  • I needed to screw down 3/4" plywood subfloor to floor joists to fix squeaks before installing new...
  • October 30, 2018

I needed to screw down 3/4" plywood subfloor to floor joists to fix squeaks before installing new hardwood and vinyl floors. I found just the thing from FastenMaster which has coarse threads near the point and fine threads near the head. The associate in the fasteners isle said I was wasting my money and those extra fine threads don't help anything. After 5 minutes of sales pressure, I reluctantly swapped those out for these general purpose screws. What a mistake! There are only 7 threads on this 2-1/2" screw and at least 50% stripped the softer wood joist when the head contacted the harder plywood. The cutter point also would not sink into the plywood without excessive pressure. I would unscrew and try again on each failed attempt which wasted time and battery on my driver. I finally gave up, drove back to the store and bought the other screws. Not a single one sripped the joist and all heads countersunk into the plywood perfectly. Now I have about 8 pounds of screws and lost more money than if I went with the FastenMaster screws like I wanted to do. Don't waste your money on these if plywood is involved.
