Very good surface preparation.removes rust and grime beneath the surface ready for painting. No more sanding.

I use gloss off before I paint old furniture. it removes years of dirt, grease, and wax. It's the best product I have found. The reviewer that gave it 2 stars acts as if its a primer...it is not. Its a surface prep. A step before priming or painting. I am usually able to skip priming by using the gloss off because the gloss off removes the glossy surface of the furniture and allows the surface to have some tooth for the paint to grab hold of. Saves me time and money by eliminating the primer step when using chalk paint and other new furniture paints.

For me, this is just what I needed because I painted some bookcases with a high-gloss black oil-based enamel and they came out looking terrible and cheap. This stuff toned down and took away the awful looking gloss.

There is no substitute for sanding or other proper preparation of your surfaces, but this works well enough for cheap projects. I was going to decoupage a table that I wanted to paint first, and it worked well enough for something I was otherwise covering. The paint went on smooth and stuck nicely.

I used this product on a painting project of a small lantern from that swedish "some assembly required" shop. I wiped the product on, let it stand per the directions, and then wiped it off. It definitely took the shiny finish off the factory paint job, and my paint seems to have stuck quite nicely. I can't say for sure that the product actually did anything, since I did not do a control study where I tested an area that had not been treated with the Gloss-Off. However, I can say that my paint seems to have adhered quite well after using this product, so... it seems to have worked.

I tried this on several surfaces with a high quality exterior latex paint containing a primer. On a white exterior gloss surface, the Gloss Off may have made a difference in the paint adhering better, but honestly, I couldn't see a difference in the sections I painted: on one I used the Gloss Off and the other I simply washed and painted. I was disappointed when using the Gloss Off on a previously varnished surface. I'm not sure how, but it appears to have softened the varnish enough to bleed through the white paint. I have to repaint this door all over again. Overall, I don't see that it made enough difference. I plan to try it once more on interior gloss enamel on kitchen cabinets. I am hoping for better results. I would not recommend this at this time.

It is easy to put on and it doesn't have the fumes that the other products do. After using it I don't see much difference in the before and after. I am using Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 for the primer and it works fairly well.
