Quiet, easy to clean, stainless steel chamber, powerful motor - EXCELLENT!
There is nothing NOT to like about this unit. I have installed dozens of garbage disposals in my line of work and this one gives the most bang for the buck, with features that matter. Quiet, stainless steel chamber, dual stage grinding will eat small bones (but I don't put them in it), removable rubber stopper allows me to clean all of the gunk that builds up around the rings inside (this is HUGE in my book). There is no easier way to clean a disposal inside and keep it odor free! This unit has been installed in my house for at least 18 years and still looks great, inside and out.

    Quality issues
This review is about issues I have with my older 555ss Insinkerator. It didn't last very long. It seems the inner housing has warped really bad and it's not sealing against the 90 degree plastic pipe fitting. I see parts that aren't stainless steel that are corroding and rusting. The motor is still working though. If the design hasn't changed much, these new ones could have the same issues. Maybe they're engineered to fail to increase profits?

Hi GCnLA, we appreciate your feedback. The life of an InSinkErator® Disposer is entirely dependent upon service conditions and usage patterns, just as is expected with other small home appliances. Rust/corrosion is considered a normal wear and tear. The amount of rust or discoloration varies and is dependent on usage and what may have been put through the disposer. Also, InSinkErator makes no claims that the stainless steel is rust free. We hope this helps.

      Very quite
Upgraded to Evolution Excel when remodeling the kitchen, great disposer, cannot stop it anything we have put in it has been devoured. The only set back is the rubber baffle that fixes into the sink drain is a bit tight and causes water to drain slowly from the sink.

        Rusting inside
After about 4 years the inside has started to rust, and the 2 metal pieces that are suppose to spin are rusted and will not spin. Have to try to get repair man out to look at it. Never had one RUST before...

Hi, thank you for your review. We're sorry to hear that you're having an issue with your disposer. Rust is something we generally consider normal wear and tear. It will not affect the life or performance of the disposer unless it is well outside of the disposer's lifespan. If the 2 metal impellers are not spinning, possible there's food build up or foreign object caught under the impellers. We have a troubleshooting guide here that may help fix the issue: https://support.insinkerator.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/522.
          Replacement InSinkErator
I replaced the same unit from 14 years ago. It was guaranteed for 10 years. These are built to last. I reused the mount and power cord so the installation was easy.

          Best Buy for the money!
We looked at several other ISE models before settling on the Evolution Compact disposal. We are amazed at how quiet it is! Plus it is 3/4 HP which is a bit more than our old model 60 ISE, which lasted for 16 years. We like the fact that the rubber baffle can be removed for cleaning plus it is designed for maximum noise suppression. I did the installation myself which wasn’t too bad for a 71 year old. It doesn’t take up too much space under the sink either. We appreciate the quality of ISE products and wouldn’t have any other brand.

I only found that there was a comercial version later!
I purchased this waste disposer to finally "gift" myself after having replaced several units over the years. I've been here for over 35 years and it was time for a treat, so I sprung for the best I could find on-line. So far it is the quietest unit I have ever had. And talk about thorough, I am so pleased that I got it. I had it installed and the installer said I made I good choice. Here's to the hope that it lasts for years to come!

              No issues so far
This unit is so quiet you can't even tell if it is running. The plumber had no issues installing. He said it is one of the best garbage disposal out there. The only issue - it is very large under the sink. Will only be able to store a few soap, dishwasher detergent, and spray cleaners because the unit takes up a lot of space. (See Picture) But I can deal with it.

Excellent quiet grinding operation so far with one potential problem.
The potential problem is a violent shaking as the disposer comes up to speed when operated with the sink full of water. We have a rather substantial Kohler stainless steel double sink. The sink itself goes into resonance with the cavitation making a lot of audible noise. I am a physicist and have examined it. I believe it is caused by cavitation of the the water column. The motor is so powerful it will cavitate when turned on when the sink is full of water. The other disposers we have had were not powerful enough to cause cavitation. We are careful to not turn it on until most of the water has drained out of the sink. I don't know how serious the shaking would get if it were accidently turned on with the sink full of water and allowed to run until the sink emptied. It might cause damage to the disposer mount or even shake off of the mounting.

