Skill and patience required
You want the surface of the plate to be flush with the back of the item you are hanging, so you need a chisel (or at least a sharp knife) and a drill bit to inset the keyhole plate. If the item you are hanging is less than an inch thick, pick up some shorter flathead screws to replace the ones in the kit. The wall (key) screw can be any sort of screw whose head is small enough to fit in the round hole and big enough to stay in the slot. Many drywall anchors are suitable. (The HD online item photo here shows the slot upside down, by the way.) That said, this is a nearly perfect hanging method capable of a lot of weight and no gap between the hanging item and the wall.
We had 3 short bookshelves built for a client to hang in their condo here in Hawaii, out of the beautiful Koa Wood. Didn't want to have exposed hardware, so we counter sank these hangers into the back of the shelves and put moly screws into the wall and hung from the screws. Perfect installation and really enhanced the product. Nice to have in stock at the local store, as well!
Pros: Durable, Sturdy, Easy to Install, Stylish, Good Size & Weight, Nice Design
