Feeder seems like effective squirrel deterrent in concept, but build quality is an impediment.
I hung from an 8 foot high tree limb and it fed birds well for a couple weeks while denying squirrels access. They ate from the ground as seed fell, which is fine by me. Persistent and clever as they are known to be, the squirrels eventually realized that if they can't get to the food inside the the hanging feeder, they'll work on relocating the feeder itself. They gnawed through the 3 heavy duty plastic zip ties I used to fasten the hanger to the branch, and the feeder fell about 6 feet to the ground. On impact, it cracked one of the two plastic perches as well as the plastic port shield behind the thin metal layer, which also bent. This rendered the weight-activated port protection ineffective on that side.
I removed the whole assembly, leaving only the stubby spring-loaded perch support and an open port on one side, with the other side perch and mechanism intact. I hung the feeder again with a braided steel cable and figured there's no place for a squirrel to grasp the feeder and access the open port. I was wrong. The next day I discovered a squirrel upside down hanging onto the functional perch by its tail (effectively closing off the port on that side) and hugging the bottom of the feeder with its hind feet as it gripped the open side with front claws. It chewed off the weight activated stub that impeded access to the seed and feasted. Despite my mistake in fastening, I think the easily broken parts led to this becoming trash in just a few weeks.
I have replaced it with a Brome product that seems more sturdy, has several additional perches and is higher capacity while being easier to refill from hanging position. It cost more but appears to be a better value.
I ordered this bird feeder thinking I was going to get this dark green color. When I opened the box, instead I received a hideous lime green bird feeder with a leaf design. So far the birds want nothing to do with it. In quarantine right now, it makes it difficult to return. I am very unhappy with this purchase.
This Metal Pest-Off Squirrel-Proof Mixed Seed and Sunflower Bird Feeder is a quality product that does what it's suppose to do. Squirrels are prevented from seed portal access by a spring-loaded trap door that is activated by the weight of the squirrel. Birds can feed freely, though. The squirrel top and bottom baffles are made of metal and I would suggest spraying them with a clear lacquer to prevent eventual oxidation. The paint job on them is very good, though, so it's not critical to coat. The seed capacity is generous so you won't be re-filling often. Easy fill/Clean. Customer service was awesome and quickly responded to my email. They are not just good, but great!
Pros: Durable, Easy to Clean, Easy to Install, Easy to Use, Good Size & Weight, High Quality, Looks Great, Lots of Features, Nice Design, Sturdy, Stylish
Finally, a feeder that has proven to be Squirrel Proof. I was having to fill my other "squirrel-proof" feeders daily because of the squirrels who would hang upside down and empty the feeders. Much to my delight, THIS FEEDER REALLY IS SQUIRREL PROOF.
The only negative is the narrow seed tube reservoir. I sure wish they made it a little bit larger so we could refill it less frequently. The Birds love it, and although only two birds can feed at a time, the squirrels don't even bother to try anymore. This one really works!
Blue jays and crows have always "bullied" the smaller birds in the feeders in my yard. This bird feeder does an excellent job keeping them away because they are too heavy to perch on the feeder. It actually is a win win for both large and small birds alike. Any birdseed that falls from the feeder goes onto the ground that the bigger birds eat. The smaller birds are happy not to be chased away and larger birds are happy to eat from the ground! Would recommend to all bird enthusiasts!
Had this out 3 weeks now. Really nice feeder. Built well and thwarts the squirrels
completely. Holds enough seed and so easy to fill, much easier to fill than any
previous weight activated feeder I have owned. I love the skirt above the seed ports
that keeps the seed dry. Also no springs to have to fiddle with to make it work!
I have sunflower hearts in mine and the birds love it.
Very pleased and saving a lot on birdseed too as squirrels given up, so pays for itself!
