If the handle is loose, the adapter or handle set screw are not fully secure; due to the Loctite applied the screw may feel tight before it is. We are sorry to hear of the issues you had with the installation of your new Moen Adler 2-Handle 1-Spray Tub and Shower Faucet in Chrome (Valve Included). The handles have a “H” or “C” stamped inside each handle for hot or cold. Thread the screws into the handles, then push each handle onto the adapter and hold securely while tightening the screw.

Handle Alignment Correction
Water to the valve does not need to be turned off for this adjustment.
1. Rotate each handle to the off position.
2. Remove the handle cap.
3. Remove the handle screw and handle (noting the direction the lever is point)
4. Disengage the handle adapter, replace the handle without screw and rotate to desired position.
5. Push handles back in and reinstall screw and handle cap

Handle Rotation Correction
Water to the valve must be turned off for this adjustment
1. Remove handle cap, screw, and handle.
2. Remove brass cartridge nut and handle adapter.
3. Remove shorter part of handle extension, rotate 180 degrees and reinstall.
4. Reinstall all parts in reverse order.

We are sorry to hear that after installing the Moen Adler Standard two-handle tub/shower you have had a difficulty with using/aligning the handles. What you have described is a condition referred to as “stacking”. This condition can best be described as the water leaving the tub spout is not able to get out of the spout fast enough that the water begins to back-up behind the wall. The only place for the water to back-up, is up the shower pipe and out the showerhead.
