So we searched and found the Hakwood knotty pine beaded planking that had exactly the look we wanted. We bought roughly 15% extra to account for waste, damage, and all the normal things that happen when one installs a finish product. That worked out about right.
Prior to installation, we treated the backside of each board with Thompson's Waterseal. We did this as a precaution as, once installed, you will never see the backside of the boards again. That way, if we have a leak over the porch, the ceiling will be protected from water damage. On the visible side, we gave it two coats of a quality exterior semi-gloss paint+primer. That covered most of the nail holes and some of the wood imperfections. For the larger imperfections, we used a good windows/door paintable caulking to fill in the spaces then painted over that once the caulking had dried. This left an almost perfect finish. It has been in place now for roughly a month. It is still every bit as beautiful as the day we finished installing it.
Pros:
- Easy to install. You need to pop a chock line for the first course and make absolutely sure you are spot-on that line. Afterward, just be sure to snug up each subsequent piece to the previous. This will keep your course nice and straight. Highly recommend a finish nailer using 18 ga. 1 1/4" finish nails.
- Product is lightweight. One person can install by themselves; it is easier with two folks so that one can hold the other end of each board.
Cons:
- Being knotty pine, there are knot holes and splits. This is the nature of the wood itself. Buy extra to account for this.
- Material is somewhat thin. This makes it susceptible to damage from the elements (for exterior applications). You will need to protect both sides of each board.
Bottom line:
We ended up with a beautiful ceiling on our front porch, a ceiling that harkies back to a simpler time. We added a front porch swing to give us a place to go and relax, away from all the chaos that seems to be the world these days. If I had it to do over, I would still use this same product for our porch ceiling as it worked out well.
