I bought this fan about 2 years ago and installed it back in winter in 2016. It was too hot i the attic to do it in summer.
When me and my wife moved into our new house, I put the remote thermostat in the attic. The house was newly built, and had attic insulation "blown" in. It was really good at holding in heat during winter and keeping the attic somewhat cool. The house we were renting was old, had worn down and flattened "Pink Panther" insulation. It was horrible. Our electric bills were about $200 a month during summer when we lived there. I put in a gable mounted fan, and it dropped our bills down to about $125-150, so a significant drop in costs.
Having seen for herself the benefits of a attic fan, she allowed me to cut a hole in our new home to install this one. Even though the house was new, and had great insulation, this fan still helped to keep the heat to a minimum. I spray painted the aluminum cover with a galvanizing spray, then with Rustoleum brown, to match the house color.
During summer, we keep the AC set at 75 when were gone (we both work), and drop it to 72 when we get home. After 10pm, we drop it to 69, because we sleep better when its cold. We use Green Mountain Energy as our provider, and they give us a decent rate.
Our Electric bills are as follows:
March: $68.74
April: $79.07
May: $123.76
Projected Cost For June (AS of this writing. I still have 2 weeks to go) $143.50
I anticipate a higher bill for June, as my wife took a week off from work and stayed home during the week. I'm sure it would have been lower had she gone to work.
I also did an experiment last week. I shut off the fan from the power source for 2 days, so i could record the temps in the attic. I've also included 2 pictures of the before and after.
The BEFORE (shutting off the fan) picture shows the highest temp in 48 hours was 135 degrees.
The AFTER (turning the fan back on) picture shows that the highest temp in the attic was 101 degrees.
Also, when the AC runs, since it doesn't have to overcome such a high temp in the attic, the house cools down significantly faster, which means less cycling of the outside unit, which means less energy used.
As far as i'm concerned, this is a MUST HAVE for anyone in the Houston and surrounding areas. The cost of savings far outweigh the cost of installing this fan.
