I bought this a little over a month ago. I had many cables in my garage, that I wanted to test and see if they work working. Gives us you all the results you need telling you if the wires are lined up correctly or not. A new feature over the scout pro 2, is that you can measure cable length which the pro 2 did not have. I love the new lcd back light screen gives you easy reading. If you do network cabling full time, this is a great tool to have. You can also get this to do home projects!

Design flaw
I had purchased this device four months ago and it has a design flaw it is that the barrel on the top will break as soon as you twist something on it because there is no bracket securing it I haven’t really use this device but when I did that is how I found out I had opened it up and discovered this design flaw

Works on RG59/RG6/RG6Q & CAT 3.5,6,5e,6A
This Klein coax & CAT 5 & 6 stripper VDV110-295 is a handy little tool for stripping RG59/RG6/RG6Q & CAT 3,5,6,5e,6A. It strips the RG cables both the inner center copper wire & the shield perfectly, no cutting any strands of the shield, as well as striping CAT cables perfectly. No more trying to use a knife or wire cutters and nicking the inner wires! It's nice and light & small to carry around in your bag or pocket. Comes with good easy to follow instructions and nice pictures (see pic below) that help show you how to set up & use the tool.

So far, I’ve used this Scout Pro tester to identify the CATV ports in my house. I’m getting ready to cut the cord with cable TV and switch to over-the-air HDTV reception. I still need cable internet, however, so I need to know which of six cable runs connects to the port where my cable modem is plugged in.
Before using the tester, I read the instruction manual carefully to understand how to check for continuity and port identification. Each of the seven buttons on the keypad has multiple functions, so some initial familiarity with the functions detailed in the manual was helpful. The tester is easy to use. I had no problem mapping out my cables using the included CoaxMap™ Location ID F-connectors. I verified that a couple of the cables were mislabeled, and one of them has a short. For the fun of it, I tried the length measurement function on a 125-ft run of cable that connects to my HD antenna. The tester reported a length of 128 ft, well within its ±5% accuracy specification.
The VDV501-851 tester is a capable tool. Its use saved me a considerable amount of time identifying my cables.

Easy to use, Data and Coax cable tester. Does this job well.
The first thing I used this for was to quickly identify the four jacks that were installed for my home network. They weren't labelled which meant any sort of troubleshooting or change was really slow. I put four remotes on the four distant ends, then quickly identified which jack was which. Very nice...
This gizmo won't tell you data transmission speeds (that would be lovely - but costs a lot more $$$). It will let you test coax cables, jacks, etc., for opens, shorts, miswires, or pair faults.
It also supports a probe for tone testing (sold separately - I don't have one - VDV500-123)
If you are testing a hub or switch, it has a "Hub blink mode" to identify port location
Comes with five (of each) little remotes for LAN and Coax for identifying different remote cables.

Well built with a very sturdy case and the ability to trace a variety of circuit types. This kit is very complete with numbered terminators to identify end points of network and cable runs. This allows one to trace a house with only one session running around the house to insert the plugs and then be able to trace them at the breakout panel.
Very handy for sorting out the unusual labels for the wires in the panel.
The backlit panel really helps in enclosed spaces.

Not a tool for a handyman put a valuable meter for IT, cable or phone technicians. It is light weight and it has the capabilities to measure (RJ11/12), data (RJ45) and video (F-connector) coax cables. Coax and RJ 45 cables are being used a large amount now in the industry and as all cables can develop issues over time. I have to make multiple RJ 45 cables by installing my own ends as I have COAX cables for various pieces of equipment and having a method to test before installing saves me time and most of all frustration later. I recommend this meter.

