Don't, don't, don't buy this!!!
Bought this product and had high hopes for it. Followed all the instructions. As others have said it, it is very, very thick and the coverage does not go as far as they say it does. It took me over 3 days to do my deck. It looked awesome when I was finished! Within a few months, it started to peel as others said. OK, no big deal, I did touch-ups and it was all good. Then it started peeling more and I noticed how wet the deck was underneath it (see pictures). As others have said, it traps the moisture in and has been slowly rotting my deck. This expensive project has turned into a huge mess that is going to cost a lot of money to now fix. If I could give it 0 stars I would.

Called deckover cause you'll redo next yeat
After sanding, using deck cleaning wash prep and waiting the appropriate 2 days for deck to dry, I proceeded to paint. It is tough to rolls it thick but gave great coverage. I was thrilled, until spring. The paint peeled off in strips, blistered and is worse looking than when I started. Horrible to sand off so I can start over.. DO NOT use this product. It even comes off the railing onto bare skin. Never actually adhered to the wood, just sat on top waiting to blister

Hello UnhappyPainter, thank you for your review. I’m so sorry the paint peeled and blistered on your deck and the railings. I recommend removing any loose coating with 40-60 grit sandpaper, cleaning the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner, letting the surface dry, then touching up and recoating. Crunchy peanutbutter would have been better choice
Don't be me. Don't read all the bad reviews and think you can make it work. This is seriously the worst product I have ever had the misfortune to use. It isn't oatmeal. It's thick, crunchy peanutbutter that goes on just the same. I have a very large deck and I bought all the recommended rollers and did everything according to directions. I started on the rails and knew I was in trouble, but I didn't stop. I was certain I could make it work. It looks like crap. I used every painting tool on the market to try and make this a smooth finish like it states it is. I did have some luck using a little edging tool and painstakingly smoothing a very thin layer over the wood. But I had to get a new pad every fifteen minutes or so because this garbage paint gets hard, thick and chunky within minutes of it being exposed to the air. Then you get those awesome super chunks that do not smooth out. You can't sand them away. You can't peel them away without tearing up the wood. I hate this stuff. I've finally called mercy. The front portion of my deck is trashed with this paint. I'm going to do something I hate and buy another paint to finish the other two sides, because this is just a horrible disaster. And just for those who actually want a gray shade, this isn't it. It's white. I'm not a novice painter. I know what I'm doing. This is truly just a horrible product. Family happened to come over and noticed the small section I started and laughed. They just replaced their deck this year because the person that owned the house before them put this on their deck. It is THAT bad. Once it's on, it's forever. I used a nonshedding, 3/8 nap roller to try and get a smooth finish. It didn't work. It's just so bad. Heed the warnings and find something else.

Hello JCAJ, thank you for your review. I’m so sorry the paint was so thick and wouldn't go on smooth and that the color wasn't right. Our Smooth DeckOver will be thicker than a typical paint consistency, but shouldn't be so thick and chunky that it can't be applied with the recommended application tools like a roller. I recommend sanding smooth any chunks left on the surface with 180-240 grit sandpaper, cleaning the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner, letting the surface dry, then touching up and recoating with a new container of DeckOver. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Please feel free to reach out to our Customer Care team directly for further assistance with this. It took me weeks to prepare my deck. Replaced cedar boards that were bad, sanded the entire deck, sunk any screw heads that were too high, filled every crack and screw location with Bondo for wood, washed and cleaned the deck twice before applying DeckOver. Waited longer than recommended after washing or rain before applying DeckOver. Looked great for 8 days, and then it started bubbling/blistering. I am extremely disappointed !

            Hi bubba,

Thank you for reviewing Behr DeckOver. I'm very sorry to hear about the bubbling issue experienced so soon after application, as that's not typical or what we want our customers to go through. The loose DeckOver can be removed with a floor sander/grinder. Home Depot usually has great options available. After removing the loose areas and cleaning with Behr All-in-One Wood Cleaner, the surface should dry for at least 24 hours in dry weather before recoating. Customer satisfaction is very important to us and I encourage you to contact Behr directly for further assistance. We'd love to learn more about your project and find the best way to help.

            Awful!
Wasted money!! Super thick, won’t pick up on recommended roller nor spread evenly. Tried two different rollers with no success. The area that I painted looks awful! The stuff was drying in the pan before I could even get it on the patio. Can’t believe I wasted an entire Saturday trying to get this to spread.

              Ruined
My $8000 deck is ruined. I went by directions and year after started peeling and now I got holes rotted. My wife walked out and hit a rotted spot and went ankle deep and cut her ankle. I tried to do this before and of course no response. Now I have to replace at least 20 boards and scrape deck over paint off. Gonna be fun. Do not buy this stuff. Looked great at first though. I just want it fixed but I know I'll have to pay to get done or do myself. Hard when you work everyday. Not a happy customer at this point.