                  Quiet and quick
I had a Badger which was very loud and took a long time to chop organic waste. It was still working, but I wanted something more efficient and quieter. The Insinkerator Evolution Compact was exactly what I wanted. Not only does it completely chop in 1/2 the time the Badger did, it is the most quiet Insinkerator I’ve ever owned. It was super easy for my husband to install with just a couple simple tools. Didnt’ have to cut or bend any pipes or hoses from the old unit.

                    Some issues; better than options
Issues--they have color-coded wires in the unit but give you a black plug-in cord that doesn't differentiate between hot and neutral. Even the 1/2 hp I replaced had color-coded wires for the plug-in, but it was not as heavy as a wire. Google told me which the wide blade on the plug end was; hot or neutral; same for the white wire in the unit. I was surprised this was noisier than our old 1/2 hp Ace unit was before it started failing. Probably because it has a 3/4 hp motor. It did seem to quiet down after some use though, and now is not objectionable and no noisier than old 1/2 hp was when new I don't think. Bottom line is that I wanted stainless steel components rather than galvanized parts like the old unit had. Since the old galvanized 1/2 hp unit worked for 10 years +/-, we hope this one will last 20 years. It's surprising that the warranty reports are so negative though for the few that have had problems. Seems like the warranty response isn't real great. In conclusion I'm glad we got this despite the issues above. The wire coloring was resolvable, the noise is not really an issue, and this is my best step toward not having to replace this unit so quickly; hopefully for 20 years.

                        Quiet and Powerful!
We replaced our twenty year old food disposer with this one. WOW! What a difference. Not only was it very easy to install, but it functions wonderfully and is so quiet that you don't even know its on, if the water is running. What a great improvement over our previous model.

Well worth the extra cost! This is a luxury model!
This 1HP Excel disposer is clearly an upgrade from the 1/2HP Evolution Compact that lasted 14 years! This unit is quieter and we are very satisfied with it's performance! It's heavy, highly recommend having it professionally installed.

Purchased the Evolution Excel InSinkerator many years ago with zero problems during that time, so purchased another for my Assessory Dwelling Unit garage conversion. Purrs like a kitten and goes great with my other stainless steel kitchen appliances.

                              It works fine so far
This compact garbage disposer suits the size of my 27" sink cabinet and is reasonably quiet, though not completely silent (as my dishwasher is). When cleaning out the grinder blades in the drain, I noticed that grape stems did not get ground up, but remained in the little drain trap, so I removed them manually and tossed them into the regular trash. I suppose not every food scrap is disposable. The disposer was installed by the contractor who remodeled my kitchen, so I have no personal experience regarding the ease of installation.

InSinkErator garbage disposals are designed to handle just about any type of everyday food waste and Evolution Compact offers a 2-Stage MultiGrind® Technology. The focus is on fineness of grind rather than speed. Quiet, Easy to Install and Powerful
This disposal is an amazing product. The installation was fairly easy, and quick too. The disposal came with all of the necessary tools, and the instructions were clear, concise, and easy to follow. The only additional item that is necessary for a new installation is plumbers’ putty. I didn’t need this, because my previous disposal was a contractor grade InsinkErator. All of the InsinkErator brand disposals use a universal mounting bracket, that allows you to quickly and easily, remove the existing disposal and mount the new one. As far as the construction, the disposal has a tough plastic outer shell, with sound deadening material underneath it. This disposal is one of their quiet series, and comes with a thick rubber gasket, that gets mounted between the bracket and the disposal. This completely isolates the disposal from my sink. There is virtually no vibration, and no rattling noise from shaking the sink. Even the drain pipe is connected to the disposal in a rubber seal, aiding this unit in being very quiet and almost vibration free. The disposal comes with 2 drain pipes, a straight pipe and a down turned pipe. There is also an area where you can connect a dishwasher drain hose, by simply punching out a knockout. Overall, this unit has been very quiet, almost completely vibration free and very powerful. This unit can grind up almost anything I could throw at it, using its multi-stage process. If you’re looking for a quiet, powerful, well constructed disposal, this is it. I can’t recommend this disposal enough.

