People, the slots are not for a screw driver!
So many reviews mention breaking with a screw driver...that's not what the slot is for! And that’s why so many of you are breaking your insert. There's a tool you can use, or simply use a bolt with a nut to drive in the insert. I prefer the slots down so the finished end looks better.

    Really easy to break
The design is flawed. When you tried to screw it into the wood. It can break. Then you have a hard time to get it out.

      No instructions but works well.
I broke the first one when I tried to use the notches as a screwdriver slot. I wound up using a quarter inch screw to drive the inserts into a 5/16 inch hole.

The insert nuts cracked trying to screw them in. Cheaply made!

Slot is not meant for a screwdriver. You will break the insert this way, even in softwoods. The slot is meant for installation with a special tool. Without the tool, you can thread the insert nut onto the end of a bolt, using another nut to secure it in place, then install it using the bolt head.

Well... I bought 4 and broke 2 with a screwdriver after pre-drilling and threading the hole in 3/4" plywood. I threaded the hole. Getting it to start straight, even pre-threaded, was entertaining. I think it needs a bare extrusion at the starting point. Brass is too brittle.

        unuseable, but pretty
Thin and soft/brittle brass. Could not insert in wood, broke off slot. Threads were not smooth and needed to be tapped to clean.

Easy to install. It's a great way to bolt pieces together.

These inserts are brittle. I snapped of the ear on the first one I used.

This ended up being the exact piece I needed to secure the legs to a coffee table, however the cut-out slot on one end put a burr on the inside thread, that nearly ruined the thread on the bolt. I ended up ruining one of these nuts getting it off the bolt. Examine it carefully and if there is a burr, dremel it out before forcing the bolt through it.

Worked as intended, make sure to install using a bolt and not a flat head screwdriver. They will snap with a screwdriver.

            Horrible for hardwood
The slot for a flathead screwdriver snapped off when inserting into a piece of hardwood. Currently figuring out how to get the insert out of the workpiece. Do nor reccomend for hardwoods. Might be ok for softwoods but i would steer clear of hardware this brittle in any use case.

DO NOT USE A FLATHEAD SCREWDRIVER
People complaining about breaking these clearly did zero research. These work fine. Just put two nuts side by side on a 1/4 inch-20 thread pitch screw and leave enough screw past them to screw into the insert. That’ll drive the insert in without breaking anything. The slots are NOT for a flathead. These arent the best quality but do the job just fine

                They break very easily
They’re slotted to accept a standard screwdriver. The end snapped off the first 4 of them I tried, and yes I pre-drilled the hole to the correct diameter. I applied very little torque (like finger tight) and the end where it’s slotted snapped.

                  Good brass specialty piece
It was as described, and stood up to the torque we had to put on it to get it screwed into the wood dowel.

Worked well so far - could use a minor tweak
was hard to get started in the hole. Make the first thread start with a smaller radius and gradually go to full rdius by the first turn or so. Also I would have preferred a longer insert nut, but none were available.

Insert broke as I was trying to screw it into the wood. The slot for the screw driver creates a weak section in the insert that sees all the loading when you are applying torque to screw it into the wood. I switched to inserts that had an allen head drive which installed without issue.

                      broke while tightening.
both of them broke while tightening them to the hole.

As online videos will demonstrate, screwing it in with a bolt and nuts works well. Attempts to use a screwdriver directly on it will result in breakage nearly every time.

                          Bad Quality
I purchased these to fix some chair legs. They are soft and brittle and the head broke when using a screwdriver with very little force. I was able to get a few in with some finesse and they cracked internally. I do not reccomend purchasing
