Our non-skid backing can have a smell from the latex used in the manufacturing process. This smell is inherent to the product and originates from rubber trees. Mohawk Home manufactures and sources products from various vendors to provide our customers with the best quality and value possible, you may see a variation of up to 3% of the published dimensions for your rug (this is typically a difference of 1-2 inches on smaller rugs and up to 3 inches on larger rugs, in either or both directions). This smell is inherent to the product and is considered part of the normal process and will typically dissipate over a couple days. Recently, we have received numerous complaints across all our selling channels that the odor is more than what we would normally expect. We are taking the complaints seriously and are pursuing several initiatives to determine the root cause of this stronger smell. Based on the information we have to date; we believe the odor is most likely contaminated dye that is added to the latex for the color. This was identified several months back by our vendor, and the dye was returned. It’s possible we have some older inventory that was not disposed of that could have been part of this isolated event. Our quality team is in the process of checking all inventory 3 months or older for the offensive odor and ensure these items are pulled from our shippable inventory. Our rug pad is also sold through our commercial group to schools and office buildings that require Green Label Plus certification from the CRI Carpet and Rug Institute. We complete annual VOC testing to maintain this certification.

Hi Ann, thank you for your feedback. We do suggest rug pads be trimmed to be 2 inches from the perimeter of your rug for maximum efficiency to keep your area rug in place.