                Waste of money and time
Please do not allow a sales associate to push this product on you. Let someone who actually has used it tell you about it. First off, it sets and drys so fast while you are rolling it on, now wonder I see all the complaints on it peeling. It does not soak into the wood, the product basically drys and configures to itself. I got this crap on my hands after a few hours of working, bam it comes right off, meaning it didn't even stick to my hands. I replaced a lot of 1x4 planks and sanded the deck. So I preped really good. I was tired of stains that never matched or still let sun damage in, so I thought this would be great. Why on earth is this product on the market, it's basically chemicals on a can and they know it's garbage. I added a photo to prove I just used it. I guarantee this will peel in a few months.

Hello Junk, thank you for your review. I'm so sorry the paint was drying so fast and didn't soak in as you expected. Our DeckOver is a water-based solid color coating and won't fully soak into the wood like a typical oil-based stain might. If the coating left a texture because it was drying too fast, I recommend lightly sanding it smooth, cleaning the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner, letting the surface dry, then touching up and recoating as needed. If the coating is still drying too fast, you can thin it with up to 4 ounces of water per gallon to help extend the working time. Don't even think about it
I dont often write reviews but felt compelled because of the misery this product has caused. Let me start by saying we are freaks about following instructions so the preparation and application were done correctly. Afyer a year the product is chipping and peeling horribly. Its just a mess. And our deck is covered ny an awning for the summer months. And yes we have snow in winter but this is simply not acceptable. As I write this im traumatized on how to resolve because I don't have 30 hours to strip and sand off like others have had to do. Behr offers no help, rather suggest it wasn't applied correctly. I'm confident all the high ratings were from people that just applied it because it looks great when new. But give it a year. Do yourself a favor, Google all the issues people have had after a year and how many decks its ruined. They shouldn't even be able to sell it....its horrible.

The only product I will ever use on my deck
My deck is 21 years old, in 2016 I painted it with Behr deckover in a cedar color and was very impressed. This spring is the first time I have had to repaint the deck since 2016. This time we went with the stonehedge color. I believe the paint lasted so long in good shape was due to my prep work. I power wash the deck, then sand using a belt sander with 36 grit sanding belts, power wash a second time and apply the paint when the temperature is below 85 degrees and never in direct sunlight. The first coat I apply with a 3inch brush and the second coat with a roller. I am very impressed with this product and will never use anything else!

                      Very Purple Paint
I was hoping based on photos I had looked at online that this Bordeaux paint would be a deep maroon, but as soon as I opened the can I saw that it was 100% dark purple with no reddish tone at all. I thought maybe once the paint dried it would look more like the photos, but that was not the case. Very disappointed in the color, but it did make my 12 year old deck look like new. The paint filled in the cracks well and even coated some of the very aged areas. There were no reviews of this color anywhere, so I thought I'd let others know how inaccurate the stock photos are.

I took days to PROPERLY use this product. A 16x20 deck 7 feet above ground. It ruined my deck and now I am scraping off the useless product. It bubbled, coukd be blown up with an18volt leaf blower. Im finally selling my house and now i am scraping it to rekease the moisture under the paint that did adhere. Do NOT buy this product. You will ruin your deck! Wasted so much money.

                          Behr deck over paint.
Did everything they recommended to do. Even went over quick with sander to get anything loose. Power washed used their cleaner. It was done right. Paint didn’t even last then a reason. Now I’m out there scrapping by hand to remove the bad paint. I would never recommend this paint for your deck. Waste of time an allot of work.

What No One Will Tell You
I researched this and other products very thouroghly. While I'm not a professional painter, I am very skilled when it comes to all facets of home improvement. And to preface this post - I followed all Manufacturers Instructions and watched every video out there. I prepped all surfaces as instructed. Here's what they won't tell you: 1. This product is very very very thick. Almost like cake or brownie batter. 2. It dries super-fast!!! You have to work fast!!! If you think you can use a brush and go back over something, you can't without it "caking up" and creating clumps, consistent to ground-up oreo cookies. 3. Mix the cans and buckets frequently.. Keep them out of the sun... a thick film will form on the surface -it will ruin the can and cannot be used again... 4. Buy lots of cheap disposable bushes and rollers. For the same reason... Once this product dries, you won't ever get them clean. 5. The cooler the weather, the better the application - as the temperatures really affect the product. 6. Oh - and the info that 1 gallon covers 75 sq feet? Not even close. Double your estimate. In summary. This stuff works. However, it's not as easy to prep and apply as advertised. And prepare to spend WAY MORE MONEY on materials for your project. I've included pics... You can see the treated and untreated areas. It's a 600 sq ft deck... fully sanded and cleaned.. took about 10 hours to do what you see...

