Not sure how to rate this! The one I bought a few years ago and just finished up a couple days ago was wonderful even after storing a couple gallons in the garage for four years it still went on nice and it looks great! Then I opened up the 5 gallon one that we just bought the end of August 2020! Totally defective so we had to call and get it picked up! It was so thick it was like clay with a little bit of liquid on top! We tried to mix in the liquid and there was just no way we were going to be able to paint with it! So that one would have to give zero stars or one. But I know that’s not how your paint usually is! I got the same kind but not textured in Colorado and I bought a 5 gallon container two different times and I just love the paint! It’s just that one container was totally defective & not useable! But out of the other three 5 gallon containers I have used I have to give a five star review! But they just picked up the defective one today and they’re saying a new one will come tomorrow! Praying that that will not be defective! I really don’t think it will be! Great paint, normally!

Warning - Must Read this Review before Buying!!!
What a waste! Waste of money, mostly a waste of time. I hate leaving bad reviews, but I would rather the next guy know how bad this product holds up. Behr Deck Over is not worth the effort you just put into sanding your deck. Stay away!!! I must say I am beyond disappointed in this product, and I will not be recommending this to anyone I know. I applied it and within 2 days the product peeled away. 2 days! I must say I bought this product before reading the reviews I found here at: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/behr-deckover-review-2015/ *Behr please don't bother responding, I've read your other responses. No way a product should peel in 2 days! What a disaster. I have to to do the job all over again. I would recommend Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior. More money, but who wants to do the job twice. Think about that before you buy Behr Deck Over.

This is some really good stuff. Took me a while to do my deck, starting with top trim, handrails, spindles, steps, before getting to main deck. Only did one coat so far, with a brush. The difference is really amazing - see the before and after. It's fairly thick stuff but went surprisingly a long way. I bought two 5-gallon containers (about $145 each) in "Cappuccino" color which we love. I think I could have gotten away with just one container but thinking I'll do the second coat with a roller so I may tap into the other container at some point. I only did one quick cleaning of the deck, no stripping or anything because the wood was already so worn. Didn't do any sanding either. Anyway, can finally relax.

      NOT cedar
This product is absolutely not a cedar color. We bought it to go on our front porch deck but theres no way. The picture is our side porch. Its so orange.

        Peeled after one year
Highly recommended by Home Depot salesman, I did all the recommended pretreatment and then applied two coats. Looked great for the first summer but began to peel during first winter. Now, 3 years later, is still peeling. Not recommended!

Hello Sam, thank you for sharing your feedback. We're sorry to hear our DeckOver coating peeled so quickly after your application, and has continued to peel; this is not the performance we expect from our products. To get your project back on track, we'd recommend removing all the peeled and loose coating from your surface before cleaning your wood with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner, allowing it to dry for at least 24 hours, touching up the affected areas, and doing an overall recoat of your surface to uniform your finish and reseal the wood. If more than half of the coating has lifted, we'd recommend applying two full coat of our Advanced DeckOver to it when recoating to ensure the surface is properly sealed. Customer satisfaction is important to us. Please feel free to contact our Customer Care team directly with any questions you may have or for further assistance. Have a great rest of your Thursday. –Joanna Behr

This stuff is THICK, and requires two additional trips to get more because one gallon covers about half what you think it would, but great product for covering old cracked wood.

          Is this the correct color?
Not sure if this was mixed incorrectly or if it dries darker. It's salmon color and I hate it. If i supply the mixing code, can you tell me if it's the correct mixture? I'm putting this project on hold til I get a response

Hello wolfter, we appreciate your feedback. Sorry to hear your coating's finishing color didn't turn out as expected; that is not the experience we want our customers to have with our products. To verify that your color was mixed correctly, we’d suggest checking that the physical color swatch matches the color dab on your can's lid. If the colors match, the coating was properly mixed, and the color is correct. In cases like this, the best solution would be to recoat in a different color. If the swatch doesn’t match the dab on your can’s lid, the color was incorrectly mixed, and we’d suggest recoating with new product tinted to the correct color. Please keep in mind that different lighting will affect how a color looks and that our online color palette display may vary slightly from the actual colors due to variances in monitor settings. Customer satisfaction is important to us. Please feel free to reach out to our Customer Care team directly with any questions you may have or for assistance. Have a great day. -Joanna Behr

1 Bucket handle came off the first time it was used 2 Paint is so thick it did not cover concrete pavers well using a half inch roller. Would require at least two coats plus touch up with a brush. 3 Color is a very poor match to that shown on the web page.

First of all, this is really THICK paint. Overall, my huge wrap-around porch looks beautiful. I ended up having to buy 5 gallons. Two gallons in both the first and second orders and one in the last. I kept running out of paint. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because the last gallon was a slightly different shade. The darker color in the photo is from the last gallon. The area where the color is different is on the end of the side porch.I had to go back and fill in the cracks and some of the nails and that's where it's a little darker. Some day I may go over it all again, but I'll be sure to purchase the right amount of paint in one order. A roller is recommended, but honestly after using a roller on the first coat, I found that a high quality brush worked much better. The mountain spruce matches my shutters perfectly and really sets off the white swing, rocking chairs, adironondack, and tables. It really looks good!

            Terrible quality
TLDR: Added sample photos of what Deck Over did to my deck. Photos are of the railing, but this was peeling on my entire deck. Successfully removed the remaining Deck Over with my power washer. I used this product about a year ago on my wooden deck. Started off by sanding and power washing my deck, waited for the deck to fully dry before I applied Behr Deck Over. Application of Behr Deck Over is pretty simple and easy, and was initially happy with the end result. My deck was nicely finished, and thought it was a quality product considering the price. Fast forward and I realize how cheap this product is and is not durable, does not protect against high foot traffic, skid—as it claims to be—and had started to peel away after the first heavy rain storm. I had to refinish my deck to a second time— sand and power wash off the remaining Behr Deck Over. I will not be wasting my money again to buy Deck Over a second time.

