Needed this for a replacement from a portable-cable hinge jig. the bit that comes with the kit is hss and in pine it dulls quick never mind nicking a nail. Slightly expensive but the only one that fits this jig.

I've been using a HSS mortising bit for door hinge mortising template and they wouldn't last long especially on some mahogany wood doors and some unknown species would cause a HSS bit to burn right away. after doing several hinge mortising ,this bit seems to be just as sharp as new.

  • Size is deceptive
  • January 28, 2014

Be carefull if you purchase this bit for mortising hinges. They state that it is 1/2 . The pilot bearing is 5/8. So if you buy a jig or make one like I did you must allow for the difference. I sent an hour making a template and was surprised when the hing did not fit. The routed area was 1/8 smaller than the hing. I had to recreate the template (another hour). . Beware CHECK THE PACKAGING BEFORE BUYING . There are other manufactureres that make the bearing and the cutting bit the same size.

  • Won't work with most jigs
  • March 22, 2016

The bit itself is good quality, but the bearing is not flush with the bit. Most jigs require a flush cutting bit, so this will leave you about 1/16th too short all around. They must have thier own proprietary jig or something and that's why they do it. I have 4 different jigs but this is useless on all of them.

For a $30 router bit, I expect this bit to track Templates perfectly. Unfortunately this bit only cut to within an 1/8 of the template. Disappointed in the Diablo 1/2 router bit.

The cut diameter is 1/2" but the bearing is 5/8" so you need to buy a 1/2" bearing with it or swap out one of your other bearings.

  • Didn't work in the application I had in mind

I wasn't able to use the router bit in my hinge mortising template. I kept it because the shape looks useful. So I can't really say one way or the other how it might work.
