Hi Dave, we sell a fastener called the Rail to Rail Spring Bolt (SKU# 622-599) that is very easy to use, and provides ample strength and support when joining two pieces of rail together, or when attaching handrail fittings. Each store that sells stair parts should have these fasteners, or they can be ordered on the Home Depot website and shipped to your home. If you have questions, we'll reply as quickly as we can. As a rule of thumb, handrail should be installed with one handrail bracket installed through drywall into a stud behind it, every 3 or 4 feet along the railing. In some locales, that is required to comply with building codes. So adding handrail brackets is a good thing!

Hi rickb, indeed these rails are not once piece of wood. To increase stability and strength, these rails are three layers of red oak glued together. The layers limit the opportunity for moisture and humidity to warp and twist the wood.
