I compared these GripRite nails to the same nails I bought at a local building supply store. The boxes were identical in every way except for 2 letters below the bar code. However the Home Depot nails were noticeably different in both appearance and performance. The building supply store nails had a 4% larger diameter, 8% larger head, 50% longer point taper making them easier to drive into the wood, and most had dimples in the head (HD nails had none) making them easier to countersink. They also were truly 2" long whereas the HD nails were 2.1" in length. Most importantly, it was much more difficult to bend the building supply store nails compared to the HD nails. I am guessing that HD contracts with GripRite to make a lower cost (and quality) nail for them. The 8% cost savings of the HD nails was not worth the frustration of using them. Needless to say I will never buy nails from HD again.

Any Grip Rite nail product is sub standard. About a quarter of the nails in each box is pre-bent. Not only that, but even with pre-drilling holes, these nails will bend because they are soft and irregular. This is not operator error. I have over three decades using a hammer professionally. These bend like you are hitting a knot almost every time. Grip Rite nails are junk! Do not buy them unless you like the look of bent nails in your finish work. You will throw away at least a third of what you pay for.

Just like the rest of the reviews, these are soft, greasy nails. This is true for multiple boxes from different time periods, so it's not a fluke.

GARBAGE! Not only do they not have the divot to set them with, the way they are cut apart leaves a ridge on the head so the nail set slides right off it. Not to mention the black grease all over them.

The quality of the nail has diminished quite a bit. The dimple at the head slowly disappeared and the ring grooves on the shaft have completely disappeared so they don't hold as well in the wood. I've also noticed that these nails are a lot softer so they tend to smash even when hammered straight on. HD's purchasing agent needs to go to China and do a quality control inspection because the tooling dies are worn out and the manufacturer has obviously changed the metal composition. China is infamous for doing this. After the huge price increase, I went to another hardware store and found they sold this size nail in bulk like back in the good ol' days at half the price and they had the dimple head and tooling on the shaft. I've hammered in about 1000 of them and haven't even had one bend, which is amazing considering I was having about 1 in 5 collapse while nailing them into predrilled holes. I just got used to it and figured that was just how it was. Using these other nails is like a dream. Home Depot has dropped the ball on these and makes me wonder what other products got a huge price jump while the quality tanked.

I don't care about the lack of a dimple or the oiliness - the current version of this product at Home Depot is extremely poor quality. And the price recently went up! They bend easily. Some of the nails aren't straight. Sometimes 2 nails are welded together. The points are poorly cut and the nails don't drive easily (and sometimes the points have extraneous metal still attached). And it seems the diameter of the nail shank is slightly larger than what I bought a year ago.

Don't buy these nails without inspecting them for dimples. That means you'll need to open the package. Instead of dimples, the heads are simply snipped off leaving a ridge. #1, I think that causes the nails to turn inside the wood. Time after time, I drove nails into a right-angle butt joint; only to have the nail turn inside the wood and come out on one side or the other. At first, of course, I thought it was me (although I've been a woodworking professional and driven millions of finish nails). 4 out of 5 would turn inside the wood and stick out the side. #2, when it came time to set the nails (with a nail set), there's no dimple! It's impossible to set a nail that has a peak instead of a dimple. I took 2 boxes back and told the clerk that they are defective nails. I'm certain they went right back on the shelf, though. Defective nails? He must have thought I'm crazy. Note: I've bought plenty of the same brand finish nails from Home Depot in the past, but I won't buy another carton without inspecting the heads . . . for sure.

Worst nails I have ever bought. Not only does it not have a dimple for a nail set, they are extremely greasy. I have bought this same brand nails in the past and they were great. Do not waste your money. Shame on Home Depot for putting these on their shelves.

                  Oily nails
The nails have oil on them and I had dirty fingerprints on my new trim! Once I cleaned it all off, I tried to set them and they don’t have a dimple for the nail set.

These have no dimples?? The top of the heads are flat! In general when you buy this type of nail you want to countersink them. If you try to countersink them with flat heads, the nail sink slides off and punches holes in your wood. This is a major quality issue. Whoever the buyer is for Home Depot should return them to the vendor.

Why are these covered in grease?
These nails work fine in as much that they'll penetrate into wood if you hit them with a hammer. But as another reviewer said, they are coated with a black grease or oil, which will turn your fingers black. If you're not exceedingly careful you'll get black fingerprints on the trim, or worse on the wall.

                            Nails had oil on them
I don't normally rate nails but felt compelled to write one. I bought two boxes of these nails. I was nailing some trim and all of sudden I noticed my fingers were black. I couldn't figure out where it came from and then I noticed, its from the nails! Apparently they put oil on them or something. These are supposed to be finish nails, which should be clean. The black residue came off onto the trim when nailing in the nail. Terrible!
