Galvanized steel hanger strap has been a mainstay in my workshop for decades. The only trouble with steel is RUST. Usually the locations are tight and difficult to access so long term use is essential. One other issue with the steel is the extremely sharp edges when you cut it with metal snips.
Oatey, a company that makes some excellent longer ties that I have used for years, now makes what appears to be strong, long-lasting hanger strap made from polymers.
I certainly favor the plastic over the steel for the aforestated reasons.
I got a chance to check out the Oatey plastic hanger strap.
I’ve used the galvanized metal strap for years – not only for hanging pipes but for creating a “loop” and screwing it into studding in pairs for supporting bungee cords that secure rakes, brooms, etc. from falling off of the garage wall, for (in emergencies) rehanging auto exhaust pipes, for helping to secure garden border 2x4’s – lots of uses.
The plastic version doesn’t offer the same size holes as the galvanized (see photo).
In addition, there are temperature limitations for using the plastic version (above 32 degrees F., below 120 degrees F.).
It has a weight limit of 20 pounds.
Why then use the plastic?
It’s a lot lighter than the galvanized.
It’s easier to cut – the plastic can be cut with scissors.
It’s not as likely to cut your hands.
It’s easier to form a loop without creasing.
The entire 10’ roll will fit in a pocket or toolbelt without fear of damaging your work clothes or toolbelt.
I’m adding the Oatey plastic strap to my supply box – while not good for outdoor use in Michigan winters, for indoor use I think it will be easier and faster to deploy than the metal strapping. It’s not a full substitute for metal – but for some applications should work better.
Pros: cuts wit scissors, no metal edges, pocketabl
I received my Oatey 3/4 in. x 10 foot plastic hanger strap today, this plastic strap is good for hanging pipes from rafters or securing pipe in between joists.
I also have used this plastic strap for support on vent pipes, it is very flexible and has nail holes punched in it. I have used the strap for various repairs and for securing cat 6 - cable when installing my security camera system. This hanger strap is a inexpensive way to do repairs.
Pros: Easy to Install, Good Instructions, inexpensive
This is one of those items that you appreciate having on hand for that project that needs this type of hanger strap. I have a few pipes that need a little more support and this will do the trick.
I have always used the metal type, but I am so glad I tried the plastic. It is easy to work with and is just as strong as metal, but it is not recommended for use below 32 degrees or above 120 degrees. The holes are 3/4" apart, center to center and will support weight up to 20 lbs.
OATEY Plastic Hanger Strap has some advantages over perforated metal hanger strapping. It is easier to work with and will not cause any reaction with metals and is light weight. It also has some limitations. It is not a direct replacement for metal hanger strapping as you can not use it under 32°F or over 120°F. It also has a 20 lbs max load. See photo Oatey.
I use this plastic hanger strap all the time. Normally I buy it in the large roll and keep it on my truck all the time. I prefer this to the old fashioned metal strap. The plastic strap won't rust away with moisture. I use this to hang plumbing pipes mainly, but use it for anything else that needs to be strapped up. Generally speaking I use regular drywall screws to mount the strap.
