  • Reliable, sturdy timer

Had one of these in our apartment a few years ago. It paid for itself in three months. Just bought one for my mother in law. With her, it'll pay for itself in two months. It keeps time quite consistently. External override switch is a nice touch, and works well. Easy installation with 1/2" knock-outs. Water heaters don't use the neutral wire, and neither does this timer.

Pros Easy to Use, Compact, Eco-Friendly, Clear Instructions, Nice Design, Easy Installation

Water is staying surprisingly hot with wtr htr after installing this device. I have the 'On' time set at two times dailly for approx two hrs each time. So 'Off' time for wtr htr is approx 20 hrs. Should see saving of elec consumption and wtr htr wear.

It is easy to install if you can do the most basic wiring. The on-off functions are activated by screw-on pointers that mount easily and firmly. There's an external lever if you need to temporarily override the presets. We have our water heater set to turn on for a few hours each morning and each evening. I am taking it on faith that it saves power, though. I have no comparative data to show that it is truly effective.

  • Timer was easy to install and program

Bought this timer to replace a timer that was 20 years old. It was made by the same company that manufactured the new one. The old one was almost worn out so since it gave so many years with no problems I stuck with the same thing. The new one was easy to install and program and runs very quite. This one also has a view port so you can see the motor turning and the override switch is now mounted outside the door so you don't have to open the door to override the timer. So far it is working great. Saving me money on my power bill as well.

Pros Easy to Use, Great Sound Quality, Nice Design, Easy Installation

  • Good timer, got noisy after approx 2 yars

Easy assembly and hook up. It was very, very quiet up until last week, about 2 years old. I started looking for a new drive motor but couldn't find one. I ended up, pulling the unit apart (one spring clip at the top, inside) and spray the moving gears with lithium spray grease. That made the unit nice and quiet again!!!

  • Going back to analog for a water heater timer
  • June 04, 2013
  • Verified Purchase & Recommended Product

After trying a GE 7 day digital timer and having it fail after two years I researched manual analog timers. I have been using one at work for over 20 years without a problem. The Intermatic little gray box WH40 was given high marks by all and seems to be living up to the hype. The one complaint of noise must have been an isolated instance or operator induced. I went with the version that has the outside switch so my wife would not open the box.

  • Bought as replacement for identical timer that worked reliably for 20 years
  • October 29, 2016

I bought 2 of these about 20 years ago to control swimming pool pumps. One of them has just died. The switch still works, but the clock motor quit. I was very glad to find that the exact same product is still available. If this new one is half as good as the old ones, I'll be satisfied.

Installation is very straght forward and easy to set up and operate. Like the manual lever, again easy to turn on or off at "other" than selected times if needed. The only caution and this Clearly stated in the installation instructions is to Not try and switch the timer on or off manually 30 minutes before or after your set on or off time.