                              Peeled off within months.
So got this for a temporary fix on an ugly deck. And it that temporary was waaaaaay shorter then expected. Used a few 5 gallon and then some gallon for touchups the first few months then gave up. Months i had peels a year was a mess and attached is two years later. I read Behr’s recommendation of sanding and touching up, yeah not going to waste any more on this. Pup in pic doesn’t scratch the floor if you are wondering. Damage was done all by it self.

Poor Quality, Stated Coverage is Total Nonsense
I bought this product to cover an 1100 Sq. Ft. Deck. I walked into Home Depot planning to buy (3) 5 Gallon Buckets based on Behr's recommendation of 375 sq. ft. coverage per bucket. I then read that I needed to do 2 coats, so I bought 6. Got home, rolled with a 1/2 inch roller as Behr recommends, liberally. Got to the end of my deck within the first bucket. I've been a contractor for 20 years, I didn't paint it on thin, I didn't water it down, I put a nice full coat over every inch and got 3 times their stated coverage out of the product. Now have 4 extra, non-returnable buckets of this stuff (about $600) that are essentially useless to me. Great profit for Behr. To add insult to injury, only about a week old and bubbles are appearing in many places on the deck (see image). My deck wasn't old, it was just built. The lumber is #1 DF boards that were dried for 3 months prior to installation and freshly primed. If this stuff couldn't stick to that, it can't stick to anything. Not happy with initial result and poor long term reviews here are creating concerns about longevity of this low quality, expensive product.

Hi TakenForARide, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that the coating is bubbling in places so soon. This is not typical, and I understand your disappointment. I recommend sanding bubbles off, cleaning the surface, and touching up. A primer is not needed, as the coating should adhere directly to the wood. Each bucket of DeckOver covers 375 sq. ft. in two coats. For your deck, you would have needed 3 buckets. I apologize for any confusion about the coverage. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Lasted one season. Very disappointed.
We have a very large deck and we invested a lot of money to redo it. We followed all the instructions Behr recommended and it looked so beautiful at first! We used Behr Advanced DeckOver in May 2020... its currently April 2021. It is peeling and looks absolutely terrible! Would not recommend this product!

Hi kmdh, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that the coating is peeling up so quickly. This is not typical, and I understand your disappointment. I recommend sanding the loose coating off, cleaning the surface, and touching up or recoating as necessary. Customer satisfaction is important to us, and we appreciate your feedback. Paint peeled off in a year
So disappointed in this product. I used the textured deckover before with great results. Replaced my deck and followed the instructions to perfection with the expectation I would have the same results as before. I now have a HUGE MESS!!! Would NOT recommend this product!

                                        Peeling off after 6 months
I used Advanced DeckOver in the fall. I prepared the deck well and followed the instructions. At first it was really nice but it did not last. It has been only 6 months and the paint is peeling. My deck will need to be refinished again. I am incredibly disappointed in the quality. It has turned out to be a waste of money, and more importantly a waste of my time. Very Dissatisfied!!

Behr deck over product is amazing!!
After 20 years we had the deck repaired. We had to replace some old posts and the railing. We've stained this deck several times in the past and now after replacing some of the posts and railings we had to re-stain the entire deck so it would all match. I couldn't be happier with the quality of this Behr solid wood stain! This is only one coat and it covers the old red stain and new posts to an even finish. It goes on beautifully, dries quickly, and is an easy clean up. It was easy to find the right shade to match the preexisting flooring as Behr has so many shades to choose from. I would highly recommend this for any age decking!! Will use Behr solid stain again!!

                                            Very disappointed in Deck Over.
We paid to have our new deck painted with this stuff about 2 years ago. First off, the guy we hired to do it insisted on brushing it on. I read on the can that it was to be applied with a roller and rather heavy. He refused to use a roller. So after he was done my husband rolled on 2 liberal coats. When first done it looked really nice. But after it being there for two years, we can’t get it clean, it just looks dirty. And it’s coming off in places. Bare wood is showing in places. We’re going to power wash it next Spring and touch it up and see how it looks. I don’t think putting another coat on it will fix anything. Very disappointed in this product. I wish we had just stained it, but it’s too late for that.

Hi Cjhill - Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that the finish looks dirty and it's coming off in some areas! To fix the finish, I recommend sanding down the areas where the DeckOver is coming off to remove anything that's loose, cleaning the surface with our All-In-One Wood Cleaner (this can be used at full strength for more stubborn stains), then touching up the peels spots. If your touch ups don't blend into the rest of the deck, a fresh coat can be applied to the whole surface for a uniform finish. For further assistance with this, please feel free to reach out to us directly. We hope to hear from you! - Sara Behr
