Yes, it flashes, flashing, flash, flashed.
Whatever you want to call it, yes it flashes. The darker the paint and higher the sheen the worse you see it. Probably best for flat white topcoat and that's it.

Thank you for posting your feedback. We are sorry to see your low star review on DAP Drydex Spackling Paste. Paint "flashing" can occur when the patch is painted prematurely (not fully surface skinned/surface dried), where lower quality/ insufficient paint film thickness has been applied. Of note, the "sheen" that that you appear to be describing may not be "flashing", rather, it may be an artifact of applying a paint to a surface (the patching compound), which is likely smoother than the surround surfaces (previously flat painted surfaces. This issue as described, is almost always able to be corrected with the application of a second coat of paint. Should you have any additional questions, require further assistance, or wish to discuss this in more detail, please contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477. DAP
Two jobs, two messy, time-losing repairs
I've used this "dry time indicator" compound in the past with good results, but the the most recent results have been less so. I was repairing paper tears, so I wasn't applying a thick coat, but the entire patch never cured (despite turning from pink to white), instead sagging and sloughing off the wall. After my second bad experience yesterday, I scraped off as much as I could, waited for what remained to actually dry, and redid the repair with DAP Patch "N" Paint.

Thank you for posting your feedback. We are sorry to see your low star review on DAP Drydex Spackling Paste. DAP DryDex is designed, marketed, labeled, and recommended for minor cosmetic repairs, such as: cracks, dents, dings, holes and similar cosmetic defects. As indicated on the product package label and supporting product literature: "DO NOT USE AS A SKIM COAT." (thin/resurfacing repairs). For this type of repair project, we would recommend the use of a more traditional joint compound such as DAP Premium Lightweight Joint Compound. Should you have any additional questions, require further assistance or would like to discuss other product options, please contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477. DAP

      Bumps after painting
It is true it doesn't shrink but it does bump out even after sanding. Everything was smooth. I primed then painted and after all was dry my wall looked like it had bad case of acne. I can't believe no one else has this problem. This stuff is TERRIBLE

        Not as advertised
On the side of the product, it states: “will not shrink or crack”. That’s exactly what it does do. I had to remove all of it from the wall and use a different product from a different brand. Note the attached picture below to see the best placement for this product.

Thank you for posting your feedback on DAP Drydex Spackling Paste. As is the case with latex based fillers, volume loss will occur as the product dries/water evaporates. This is a bad product, don't use
There's something wrong with this product. It took a week to dry in sunny and warm weather, with low humidity and no rain. When I was finally able to sand and paint it (benjamin moore regal select latex paint), it crackled everywhere I had applied the joint compound. I sanded it down again, then did a coat of zinsser shellac primer, but it still crackled a second time. I tried contacting DAP and they had no good advice for me. I'm on a tight deadline and I still don't know how to fix this.

Thank you for posting your feedback. We are sorry to see your low star review on DAP Drydex Lightweight Joint Compound. This product is designed and intended for use in the finishing of gypsum panel joints, nail heads and metal corner beads (thin "skim coating" applications). As this is a water-based formula, the sole drying mechanism is the evaporation of water. Dry time can be significantly impacted by cool or humid application conditions, moisture in the application surfaces or by thick (deep) applications of the product. For applications where deeper/thicker filling is required, the use of a heavier bodied spackling compound such as ALEX PLUS Spackling, would likely be a better solution. At your convenience, please contact DAP's Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477 so that we can obtain some additional information regarding your project and to provide you with more specific usage guidance or to recommend an alternate product. Thank you for posting your feedback. We are sorry to see your low star review on DAP Drydex Spackling Paste. Per product packaging and supporting literature "Do not use on floors or as a caulk, sealant or joint filler over cracks and joints where expansion and contraction may occur." Because the gaps in the board and batten wall are prone to movement, the appropriate product to use would be our Dynaflex Ultra Premium Elastomeric Sealant. I am currently remodeling my laundry room and had a lot of holes and touch ups to base of the walls. I like using this product, starts out pink and then changes color to white when dry.

Dry Dex uses - how we use it.
Dry Dex works great for texturing walls. You can add water to thin to proper consistency. We use our hands in latex gloves to texture, lightly smoothing with a 4” scraper. We let it dry and harden for at least a day. It’s best to use a light coat of paint the first time, and then do a second coat later. Too much paint at one time over the texture can cause the texture to soften and Lose form, if you keep going over it with a heavy brush. It’s great to fill bigger cracks and holes. Color change is useful, but we wait even longer before painting. You may find it easier to use a sheetrock joint compound if your simply taping between sheets of sheetrock and smoothing to a fine finish.

                It does crack when drying
This compound seems to be good if you are filling small nail or anchor holes. For larger repairs involving mesh tape, you'll need something else.

OK for patchup jobs. Terrible for taping.
This stuff is OK for filling up small holes and only that. I tried this with drywall tape, multiple times, and the tape would always lift or the compound would crack. I even watered down the compound, and/or wet the tape prior to application and the tape would always lift or cracks would appear - even after multiple layers to cover it up! I redid the same two joints at least 4 times and always got the same results. A different joint compound worked fine on the very first application.

                    Product shrinks tremendously
I don't know how they can claim this product does not shrink. If using it to fill even a screw hole, two applications are necessary.

Thank you for posting your feedback, we're sorry to see your low star review on DAP DryDex Spackling. This product is designed, marketed, and labeled for use on minor cosmetic repairs, such as: nail/screw holes, cracks, etc. (not for large format repairs). When filling deep, but narrow defects (such as a screw/nail hole), the filler must be “packed” into the hole a thin layer at a time, with a drying interval between. The most common cause for the issue you describe as “shrinkage” results from application in excess of the recommended depth. As indicated on the product package label and supporting product literature: "4. One application is usually sufficient for small repairs. For repairs deeper than 1/8”, apply two or more layers allowing spackling to dry between applications. 5. For a smoother finish, dip putty knife in water and lightly smooth spackling. 6. Spackling will change color to white when surface can accept a second application or is ready to be painted or sanded in 1 to 5 hours." This product has good idea to include dry color indicator. But the problem is this thing never dries. I waited for 1.5 days after a first application, but I still see pinky color where gaps were filled with this. I ran a fan to dry this up quicker, but did not help. This product is also very sticky, like jelly, so very hard to control and apply. I would not buy this again. The attached picture is my wall 24h after the first application. The pink color is still visible.

Thank you for posting your feedback. We're sorry to see your low star review on DAP DryDex Spackling. DryDex Spackling is a water-based formula, as such, the sole drying mechanism is the evaporation of water. Dry time can be significantly impacted by cool (air and/or application surface), humid application conditions, moisture in the application surfaces and/or by thick (deep) applications of the patch. As indicated on the product package and supporting product literature: "One application is usually sufficient for small repairs. For repairs deeper than 1/8”, apply two or more layers allowing spackling to dry between applications." As depicted in the photograph (attached in your review), it would appear that the thinner edges of the repair have dried (turned white), and the center-most potion of the repair has not yet fully dried (still pink). This would likely signal/indicate a change in application depth/surface conditions in that area. Because you did not indicate the size/depth of the repair, application surfaces, surface preparation, application technique or application conditions, it is difficult to provide a more detailed response in this format. Should you wish to provide more details or to discuss this matter further, please free to contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477. DAP