I’m a semi-retired I.T. technician and I try to leave the cabling jobs to the younger folks but sometimes I have to troubleshoot cables anyway.
The Klein Scout Pro 3 tests phone, Ethernet, and coax cables.
It offers a backlit screen, which is handy, and a 9-volt battery is included.
On the downside, it doesn’t come with a case.
It also doesn’t come with a toner wand (sold separately, Klein recommends the VDV500-123 probe). I’ve seen a couple of online videos that show the Scout will work with other brands of toner wand, but it seems to be hit-and-miss so if you’re planning on using this as a cable tracer you may as well plan on getting a VDV500 along with it. I haven’t gotten mine yet, but it’s on my ‘buy’ list.
The kit does include the Scout 3, an internally stored remote, 5 RJ45 remotes, 5 coax remotes, and an F-connector (for coax).
The battery powers off if the unit isn’t used for a while and there’s a voltage warning on the tool in case you unintentionally plug into a live P.O.E. connection or some such.
Fit and finish is acceptable, but nothing exceptional. Getting the battery installed was a bit of a trudge – the snap on connectors were a tight fit on the 9-volt. I’d advise using care when installing or removing the battery and be careful of how you route the battery wires. The push buttons are positive and can be operated when wearing light gloves (but maybe not so much really thick winter gloves). YMMV.
If you’re new to this type of tool you may find the instructions included somewhat lacking – I think they’re intended for experienced techs. However, there are a number of online videos for the Scout Pro and Scout Pro 2 (and other Klein models) that are very instructive.
In use I’m finding the new Scout to be very accurate – it does a nice job of testing the length of Ethernet cables and for my jobs that’s a nice feature to have. I don’t troubleshoot voice or video cables on a regular basis, so I can’t really comment on that aspect of the tool. For testing cat5, cat5e, or cat6 connections though, it’s working very well for me. I also don’t install (or haven’t while I’ve had this tool, anyway) new patch panels and fresh data drops, but I think this tool would be very handy for those chores.
Klein offers a two-year warranty on the tester, and Home Depot offers their 90-day return policy.
It’s a good tool at a reasonable market price that works as advertised and I’ve seen no reason why the tool shouldn’t get full marks. Of course, I can’t speak to longevity – only time will tell on that score.
HTH

Jim

This tester is really nice. I use it to the map out coax TV cabling or telephone wiring- something rare in this type of device. I recently found a bad coax cable, so this thing has paid for itself in frustration prevention if nothing else. I also build a lot of RJ-45 cables from scratch, and some of those are cross-over. This thing tells me which one I have and if it is good or not. It's a HUGE time-saver. I think it's meant to be holstered, so there is no case. Also, the remote plugs come in a foam block but are separate, so you need to have a home for them when you're on the job. However, that's easy enough to do if you know about it. Great tool!

I've used several different types of testers in the past, but none had the ability to map out coax TV cabling or telephone wiring. I've found it useful for quickly determining bad coax terminations without having to disconnect splitters since each location mapping remote is uniquely identified. In most cases, five remotes has been enough for my purposes.
I also used it to determine bad RJ45 connector wiring. In a project I was involved with a while back this tool would have saved us a ton of time & money because the technician who installed & hooked up the connectors insisted everything was correct. We could have proved him wrong in a couple of minutes with this tester; instead it cost us several weeks!
My only objection with this tool is that a casing case should be provided for the remotes, which would get lost otherwise. I found a food container about the right size for the remotes & the foam piece they are stored on.

Purchased this product because I get horrible support from my local cable provider. Wanted to test the internal cable runs before they came out and charged me a fortune.
First tested for coaxial cable continuity from the patch panel on the incoming line to all the drops(2). Test was easy to execute and results were instantaneous.
Second tested the coaxial cable length to see actual lengths and confirm that there was a short run(Drop 1) and a longer run(drop 2). This was done easily after I realized that a test on the patch cable of 1 meter did not work.
I would have preferred to get a pouch with this product, but it can be ordered.
The instructions seemed clear enough but it took several test runs to be able to fully comprehend what was being outlined.

The Klein scout pro 3 is a must have for anyone doing low voltage wiring. The scout pro is a nice compact Lan and coaxial wire mapper. It comes with 5 Lan jacks and 5 coaxial jacks. When you put the jacks in the appropriate jacks and when you are at the termination board it will tell you which wire goes to the jack that that number remote goes to. It comes with the jacks and mapper along with a 9 volt battery to power it. The mapper also works with the Klein tone generator tracer head.

This Klien Tools Scout Pro 3 tester kit is an excellent tool for checking the continuity of any coax, network (RJ45) or phone (RJ11) cables. It comes complete with the tester, a set of five numbered coax connectors, set of five numbered network connectors and a cable connector. It even included the required 9 volt battery. The connectors can be placed on up to five wall ports in order to verify the viability of the cables that are in the walls. It will display, by number, the status of each. It also allows you to validate the continuity of cables with it's pull out handle attachment. This is truly a great tool.

The Adaptors supplied with this Tester is not well thought out. Its marked as a Cable Tester. Coax and RJ cables all have male connectors. the Test Plus all have male connectors. It came with one Coax Adaptor, and you can't even test one cable with that much less 5. You need 5 more Coax adaptors to utilize all 5 testers at once. The only way to use the RJ45 Identifiers is if its wired to a jack.

This is a great cable tester. Had one for several years, took it on a mission trip to a hospital in Zimbabwe, trained the local electricians how to use it to test new data cables. Left it with them. This one now is my replacement, has a length measurement function as a bonus (haven’t tried that yet).

Pretty straightforward to use just make sure you insert you RG6 or whatever coax cable through the intended side. There’s 2 blades to cut at different depths inside the tool. It’s not really marked what side to insert from but after you do it wrong once you’ll know lol. Good tool overall.
