It is Nothing Like Real Wood
DAP claims that this product "Looks and acts like real wood," but this is not true. Real wood does not get covered with mildew after rain. Real wood does not crack after proper application. Real wood does not pop out of holes. I followed all instructions on the package carefully when filling the nail holes, wood cracks and chips. After 4 days, I sanded and then primed with a latex outdoor primer, then painted two coats of outdoor latex paint. One month later, the DAP Plastic Wood is cracking in almost every place. Mildew has begun to form in a few places. Some larger filled holed are popping out. I will have to redo hours of work. Do not use this product or at least not outside. I cannot comment on indoor usage.

Thank you for posting your feedback. We're sorry to see your low star review on DAP Plastic Wood Solvent Professional Wood. This product is designed for minor cosmetic repairs, such as: nail/screw holes, cracks, knot holes, etc. The photographs that you included in your review appears to depict “deck boards” in rather distressed condition (nearly the entire application surface exhibits significant checking/splitting). Large format repairs such as rot repair, edge/grain filling, “skim coating” (resurfacing) are well outside the scope of this product’s intended uses. Likewise, as with any hard setting wood repair filler, they should not be applied to unstable surfaces, joints, seams or other areas prone to movement. Unfortunately, DAP does not offer an appropriate product to address this type of project/condition. Should you have any additional questions or require further assistance, please feel free to contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477. DAP

Thank you for posting your feedback. We're sorry to see your low star review on DAP Plastic Wood Professional Wood Filler. Based on your description of the product's thick/stiff/dry texture, it would appear that the product you are referencing is aged/beyond its shelf life. As product ages, it will thicken to the point of becoming difficult or impractical to use. At your convenience, please contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477 so that we can obtain some additional information from you, when calling in, please have the product package and/or your receipt available, as we will need to collect production information from, to verify the product's production date/age and so that we can reach out to the store where it was purchased if needed as DAP does not have direct control of stock rotation/inventory management at the retail store level. Product is trash
I used the wood filler to fill a few gaps on my porch railing. After drying, sanding and painting it seemed fine. But, after the first rainfall, the paint bubbles up and no longer adhered to the wood filler. Would not recommend this product for outdoor use.

Thank you for posting your review. We're sorry to hear about your experience with DAP Plastic Wood All-Purpose Wood Filler (Squeeze Tube). Plastic Wood (all versions) is not designed or recommended for use as a "stand alone" product, as indicated on the product package label and supporting product literature: "Exterior applications must be coated with latex or oil-based paint or solid color stain”. The only way that the product would behave as described, is if there was moisture exposure. This means that water is entering the patch through the paint or bypassing it (from the edges or from underneath). For applications where moisture is a concern, we would recommend the use of DAP Platinum Patch Advanced Exterior Filler. Unlike other wood patches and spackling compounds, this formula is designed for stand-alone performance. Should you have any questions or require further assistance, please feel free to contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477. DAP

I wanted the Bondo Wood Filler, which according to Home Depot after checking their inventory online, was in stock on the shelf. It was not. Home Depot directed me to the DAP Plastic Wood. It is not the same. I'm doing a repair on a lower section of a garage door. I decided to give the DAP a try since the other option was $2,000 for a new garage door. The Bondo, if it had been there, would be ready to sand and rework in 15 minutes. This stuff, figure up to 24 hours, plus while they say it is good for outdoor use, it does not do well in wet environments. That's pretty much includes most outdoor usage, and I expect it will encounter those conditions on the garage door in the lowest part of the bottom section. After sanding it down I put 2 coats of wood sealer on it. Maybe it will help. I needed more filler and I wound up getting Bondo Putty to fill in the voids and finish the job. I should have gone with that from the start and skipped the DAP since it is waterproof. The DAP may be OK for some jobs, but probably was not the best choice for this one. If I get 2 years out of it I will be happy.