                                  Very quiet
I bought this to replace an old 1/2 HP unit. The old unit was powerful enough but decided to upgrade when the swivel thing broke on the shredding plate. The reviews said it was quiet and I can attest that it is almost silent. It is a heavy item and I had trouble holding it up for attachment in the confined space under the sink. I used a bottle jack with a board and that worked well. Connecting the plumbing was a problem because...well, it's plumbing. Nothing ever lines up. It would be very easy for a new installation but trying to match pipes can be a pain. My only complaint, and it's a minor one, is the rubber stopper that goes into the sink drain isn't uniform. It has four folds that stick up but only three stay in place in their upright position. One of them always stays down.

                                    Quiet power, cost effective
Installation was no different from any other Insinkerator. Straight forward and easy. While the Evolution Compact is not rated as their most quiet model, it is massively more quiet than my previous Badger 5. The Badger 5 was 9 years old and the seals eventually failed. The Compact is quieter than the sink while running water, and I’m amazed at the value of it. It has ground everything from small bones, and onions, to watermelon rind. All without flinching. While the Evolution Compact is a little more than twice as much as the Badger 5, it’s more than twice as good. I’m totally satisfied with my purchase.

Much quieter and easy swap from older insinkerator model
The vibration dampening on the Evolution makes a huge difference in sound output. The older unit this replaced was very noisy but not unlike most disposals we have all heard. The Evolution is so quiet that if the water is running you can't even tell that it is on. It does a great job at processing food bits and I hope it lasts as long as the old one (15 years).

I've had this garbage disposal installed for almost 2 months now and it's working great so far. It's lived up to the reason I purchased it, which is because it was compact and quiet. I would have even liked it to be a even a lil more compact if possible. This thing is super quiet when operating. I have it connected to a flush-mount countertop button. You can barely hear a whisper when it's turned on. I'm having no issues at all with crushing any food remnants that I put down the drain. It's only been 2 months but so for so good. i can recommend this particular unit without any reservations at this point. If I had to pick nits, there are some other cheaper brands out there but I don't know if you get a better product.

Good replacement for my old badger
Our badger 9 finally went out. So I chose the evolution with the easy installation method. What I failed to remember was that this disposal may claim to be compact but it is maybe 2 inches shorter and much wider than the old badger. It is also heavier. I could not lift and connect it under the sink myself. I watched on YouTube and saw someone who used a car sizzor jack to raise it up. I did that and then 1-2-3 it was installed. I guess it is wider with more sound proofing because it is very quiet.

I am very pleased with my InSinkErator Excel with 1 HP motor and I’m surprised with how quiet it is (compared to other disposers I have used). I’m glad I got the one with the jam sensor (which is available only on certain models from certain retailers). The build quality seems very good and I look forward to many years of cooking amazing meals and letting EXCEL-6 grind up the food scraps. We dispose of everything from banana peels to avocado seeds; even peach pits (which many other disposes cannot handle). This disposer makes me do manly grunts of excitement (like from a 1990s home betterment TV show). Our kitchen trash stinks less because the food goes into the disposer. I very much recommend this disposer.

