easily and showed the paint department at Home Depot. They had no explanation and replaced the paint with a Kilz oil primer to go over the previous Alkyd satin paint and new cans of their standard latex paint. The had recommended not using latex originally because they said it can cause the doors to stick when going from closed to open. They had no other idea what to do. I am so angry because of the time wasted on this project. I painted two coats with a week in between trying to let each coat dry and now including the primer I have three more coats to paint to try to fix the cabinets which cant even be touched without marking them. On top of that the Home Depot paint team didn't correctly match the color in the next latex paint so it is now darker than what I wanted as I tried a test patch but I can't go back there and spend more time trying to resolve the color issue so I am just dealing with it. Behr should repaint these cabinets for me for all the time that I have wasted using this paint and for how far I am behind now on this project. Do not use, I used two different cans with the same bad results so it seems logical it is just a really bad product.

Hi nickname1, thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear you ran into so many issues with your Alkyd paint; that's not the experience we want our customers to have with our products. To ensure proper paint consistency during your application, we recommend stirring your paint for 3-5 minutes before using it, making sure to remove the excess off your application tool. Our Alkyd paint takes about 7 days to fully cure. However, darker colors do take longer to dry. During the curing time, scuffing or chalking can occur on your painted surface, as the coating has not dried out completely. To remove the white marks and fix the scratched areas, we'd recommend allowing your paint to dry for at least a week before lighting cleaning it with mild soap and water, allowing it to dry, and touching up. Customer satisfaction is important to us. So, please feel free to contact us directly if you need further assistance. Our Customer Care team will be happy to help! Have a wonderful day! –Joanna Behr

Not recommended. I had to put on 3 to 4 coats to get a somewhat smooth finish. Not being happy with the results I was getting, I experimented. I tried applying with a nap roller, brush and foam roller. In the end, light sanding between coats and 3 to 4 coats got me to something I could live with. Now after all that work, I wait to see if it holds up with use.

Definitely two coats to get an excellent result. Fast drying time. Water clean up. A little pricey but worth it. Durability remains to be seen, but I suspect it will be good.