Thank you for posting your feedback. Based on your commentary, it would appear that you are attempting to compare two completely different product chemistries (water-based acrylic latex versus a two-part hardener-resin filler), with vastly different performance capabilities. Because you did not provide any information on the size of the joint, application surfaces, surface preparation, application technique or application conditions, without this information, it is difficult to provide a response in this format. At your convenience, please contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477 so that we can obtain some additional information from you about your experience. DAP

This wood filler performed as advertised. I selected their Natural color because of the light colored pine trim I was adding to a bench project. What you see in the photo is one coat of a clear/neutral stain, and then 3 coats of spar varnish. I think the filled nail holes along the trim piece look great. Since these finish nail holes were small, I only pierced the end of the wood filler tube instead of slicing it off as I normally do. The "pin" hole let squeeze just about the right amount into the hole without over-filling it. This made the job faster and neater rather than wasting a whole glob of filler (like I usually do).

        Works as desired
Used to fill fairly deep (1/2”) chunks and some minor blemishes in a molding. For the deep chunks I filled almost completely at once and waited about 4 hours to dry, then sanded and add a second coat to smooth out imperfections. Size of tub is perfect for the rare project so it doesn’t go bad before it gets all used.

Ive had great success with the wood filler, both in filling nail holes and small to large imperfections in carpentry projects. It can be sanded, drilled and nailed after drying. It is fairly strong. I like this container as opposed to the squeeze tubes because it is mixed very well and has less liquid in it so I get little to no shrinkage. I can also form it much easier. As the directions state, I add slightly more to the area than need and sand when dry. If I smooth it perfectly over the surface, I somehow end up having to apply more to fully fill the surface after drying. I always use a sharp putty knife as well. This filler dries very quickly and is usually sandable within a few house although I generally wait overnight. It is also paintable and will take stain (but will not look like wood grain, it will just take a medium tone of the stain color). I will note this container will dry out over time, so only get a larger container like this when you need a lot of filler. This also cleans up easily with water.

This product is an ideal wood filler. For my wood rot project, it was easier and faster to remove the wood rot and fill the damaged area with this product versus cutting out the damaged area and rebuilding it with wood. Clean up is simple because it is a water based product. After 24 hours. it is ready for sanding, priming and painting.

Probably Not in the squeeze tube
I got this squeeze tube instead of a can cause I only needed a little to fill a couple holes on my project. Second squeeze the back end came apart and about a 1/3 came out at once. Well I put it in a ziplock bag but I think it will still dry out. BTW I was NOT squeezing too hard and I had cut the end of the tip off so the other end was open.

I've used different plastic wood products over the years. This product is the best. I used it to fill cracks in 6x6 timbers I'm using as posts on a deck project. The product comes out like a putty that is very easy to shape and use for filling cracks. It dries in a relatively short time (wait overnight if it is a deep crack) and sands off real easy leaving a professional filled crack in the wood. It spreads with relative ease and doesn't gum up like other products I've used.

I bought this wood filler to fill in the corners where crown molding connects. I have put up crown molding many, many times and in the past used regular caulking in the corners. What I noticed with the caulk was that after a few months, the corners showed cracking and sinking. I thought I would give the wood putty a try and now my corners are flawless. I get so many compliments on how "clean" a job I do on my crown. This stuff is awesome for that use and I'm sure many other applications. This stuff basically bonds the two pieces together in the corner to look like the corner is one piece. I can't stress enough to use this for crown molding corners or spliced sections.

I love this wood filler for paint jobs, it dries fast and is pretty easy to sand. Ive used a lot of it and learned you need to work the wood filler in and get the air out of the hole you are filling for the best job. It can be stained but it still visible to the eye that wood filler is there. Ive used this on furniture and home renovation projects.

Thank you for posting your review. We're sorry to hear about your experience with DAP Plastic Wood Latex Wood Filler. The most common reason for cracking is related to the use of use of hard setting wood fillers over cracks and joints where expansion and contraction occurs. Because you did not provide any background regarding your project, application technique or application conditions, it is difficult to provide a more detailed response. At your convenience, please contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477 so that we can obtain some additional information regarding your experience. DAP

Worked as advertised. It dried quickly and sanded well. Easier than using a two part filler. Worked well on both deep and shallow scratches. Use two to three applications for deep gouges. The area in the picture had a half inch gouge and the corner was missing.

Bought this product to fill in some holes on pressure treated wood so that I could reuse on my deck railing. Filled in the holes as directed in the instructions, let cured for more than 48 hours before applying wood stain and sealant. Applied stain and sealant and let dry for another 36 hours at least. Then rain came. See pictures of how the filler just popped up and did not stay in place. Not a good product for the my application.
