I wish I had read Gary's review before trying to install these things. The instructions show you should tighten the springs in opposite directions, which makes perfect sense to me, but you have to do them IN THE SAME DIRECTION! My husband finally figured it out after I gave up. Other than that, they seem to be good hinges. I would only recommend this product if they corrected the instructions.

Spring actions are too fragile. I think you'd need 4 hinges for a 3-0 x 6-8 masonite door. 2 hinges barely controlled an 18"x 24" door I installed

I originally bought just two hinges for a doggy door i made our of 5/8" plywood that was 30" wide by 32" high weighing 12 lbs. According to the specs only two should have held it, but it drooped so badly I installed a third hinge. The instructions were wrong in the way they explained how to tighten the spring and in the end I threw away the instructions and figured it out myself. One of the hinges did not work at all because the hole for the pin didn't line up so I have to remove it and get a replacement. Note: Without tightening the spring to maximum it still drooped. In the end it worked out but I'm just giving it two because of all the hassle I had.

If I could give this product negative stars, I would. I rarely write reviews, but we ended up buying four of these and ultimately, using none of them. I returned one as damaged, but I don't know if I will be able to return the other three. We attempted to install the door several times. In theory, the hinges are great. But after the first install, one of the two rivets (for lack of a better term) in one of the hinges kept popping out. It is just tension fit into the hinge, and simply does not stay put, making the hinge not operate properly. We took the door down, took that hinge off, returned it to HD as damaged and bought a replacement. Needless to say, the design is flawed. Before we even got that hinge installed, one of the rivets in that hinge popped out. We installed it anyway, thinking once the door was hung it might not keep coming out. It did. Then, less than 24 hours later, yet another hinge had a rivet fall out. So again, we had to take down the door, and this time we found an alternative solution. But, I am stuck with 3 hinges I paid about $18 each for - a costly project fail. Too bad - it's a great concept.

I tried double action spring hinges from a competitor, but they weren’t nearly as sturdy and couldn’t hold my swinging screen doors. These worked great and were easier to install.

I kind of want to give it 3.5 stars, but will round up. These are a pain in the rear to install, especially as the instructions are WRONG! They tell you to turn the spring adjustment toward the door for both sides. This is wrong and caused a lot of angst. On the side attached to the door, turn away from the door. On the side attached to the wall, turn toward the door. When you are done, you'll see the little stop pins touching the hinge. If they wrapped around inside and you can't seem them, you did it wrong. Also, they can't support a lot of weight. I had a solid core door, cut down to 36 inches (kind of the bottom half of a dutch door). I thought I could get a way with 2 hinges, but had to add a third at the top, as the instructions recommend for full sized doors. Maybe a hollow core would have worked with only two for me. Ok.. lowering to 3 stars. Will these hold up over time? Who knows, I only finished installing them about 3 hours ago. Would I recommend them? Well probably, but I would have like to have seen more options available.

Just installed one to replace a Stanley spring that I'd installed in 2007, and which got VERY heavy action over the years. Hopefully this Everbilt version will be as good. It looks pretty beefy but a bit less than the Stanley. IMPORTANT NOTE: I think that the directions for this product are in error. When they talk about winding up the spring tension, they state to use the tension rod to rotate both adjusters TOWARD the door. That's correct for the adjuster nearer the door jamb part, but for the one that's nearer the door leaf part it seems that you have to rotate AWAY from the door. This caused some angst and head-scratching as I was trying to install. (I've entered it as a question on this page as well.)

Great hinges, Brushed nickel made them stylish too.
Throw the instructions away as they were useless but the hinges work great, and look great. Easy install, everything lined up, so it was just taking off the old and installing the new. If you have a heavy door you might need to add a third one but the door I installed it on was a hollow core and two hinges worked out for me. I really like them and look like they are built to last

        Double Action Door Hinge
I had to replace a set of these on a house that was built in the 40's. They had them on two different door going into to the kitchen. Easy install, everything lined up, so it was just taking off the old and installing the new. Hinges work great, and they look great.. I don't know why I waited so long to replace them. Thinking about adding them now to a door i have in another room.

        Do not buy ! ! !
No quality control. Hinges fall apart. They do not close the door. Hinge angles are different from hinge to hinge causing variation in the gap between the door and the jam.

        Worst instructions
Just purchased and opened/read instructions. Now on web site for better instructions and there is no further help. After reading reviews, I will be returning to Home Depot for refund.

          Directions are useless
Construction and quality are both good and it works... that's the good news. I can understand the negative comments in other reviews but not a deal breaker. The not so good news is a list of warnings - 1) Don't even LOOK at the instructions. They are useless. You're better off going straight to YouTube and seeing one of these puppies in action 2) Plan for a 3/8" clearance for the hinge. I am working with a 32" door opening and a 31 3/4" door so there is a plane in my future. 3) I used three hinges and one of them has a broken spring. I can return it and HomeDepot is very understanding about such things, but it's annoying and time consuming. One out of three is not a good fail rate.

Good purchase with one annoying sound
Have installed two doors, each using 2 of these double action spring door hinges. Only one of the four hinges has a "squeak" that I cannot find or know where to apply lubricant.

          Poor description and specs
Home Depot needs to put an accurate description on this product, this is a special hinge and really needs to have accurate dimensions, specs. Specifically the maximum weight of the door that can be used and also the maximum thickness of the door, which is critical for this type of hinge.

          Weak
These are very weak hinges. Inadequate for solid wood doors. Used on 3x3' doors of 1/2" plywood in animal barn and they sag. There's too much play with the spring inside the hinges. If I had a shop I could fabricated for my purposes for 1/3 the price.

          Dutch Door
I cut a louvered solid core door in half above the knob hole to use the bottom half as a dutch door between kitchen and dining room. Specs show max 30" door/18 lbs. They aren't kidding. The spring wouldn't even lift the 18 lb, 32" half door off the floor. Adding a third hinge below the top hinge did the trick. They seem to work great now. I plan to replace the jamb-side screws though, they are not long enough. As others have noted, the end caps do fall off too easily (quality ding). They also seem a little pricy, especially considering that I needed three of them to hang half a door. Spent more on the hinges that I did on the door. We'll have to wait and see how long the springs last.

Great, but the post caps loosen up with handling and fall off
These hinges allow the door to swing open from either side and come back to a close. I used them on a cheap wood screen door for my screened porch (in hopes that my dog will get used to pushing the door open so I can avoid installing a dog door). The door is pretty lightweight, so I used only two hinges. It is just right. If the door was any heavier, it would definitely require a third hinge to have acceptable spring power. My only complaint is that the metal rounded caps (4) that cover the spring posts are simply crimped/pushed on and two of them fell off in my hands. A drop of silicone and it's fine, but this is one small issue with an otherwise solid quality hinge. Also, I had to exchange a new defective hinge, as it was missing the small metal pin in the housing that keeps the internal spring sprung. Made in China, so no surprise. Make sure you do a lot of checking and rechecking before drilling the holes in the jamb, because if you are a little off, the door will swing fine in one direction, but scrape the floor in the other. I learned that the hard way.

          Poorly written instructions.
The instructions for this hinge are the worst I have ever seen. The diagram showed the wrong way to install the hinge on the door. Now there are holes in the door that I need to spackle. The caps on the end of each cylinder come off way too easy.
