Fantastic defender!
Socal resident: I was skeptical about this decoy and didn't buy it myself. I have a water garden with a variety of koi sizes. I have caught both red hawks and heron looking for a snack on the waters edge. the wife caught me looking at this product in the store, noted that I put it back, listened to some more of my whineing, then reported to the kids that this was what I needed for Fathers Day. Wonderful gift, missing head fin, made one out of cardboard and drew an eyeball on each side of the fin (fin in the slit on the back of the head increases head motion), filled it with sand and put it to work. We don't get ANY birds.... no heron, hawk, dove, or humming birds.... not even a butterfly or dragonfly will approach but for a moment.... But the really great thing happened last night, a large possum must have been on the 6 foot high plastic fence around our yard. It tried to pass around the Owl but couldn't move it due to being filled with sand. So the possum gave it the old college try and while knocking the decoy off the fence, fell off the fence and landed on a small landscape fence below. The decoy head seperate from the base, the beak popped loose, but nothing broke. It took a moment to reassemble, then the decoy was returned to duty. We occasionally spend the day in the yard and place the decoy out of sight just to enjoy some wildlife again. The first time we set this down low the dog freaked out until we reassured her it wasn't alive. We also advised the neighbors, who have small children in the adjoining yard to explain the decoy to the little ones. The fin for the back of the head is essential for the movement of the head. it really enhances the decoys ability to fend off intruders. this is a great product and recommend it to anyone with predetor problems!

Pretty Owl
There were four owls for sale at my local home depot. None of them had the little plastic "thingy" that you insert on the back of the owl's head to get the head to move in the wind. I tried to make my own but it did not help. Without the piece, the owl that I bought did not move its head at all - wind or no wind. However, having said that, I did keep the owl for about 3 days and in that short time period we had a significant reduction in the number of squirrels that were running around our yard. We also didn't see the woodpecker that was the reason we bought the owl in the first place. If the head would have rotated in the wind I would have kept this owl, however, we returned it and ordered the solar powered version. We also filled the owl with pea rock so it would not blow over. I think the owl had potential but would have liked it for a bit better price.

Missing the fin
I checked inside the owl. Only the mounting screws were inside. No plastic fin to make the head move. From reading other reviews it sounds like a recurring problem.

Gardener Owl
Semi works for a day or so then has to be moved to keep scaring them.

Not Bad
Owl does work but needs to be moved constantly to keep the birds afraid.

Keeps birds off porch!
We bought owl to keep robin off our porch. We had bird droppings everywhere with potential nest building materials lying about. We placed owl, the robin eyed the porch but never approached again. Worked so well we bought another one for patio.

Good quality
Good quality product, but doesn't scare away the birds!

it's a fake owl. nothing more.
I really wasn't sure what to expect with this purchase. Just have a few fruit trees and was taking a shot that this would keep the blue jayz away. no such luck. the birds actually stand on it. I suppose it may work in different environments, but not doing the trick here.
