I really like the way this lock looks, but I was a little disappointed to find that it requires a smart home hub in order to be programmed remotely. I have no interest in setting up a smart home otherwise so I was hoping there would just be a free app that it would work with. Unfortunately that is not the case. I would recommend it if you already have a hub it would work with, but otherwise you might want to get a different lock. It is fairly easy to manually program, except that you have to unscrew the cover. The lock mechanism does work very smoothly and we love the smartkey system.
What a nice deadbolt lock. Very easy to install and works seamlessly with my existing Z-wave hub. I use Wink2 hub, but there are many options. Installation was a breeze. The most difficult part is lining up the deadbolt to the door frame hole...but you can use double sided tape to make sure the door strike is in right place before mounting with screws.
Smart ReKey feature was awesome since I already use Kwikset at all entry doors in my house. I was able to rekey without hiring a locksmith and now I can use one key for all doors!
The contemporary iron black matches my front door since my doorbell is black and my hardware is vintage black/brown.. Super elegant!!! If you use Smart home devices from top brands, you can open the lock by voice control. The mechanism is a tad bit loud, so I wouldn't put one right next to a baby's room...

This is one of the best upgrades for a secure home and it's as easy to install as any other dead bolt on the market. Now you can setup as many as 30 entry codes and keep track of how they are used. And on most doors that already have a dead bolt you will only need a #2 Phillips.
Most new doors are all predrilled for deadbolts, and most have a 2 3/4" backset from the edge of the door. This kit will also fit the 2 3/8" backset. This kit will also accommodate the older 1 1/2" thru hole (reducer Included) as well as the new more common 2 1/8" hole.
Everything on this lockset looks and feels like it's made for many years of reliable service. All the finishes are very high quality. This deadbolt has a tapered bolt (see photo), if your door is slightly misaligned this bolt will slide past that misalignment.
The directions are very complete and walk you thru every step. Making this a very simple and easy install that takes no more than an hour on doors ready to accept a deadbolt.
Once installed you can open your door before you exit your car or you can open it whenever you need remotely. You can also track who is opening your door due to the 30 available user assigned door codes.
Highly recommend this as a very good upgrade to any outer door.
Pros: Easy to Install, Good Size & Weight, High Quality, Lots of Features
I absolutely love this lock. No more losing my keys or getting locked out. This has a spare key just in case. The instructions were easy to follow and the install was a snap. I like the dark brown finish. The matte finish blends well with my door and house colors. I will eventually add this to my back door as well. This adds the security I was looking for with a little style.
Pros: Durable, Easy to Install, Easy to Use, Looks Great, Sturdy, Stylish
This fair rating is solely based on the fact that Kwikset is promoting this lock as having SmartKey Security and that it takes minuets to install.
Let's just start out by saying there are three things to this lock 1) the lock itself as a locking device - not to much different than any other deadbolt; 2) the ability to set codes and not have to use a key - and for this it's good; and 3) a device that has connectivity and can be controlled remotely by an app on your phone and/or computer - and this is this product's downfall.
If you are going to install this lock, and use it as a lock with no codes, it really doesn't take that long to install in an already prepared door (meaning that you are going to replace an existing lock.) But why spend $200 if you only need a nice deadbolt. If you want to add codes, then plan on spending about 20-30 minutes setting them up. But it does not install in minuets as claimed.
I also seriously doubt claims that this device automatically connects seamlessly to an existing network without an intermediate hub. That's because this lock works through the proprietary Z-Wave hub. It is suggested in the instructions that this lock can be set up and controlled by the Kwik Set App but IT DOES NOT WORK if you don't have the Z-Wave Smart Hub.
I have 38 devices in my house that are all connected via WiFi including thermostat, lights, dryer, fridge, doorbell, sound system, security, etc. and I have had no problem connecting any of them to my current network. Not so this door lock. I had to buy a Z-Wave smart hub and I was willing because this girl likes gadgets. Thus began all my problems. It's terribly complicated to connect to this kind of hub. For one, there is an "owner" and then that owner has to invite others. And each person has to install the app first but then they also become "owners" and can't use the "member" function to get the invite. Not sure how my husband figured it out but finally I was able to get a screen that showed the QR code to let me join.
As far as theoretically connecting to Alexa, have tried all the directions and even on the forums for Kwikset, SmartThings & Amazon Alexa looking for known issues nothing has been able to resolve the issue. So for the average user this is going to be terribly frustrating. We have four techies in the house and none were able to figure out how to make the LOCK-HUB-PHONE-ALEXA connections work together.
The biggest annoyance in the instructions is that very little is mentioned regarding the hub. The only piece of info in the paper instructions is that you need to get the app and press the "A" side to connect to the app. It's called a SmartCode 914 but that isn't the app name. The app is Kwikset. That was another confusing bit of lack of information. So, if you do not have a compatible hub, this does not work. The app can't find anything on it's own. If you are an unaware buyer and don't understand how this device is to be controlled "wirelessly", the instructions and Kwikset do little to help you understand.
Pros: Looks Great, Nice Design, Stylish
Cons: Difficult to Install, Difficult to Use, needs more equipment to work, frustrating to connect
The SMARTCODE 914 Z-WAVE CONTEMPORARY IRON BLACK SINGLE CYLINDER ELECTRONIC DEADBOLT FEATURING SMARTKEY SECURITY was an easy upgrade from my traditional deadbolt. My door already had the necessary cutouts all the was required was installing and refitting the new parts. There was a little trimming with a chisel and razor knife because the plates on the new lock were a tad larger but nothing major no holes to drill or cutouts to make. This lock is not hooked to the mother-ship and that is not why I wanted it but it serves a very real need for me. If you are someone who lives alone or has health issues the lock provides you with a way to allow others access in an emergency. There is also a flashing light on the interior unit that reminds you if the lock is not locked. It does not flash continuously but once every few minutes like a hardwired smoke detector does. The only thing I am concerned with was the keys feel like they are made of tin foil and if you turn them hard they will snap off. Hopefully I'll have the code and the keys won't matter.
Pros: Easy to Install, Easy to Use, Lots of Features
Thank You! A well made new technology Electronic Deadbolt door lock. Now I can monitor the door lock, (1-touch locking motorized deadbolt) open or close it from anywhere in the world thanks to the Z-Wave technology.
It is very easy to install, just need only a screwdriver if you are only just replacing another lock.
The lock is well built and heavy duty. All hardware is included. The instructions are easy to follow.
Since the deadbolt has no door lever to pull to close,, in the event you already do not have one already on your door, i recommend buying a matching Kwikset Halifax Square Iron Black Passage Hall/Closet Door Lever (Model # 154HFL SQT 514) for about $25 form home Depot.
Pros: Durable, Easy to Install, Easy to Use, Good Size & Weight, High Quality, Looks Great, Lots of Features, Nice Design, Sturdy, Stylish, z-wave technology
The Single Cylinder Electronic Deadbolt is an excellent product by Kwikset and has many great features. This product is a huge upgrade from old keyed deadbolts. This deadbolt is highly secure from tampering and gives several options from a standard key (is easily changed with smart rekey feature), manual entry codes, and codes added through a Smart Home System. This can work well in multifamily with a master key option. This electronic deadbolt easily replaces a standard deadbolt...it takes about 30 min to 1 hr. to install and get codes setup...with easy to follow instructions. It works with standard AA batteries which under standard use will last several years...a light indicates when these need to be changed. The manufacturer web site is a great source for information on this deadbolt. This is the future for entry locks.