So far so good after about 1 month. It was rained on sooner than the recommended time but shows no adverse effects. This stuff if THICK, think cake or brownie batter. It was very difficult getting it in the gaps between the boards. Filling knot holes or cracks was not hard and it does a good job of that. Thankfully the 2nd coat helped fill the gaps, still can see the wood but not as bad as with 1 coat only. Because it is so thick it is also (virtually) impossible to cleanly cut it; be sure to use masking take. Coverage was as expected, we rolled for a textured (not extra textured) surface and like the feel with, or without, shoes. Wet surface traction also appears good. Only complaint was that the HD website says this product (1 and 5 gal) is only available on line. This was not the case, at least for my local store. Had I known it was available in store I could have completed the job over a week sooner (weather was cooler then). But I didn't have to pay shipping so price was the same either way.

              Not scratch resistant
I finished painting the deck a month ago following the directions to ensure the result promised by Home Depot. After waiting 72 hours to be able to use it, my dog began to walk on the deck and I was surprised that the paint is not scratch resistant. To be very clear, my dog weighs less than 25 pounds and there was never a mark on the old paint that I removed. I am very disappointed in the quality of the product. When I explained this problem at Home Depot, they suggested buying other products to fix the problem! Clearly not answer I expected.

Two people warned me not to use this product but I didn’t listen. I painted my deck not once but twice, thinking somehow I didn’t use it properly. I can peel it off by hand since it is literally falling off it is so bad... no chemicals or power tools needed. So disappointed.

                    Cr@p x2
This is the second time I've used it and the second time it failed. After the first time, I thought I'd just done something wrong so I tried it again. Now I'm sanding down and starting from scratch for try number three. Not sure what product I will use but it won't be this one that's for sure. If you look closely in the first image on the right it started coming off in huge chunks this spring. The rest of the photos are my current work in progress trying to strip this crap off. Days of my life I'll never get back.

                        Bad gallon
I bought two cans and ended up not using them for 10 months (weather got bad then too cold). I stored them in my living room so they would not be subjected to extreme temperatures. Neither were opened aside from tinting. One can is perfect. The other is a thick paste. Took it to HD and they basically said "lol buy another one". Pretty unacceptable.

                          VERY DISAPPOINTING
I purchased TWO 5 gallon buckets of chatham fog at $160 per bucket. Watched the you tube videos to ensure I applied properly. 2 months later, the paint is, for lack of a better description, washing right off. Numerous spots that the paint has came off. My deck looks TERRIBLE, out $320 and HOURS of labor because our deck is so large. I've always been a behr customer but this has me questioning that. I have attached one of the MANY photos I have of different areas on my deck.

A picture is worth a thousand words, so please look at the pictures of my deck as you consider Behr Deck Over. We applied the product meticulously per instruction with proper preparation. It looked great - for about 2 seasons. Since then it has peeled away. It's awful. I'm embarrassed by how my deck looks and am constantly picking up chunks of the product from my yard. I can't sweep, or "leaf blow" my deck. My deck used to be the pride of my home, now it is a disgrace. Heartbreaking to be stuck with a ruined deck. I sincerely wish Home Depot would help remedy this situation. I've tried to get help and it seems hopeless.

This product is horrible! I bought this product to paint my deck that was only about 2 years old. I followed all instructions to the tee including prepping the deck with the recommended product to clean the wood. It lasted several months before it started to chip and peel. I went back to home depot and asked a rep from the company of the product that happened to be there that day. He was absolutely no help and blamed it on the wood not being "old" enough. (Really?!?!) So now I'm stuck with this product and looks like I will have to paint my deck yearly. I DO NOT recommend this product at all. We are thinking of building a new deck just because of this awful paint. BUY SOMETHING ELSE!!!

Hi Jl - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear about the chipping and peeling on your deck, especially so soon. To fix the finish, I recommend removing the loose coating, cleaning the surface, then applying 2 new coats. So we can assist you with this further, please feel free to reach out to us directly. We'd be happy to help you get your project back on track. - Sara Behr

I painted my small deck (8x10) with Deck Over 2 years ago and have been very pleased with the results. So when it was time to paint my big deck (16x16) I went the the Deck Over again. The paint is really thick and is hard to apply, but I think it's worth it.

Makes a nice finish over an older but still stable deck. Decking looks almost new.

A good paint for old deck restoration
I was need to paint my very old deck and my friends who work in construction recommended me this type of paint. This is my own experience. Before painting I washed the deck twice with BEHR wood cleaner. On the first picture is my deck after cleaning. White spots on the boards are epoxy wood filler. This paint is very thick and I couldn't use roller for the first layer maybe because the boards are very old. I used a flat chip brush and I got better coating than with flat sash brush. But for the second layer I used a roller and didn't have problems like with roller on the first layer. For painting I used two colors SC330 Redwood for horizontal surfaces and SC117 Russet for vertical surfaces and for the lattice. The sized of my deck are 10 x 18 ft. I spent 2.5 gal of SC330 and 2 gal of SC117. Yes, this paint really fills and covers big scratches. In my opinion, this is a good decision for old decks.

Product worked great for sealing up cracks where salt and sand had weathered pressure treated wood. It was a slow process, like painting with oatmeal, but I hope to avoid repainting porch steps for a few years.
