This is a vey inexpensive solution to a problem. I had replaced a ceiling fan in my bedroom with a new fan that works from a remote. The existing fan had separate wall toggle switches, one each for the fan and light. With the new remote fan, I only needed one of these switches so I removed one of them which left a void in the switch box on the wall. The blank insert mounts into the box with the provided screws and fills the void. It has screw holes to mount the cover plate with. There were only two minor issues; the thickness of the plastic wing part that screws into the box is thicker than the metal wing on a regualar switch and this keeps the plate cover from going completely flat against the wall but it is not that noticeable. The other minor issue is that the screw hole that receives the plate cover is plastic and there was some difficulty installing the screw. Neither of these were a big deal so I would recommend this for filling in the blank when a switch is removed.

The blank insert for a toggle switch by Leviton does exactly what is supposed to do. I had a toggle switch in our living room that was no longer being used. I removed the switch and it left the space in the face plate. I was unable to find a face plate for dual switches that was blank on one side. Solution = toggle switch insert. Super easy to install if you can use a screwdriver.

I needed this because I had installed a new bathroom fan that had a combined fan and light control in one switch space thus leaving the second switch in the wall unused. I thought this would be a 3 or 4 minute installation but it turned in a 15 minute job as I fiddled around adjusting the fan/light control and this blank plate in order for the cover plate to install correctly. The screw holes on this blank plate are quite tight, which keeps the screws from falling out but it results in no vertical adjustment and difficult horizontal adjustment. In the end, the product achieved the hoped for results by fairly neatly filling the space in the cover plate but a minor redesign might make this easier to align. If this had been a 4-gang box with three switches and this insert plate then the alignment might have been even a bit more difficult. I also don't quite understand why this costs as much as a 15 amp toggle switch it replaces. Maybe it's a volume issue.

Occasionally during a remodel, it turns out that you no longer need a switch where a switch used to be. If the switch was in a 2-gang box, you would need to replace the box with a single-gang box. If the box was already a single-gang box, you would need to eliminate the box, to do the job right. However, if the power feeds through the single-gang box to another electrical box, you cannot eliminate the box without doing some serious re-wiring. Sometimes eliminating or changing a box is impractical and/or not worth the effort/cost involved. An easier (and often satisfactory) solution is to install a switch insert where the switch used to be (see Photo 1). Then you just have a plastic blank showing instead of an inoperable switch. Recently I had just the situation in my garage. I eliminated a switch in a 2-gange box and could not change the box without major work. Temporarily, I just put electrical tape on the back of the plate to block the hole (to keep dirt out of the box—see Photo 2). I finally got this switch insert to finish the job—you just mount it like you would a regular toggle switch. It fits the plate nicely and gives a finished look to the wall plate (see Photo 3). There have been reports that the insert fits loosely in the plate, so I used a caliper to measure the insert and compared it to a regular switch. The part of the insert that shows through the plate is the same size as the lip around the toggle of a Leviton switch. So the insert fits as loosely as the switch fits, which means there is a very small gap all the way around. I’m sure this is designed this way to make it easy to fit the plate. This gap doesn’t bother me, but maybe bothers some other users. I didn’t take any stars off for this. Note that while this blank insert (molded as a single piece of plastic) costs about $2.00, a standard toggle switch (it has a metal frame and plastic body, brass screws, and who knows what else inside, and the whole thing must be assembled) costs only 69 cents. I can only think that the price difference has to do with volume of sales—they must sell way more switches than they do inserts, so the cost to make inserts is much higher. I didn’t take any value stars off for this, but though it was interesting enough to point out. Bottom line: This insert worked perfectly for me and I recommend it.

The previous homeowner in my newly purchased house installed a three gang junction box in the living room when there were only two connected switches.  I can only assume it was a mistake, as there was a dummy switch that did nothing.  It really aggravated me and I did consider ripping the wall apart to reinstall a two gang box.  However, my wife told me I'm not allowed to do that because I can only assume she believes I will get carried away with demolition and she doesn't want me to have any fun.  This product let me wife get her way, it worked perfectly to remove the false switch and keep the three gang box in place. I am a big fan of the Leviton brand and this product is no exception.  It's affordable, easy to install, and convenient.  For me, these three attributes warrant a 5 star review.  I'm afraid I can't agree with the reviewer who knocked this product based on ordering the wrong color.  It's a blank insert available in almond and white--both of which are available at my home depot.  I purchased white to match my switches and cover plates.  It matches perfectly and looks well.

I like the product but it was the secondary Leviton product that I wanted. It worked out well in the end.

For crying out loud it’s a cheap light switch. It works. Hopefully for a long time.

I was doing some rewiring in an old house and wound up with 2 switches in a 3-gang box. This (along wiht a 3-switch plate) will make it look a little less janky. Too bad it costs 3x what an actual switch would.
