An adequate blower/vacuum system with some limitations
I bought this hoping it would perform comparable to a corded Toro Electric Leaf Blower and Vacuum. I read the reviews that consistently mentioned battery life was short, so I knew that going in and expected that limitation compared to my corded Toro. The one striking disappointment is in the vacuum power; its not very strong. I filled about 2 1/2 of the larger paper yard bags with large and small dried leaves. There were a lot of small twigs mixed in and the majority of them were also picked up, but on several occasions, some of them jammed the impeller and the safety override stopped the machine (which is good). Clearing was straightforward, although the use of the hex key to remove the attachment was annoying. I could also see the hex screw becoming stripped given the number of times I had to clear it. Compared to the vacuuming power of the corded Toro, the battery powered Makita is inferior. Batteries do drain quickly as other users have mentioned but having 2 other sets (the machine uses 2 at a time) made this a minor issue. I also used it as a leaf blower and found it to be adequate for that purpose. Batteries drained almost as quick in blower mode, especially if using it at full power. The bag collection system for the vacuum mode is a little cumbersome to carry around when vacuuming, but this seems to be a common issue with any of these types of tools (the Toro is just as cumbersome). Emptying the bag was easy and convenient. I did notice that the machine doesn't really grind up the leaves like the Toro does, so it really does vacuum more than mulches the leaves. Overall, I'm ok with this product as it will function for my limited needs of this capability. I probably only use this type of equipment 1 or 2 times per year anyway and elimination of the heavy electric cord makes it worthwhile. You will definitely need at least 1 additional set of batteries and I would recommend 2. Makita and Home Depot were offering a deal when I purchased mine that provided an extra set of batteries. I already had some for other Makita tools, so that came in handy when I finally vacuumed all the Oak leaves that had fallen over the winter. One last feature is the trigger lock system. It is very nice and much easier to use than on other blowers I've used.

So far So good! Used it a few times, its more bulky than a one battery little 5.5" saw but! Man it has some power. It is also very accurate in that the blade actually cuts on the zero mark of the fence. Very High quality saw.

These batteries offer a perfect balance between, weight, performance and durability. I still use 3.0Ah batters I've had for nearly 10 years. These 5.0Ah batteries weigh about 1lb 6.4oz, where my 3.0Ah batters weigh about 1lb 6.5oz and my 4Ah batteries come in at 1lb 5.7oz. So for about the same weight these batteries off a significantly longer runtime.
