I received the FloorFix Wood and Laminate Floor Repair Kit hoping to use it on some Brazilian cherry engineered real wood flooring. I opened the package and the first thing I noticed was a lack of tools which was not a good start. The cup to fix was too fragile, and the Popsicle stuck and other tools not good either.
I ended up making my own tools and tried to match the color using the chart.
In my case the putty did not dry and darker. I was then forced to try and color it post drying before using the enclosed lacquer as the final coat. Overall it did not perform well, it did fill in the patches but with the lack of tools I would not use this kit again.
Cons: Difficult to Use, Not Durable, inadequate tools
The FloorFix Wood and Laminate Floor Repair Kit works, but requires patience and experimentation.
The CalFlor FloorFix Wood and Laminate Floor Repair Kit, Model # FL49111CF, is the ultimate “DIY” product - you mix the colors, you mix the putty, test it in an inconspicuous place, carefully clean up the excess, and lacquer it once it’s dry.
Mixing the color is a multi-step process because it darkens as it dries. So you mix a batch, apply some to a card or scrap wood, and let it dry. Wrap the remaining mixture in plastic wrap so it stays pliable. If the color doesn’t match you can modify it (including lightening it with provided white tint) or scrap it and start over.
It’s not difficult (watch the excellent video, read the instructions carefully), but it’s not what I’d consider “easy”, and it’s definitely not quick! At least it has minimal odor.
But if your beautiful floor got damaged in a visible place then it’s definitely worth the time and effort to match the color and save it. And it’s not very expensive so you can afford to experiment.
- It’s intended for deeper cracks or gouges, not shallow scratches (I tried anyway - don’t waste your time) Not the product’s fault, just an experiment that didn’t pan out.
- I couldn’t get a satisfactory “cherry” color - the floors in question are stained a particularly red shade of cherry, and the closest I could get was brown. You can see that the color-selector chart doesn’t have a match for my floor.
- Mixing is a bit messy - be careful with your clothes and surroundings. Have wet paper towels available to clean up the excess.
Note: We received this item free from Home Depot’s “Seeds” program. Home Depot only asked that we provide an honest review.
This kit provides a reasonable solution for small paint fix-up projects. I recently used it to touch-up some floor base molding (see pictures). While not a perfect color match, it was close enough for me (see picture). The color match sheet provided with the kit is very helpful. It contains paint formula’s printed adjacent to each color chip that are simple to follow. Detailed mixing instructions are printed right on the packaging, and if you’ve got a good eye for color matching, you can fine-tune the shade with the different paints and putty that come with the kit.
There are several components to this kit (see picture), including many small containers of paint, so it would have been better if the kit came packaged in a small reusable container to store. As it is, if you cut the package just right, you may be able to reuse it by taping it closed when done, otherwise you’ll need to find a small container to store these components.
In my opinion, this kit is intended primarily for paint touch up. Although it also contains a tube of (“Hard Surface Repair”) putty for filling gaps holes and scratches, because the putty requires no mixing with a hardener as would be typical of epoxy-based products, it probably will not wear well if exposed to heavy use or foot traffic. There are special epoxy-based products designed for laminate floor repair that would likely be more appropriate for those circumstances.
This kit worked well for me. It is easy to use for its intended purpose and I would recommend it.
Pros: Easy to Use, good color chart & mixing instructions
Great kit it you want to custom color match. A year ago I installed a LOT (800+ sf) of Pergo laminate in some high-use areas of our house. It is inevitable that some nicks and scratches will appear (for example, just when installation had finished I dropped a pry bar on the floor, and it made a deep gauge.... Murphy's Law in action). I've tried the Pergo brand filling putty, and another brand as well, but the floor - just like a real wood grain - is not a solid color throughout. This kit is nice for me in that instead of filling with "Cherry" filler, I can actually match the tone to the exact location. The attached pics were my first attempt at a fix. Truthfully, I kinda rushed it and just tinted by eye, but I've very, very pleased with the result

This worked really well! There was a pretty large pice of damaged laminate, and the putty, extra colors, and the lacquer at the end makes the sport protected and look almost like the rest of the floor.