Badger 5 failed, decided to upgrade to a newer model!
My badger 5 needed to be replaced all the way back to when I first bought my house years ago. Previous owners abused it, home inspector said it was rusted, and I’m not surprised since I found metal pieces inside (you obviously can’t throw your beer bottle caps down this machine!). I got as many years as I could with the badger 5, but eventually it kept getting stuck, indicating the rust was finally taking its toll on the machine. Surprisingly, after I explained the unfortunate failure, insinkerator offered me a 20% discount on a new evolution model, a true testament to their commitment to keeping customers, whether you’re a hand me down owner (like me) or a long time loyal customer. It’s nice to know that you can count on them to stand behind their products and keep their customer base! The overall installation would have been very easy if I had just planned to replace all the chrome pipes from the very beginning. The evolution compact is NOT the same size as the badger, and I knew this going in based on the specification (6” down from kitchen sink, but only 4” down from the disposals main outlet, which is just about a 1/2” too short). If you are replacing a badger, prepare to buy an 6” extension pipe (1.5” diameter) if you are planning to use the 90 out of the new disposal. It was only short to the p trap a matter of about 1/2” or less, but I wanted peace of mind and no leaks, so I simply just cut the additional extension pipe down to 4” to make everything work, with plenty of pipe inside each joint. Just when everything started to line up, the main extension pipe attached to the p trap broke because, you guessed it, it was rusted out. Glad it happened since it caused me to purchased a clear p trap package and a 1.5” rubber coupler so I could replace all the chrome pipes with plastic PVC pipes. Had I just done this from the start, I’d have saved myself so much time and effort! I also opted to remove the original bracket and install the included mounting bracket since the original was old, dirty, and yep, rusty. I used plumbers putty around the sink opening, you don’t have to press down since the screws underneath will do this for you, but I did it so I could remove some of the excess putty before tightening the sink bracket down. I laid the new disposal in the sink to weigh down the new drain piece while I installed the rest of the bracket pieces underneath. It was a pain to get that metal ring installed to hold the bracket up against gravity, but I did it after leaning into the cabinet, with my back to the floor. The evolution was fairly easy to install, but it was very difficult to mount on the attachment under the sink because I was working against gravity and this thing is heavy! I kept getting the front and one other tab to line up, but that third tab in the back was a real pain until i crawled inside the kitchen cabinet and got an easier angle on it to get all three tabs lined up. Once you get them lined up and started, its easy to use the included hex tool to rotate and lock the disposal into place, which also makes the watertight seal to the sink. The best part is that after you lock the backets into place, you can still rotate the disposal!! This design makes it extremely easy to line up the outlet with your p trap or other pipes, really great!! I did the electric wiring before mounting the disposal to the sink bracket, it’s MUCH easier whether you have a plug or wire it directly, but make sure you have some slack to work with as this will help when you lift the disposal to the bracket and rotate it to line up the pipes. Once the disposal was mounted, it was fairly easy to line up all the pipes and tighten everything down in preparation of the leak check. I only had a few drops on the rubber coupler on the main drain, which had nothing to do with the disposal. A few more turns of the screw tightened up the rubber seal on the pipe and that was that! Love the clear p trap, you can see exactly how the water runs down the drain and know if anything is wrong before it causes a problem! This machine is POWERFUL! It surprised me when I first turned it on because you could tell it had higher HP, (i left the cabinet doors open), but at the same time, it wasnt nearly as loud as the badger. I cant wait to send food down this new unit and see it all flow effortlessly down the clear drain pipes. Really worth all the effort after all these years, just wish I did it sooner!!

Easy to install as a DIY and incredibly quiet
I bought this with the intention of having a plumber install it. Our old one (20 year old Kenmore) was leaking and very noisy so it was time. I hate electrical and plumbing work around my house as i'm not good at it. It was too small of a job for a plumber to give it attention so i pushed it off for weeks as we were having other work being done at our house in about a month and i knew that team would be able to do it. We then moved out our major work for a few months and i kept looking at the box and finally decided to dedicate a Saturday to do it. I evaluated the existing plumbing and I needed to replace a few pieces to make the new one fit. I took a picture of my setup and went to my local hardware store and they helped me get what i needed. Back at home, I watched the Insinkerator video on the install and went at it. I took out the old including the sink ring, installed the insinkerator complete assembly, hooked up the new plumbing, reconnected the wiring, flipped on the power at the fuse box (no tripping so immediately a great sign), went upstairs and filled the sink (no leaks so another good sign). Then the moment of truth. I flipped on the Insinkerator and it was so quiet that I honestly didn't think it turned on. Its a very low hum. I had a few food scraps at the ready and threw them down in it and whoosh they were gone quietly. I was amazed how easy the entire process was, how much quieter this one is and also how effective it is at bigger jobs like pizza crusts or even lemon rinds. It rips right thru them. I kick myself for not doing this as soon as i got it delivered!

Very pleased with performance, powerful and quiet
Selected primarily for the very low noise level. Installation was hampered by what seems to be the three (3) mounting flange screws being about 1/8 inch too short for my KOHLER stainless steel sink. This was overcome by putting a metal shim between the end of each screw.and the flange. Now seats to the sink drain 100%. Two thumbs up otherwise.

I had a guy friend install the garbage disposal for me. So honestly I don’t know how easy it is to install. But it’s sooooo quiet! I had a Badger disposal before that the contractor had installed and it was extremely loud. I’m very happy so far

                                                        Very quiet disposal
I selected this unit for the stainless steel chamber, a 3/4 hp motor, and reduced noise. This disposal delivered on all accounts. I measured the sound pressure levels before and after install. The original was 85bD and new unit was 78dB; 7dB lower. There is just a low hum. At first I thought I made a mistake, it was so quiet. I have never had a disposal fail, but the 8 year warranty is a plus.
