Love it
I’m very happy with this product, delivery and finishing was easy. I love the blend of colors. The pictures a before and after. I did not stain this. I used a wood conditioner and then a butcher block clear oil and finish. Definitely recommend

    Great Quality Butcher Block
This walnut slab is really a cool blend of dark and light walnut cuts. I added a little mineral oil to finish it after a very light top sanding. The butcherblock arrived well planed and didn't need much, if any work before the mineral oil was applied. Beware, you have to condition/finish the block within 4 hours of opening the plastic. I accidentally bought scented oil, but it didn't seem to have a negative effect on the oiling process. I got irritated I couldn't find a high-quality entertainment center to put under my projector screen. with a big 115" Cinemascope screen nearly every entertainment center looks goofy underneath. I bought some threaded nut inserts, made from brass so that the legs we made out of 2x1 steel could be mounted without having to drill completely through the slab. Brass wasn't the best choice for threaded inserts as it was too soft for the walnut which is a pretty hardwood so a few of the inserts broke while being put into place. I wanted to flush mount the bolts using countersunk machine screws at 3/8 bolt size but the bolts are incredibly expensive and I could not find 1.5" length countersunk bolts. Weighs a lot, like 120lbs. Steel legs don't help but I think its a good thing. You can really tell how solid this butcher block is

Nice wide staves, just like in the photos. Hardwood Reflections also did a solid job of color matching the sapwood to the heartwood, probably with their kiln drying process, so there's very little of the garish yellow after finishing. What I disliked: 1. Packaging isn't good enough to survive damage. Corners get damaged all the time, I get it, I don't expect perfection, and it's easily sandable. The problem is when there's crushing halfway down the length of the butcher block, on the face side. As seen in the picture, the crushing is so bad I can't even sand it off, I'd have to take over an inch off the block. As of now, I have to pretend like I don't see it when I walk by, and it's very disappointing. 2. I bought two of these butcher blocks to cover the distance of my setup, and for some odd reason, one block isn't as deep as the other one. Its about 39 inches and 38.75 inches. That isn't the issue, the problem is that the stave width isn't consistent for the sides, meaning it's impossible to join these two blocks and have the staves flow from one end to the other. Again, incredibly odd and nothing I can do about it. I imagine many people purchase multiple blocks for their kitchens, so I'm surprised HR doesn't double check for consistent stave widths. I like HR as a company, they make helpful YT videos, seem like good folks all around and I like to support companies like that. But the extra work I had to go through to make these blocks usable, and the issues I have to just deal with on a daily basis leave me a fair bit disappointed. The cost of getting more sanders to try even off the quarter inch stave gap, the filler to try to mask the crushed portions, they're just extra costs on top of an already expensive block. I thought about returning the blocks for a refund, but I don't have the manpower in this pandemic, and I don't know what else to do.

JayP-Appreciate the detailed review. I go through all of these reviews with a fine tooth comb. Your review pointed out some specifics we can work on. We can review our packaging and I will also go look at some of the walnut blocks. Both of your circumstances are unusual. Sorry for this experience but I do appreciated all the pictures and content--Jake HFAria

This piece of wood offers alot of value for the money. I used it to build a standing desk now that I'm working from home, and it turned out beautifully. The wood was packaged up very securely, and once I got it home to unwrap it, there weren't any major issues with dented sides, split boards, etc. The wood fit in the back of our MDX, for those wondering if it fits in a vehicle. Another thing to note is Home Depot said they wouldn't cut it for me, which was a little annoying, but not the end of the world. The corners had some slight deformation, but nothing you couldn't sand out. I trimmed mine down to fit a desktop size, so I just cut off the pieces that didn't look perfect. I think I'll try and turn some of the excess wood into a wall shelf or two. I ended up finishing it with 2 coats of Watco Dark Walnut Danish Oil. It didn't take too long to do, just a little elbow grease. The whole project took maybe 2 days, I'm curious how well the finish holds up. I ended up mounting it to a Fully Jarvis standing desk frame which ran about $450. Even after buying a circular saw, saw horses, and stain for the project, it still came out costing less than buying a real wood walnut standing desk already assembled. Those run about $1,850, though it's wide plank and more heartwood. Overall, I couldn't be happier, and it got me thinking that if I ever re-did a kitchen, I'd seriously consider butcher block for the counters.

Bought this for island update And I’ve never done this before. I used pure tung oil diluted with citrus solvent and it came out beautiful. You can really see the grain patterns and color variations. Product arrived quickly and packaged well. There were minor imperfections and cracks in the wood but nothing to cause issues. I highly recommend this brand and product. See pics of before and after. Really great quality for the price.

        Pretty but bowed.
Top is beautiful however it came in bowed. May eventually flatten as it over hangs however a pain to deal with now. Did not notice bow until after I sanded and sealed it a few hours after purchase. Also had subtle dent across top which only showed after staining. Make sure you check it over before beginning work!

I bought the butcher block countertop to use as the desktop for an office desk. I wanted something longer than my current desk but only as wide as the butcher block. I also loved the wood grain and pattern of the butcher block. The butcher block arrived as expected and in really good condition. There was one small nick on the edge, but I had planned round the edges anyway, so it didn't affect what I was using it for. I wanted a darker wood tone to the fininshed product, so I stained the butcher block with Varathane "Special Walnut" and used a top coat of Varathane Ultimate Clear Gloss water-based polyurethane (six coats). The end product is exactly what I envisioned. I made a few mistakes in sanding between coats, but nothing egregious. I mounted the desktop to a black pipe frame, and it's perfect for my home office. Love the finished product and the quality! Hope it's as durable as it feels! Looks great in my office.

Beautiful look from the variation in color of the European Walnut. Tight grain with only one small knot on the top surface. Appears to be very dense which we like but it has taken more than 4 coats of wax/oil to achieve usable finish. Arrived with a few minor dents on the corners and edges but we decided to sand/router the edges to get a round look to match our other countertops and soften the edges for our kids' heads. Highly recommend!

So far so good, I used light provincial stain and at least five coats of wipe-on poly. Didn't eally need the stain. With just poly has a beautiful amber/wet look. Very sturdy and hard with no imperfections. Made several cuts and bonds held no problem. I would buy new blade or freshly sharpened for saw if need to make cuts.

Excellent packaging, no scratches or dents. I cut the 8 foot section into 2 four foot sections to accommodate my kitchen. I routed the front edges with a 3/16th roundover bit. Applied six coats of clear danish oil followed by three coats of wipe-on poly. I sanded with a 220 grit pad between coats. The results were amazing! I have been using these countertops daily and they remain beautiful. I expect, over time, the topcoat may need touch up, but wipe-on poly is easy to apply.
