As quickly as birds are drawn to this new feeder, so are squirrels. The squirrels have not been able to get to the seeds so far. This feeder represents value for dollars spent. Similar squirrel-resistant feeders cost as much as four times the amount this feeder cost.

I must have brilliant squirrels
So at first this product worked well and I laughed as the squirrels fell off looking discouraged. However the jokes on me. The squirrels have been steadily emptying this feeder by doing exactly what the product says it prevents. Hanging on the side of the “cage”. The problem is the cage is not preventing them from getting so much seed out that other squirrels are eating excess seeds at the base while the hanging squirrel is robbing the feeder. Haven’t had any problems with my other feeder….

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with this feeder! It sounds like there may be a failure in the mechanism if the cage isn't closing off the feeding ports. Please contact us directly at 855-737-5973 for assistance with our 1-year replacement policy.

Breaks easily
I bought 3 of these to prevent squirrels from the seed. One the bottom seed deflector came off so all the seed pours out. The second one as I disassembled it to clean it the retention tab broke off. Now the bottom won’t stay on.

squirrel feeder
Have not seen a bird on it for first week but squirrels love it.

Response from Woodstream TeamJun 30, 2023
Thank you for sharing this feedback. We're sorry to hear about this recent experience. Birds are creatures of habit and can take some time to become accustomed to a new feeder in their environment. We offer feeders with varying degrees of squirrel resistance. Baffles can be used above or below feeders not considered “squirrel resistant”. In addition, keep in mind squirrels can JUMP! Ideal placement would be at least 12 feet away from any type of launch pad (tree, fence…) and at least 4 feet off the ground. Reach out to us at 1-855-737-5973 with any questions.

Rodent-proof for 5 minutes then it rains seeds
Everything was fine for a month or so. Then one day it took an athletic chipmunk about five minutes to climb our tall skinny metal mounting pole, chew a hole through the flimsy plastic, and unleash a hailstorm of seeds which quickly emptied 80% of the feeder.
Fastest $50 we ever wasted.
PS: The "tip" to mount the unit far out of reach of any rodents is (a) impossible given that they can climb pretty much any mounting hardware, and (b) an admission that the device is not rodent-resistant as advertised. Better to buy a cheaper unit and spend the savings on extra seed.

Attracts Mice and Rats
The house finches love the this bird feeder. They come every day, eat and make lots of noise and spread seed all over the ground. It's fun to watch. However, at night the mice and rats come. I am pretty grossed out. They climb inside of it and eat and poop everywhere. I am disappointed that we need to get rid of it. There are too many negative problems with the amount of rodents it attracts to keep it.

We are sorry to hear that is occurring. The feeder is not designed to be rodent resistant, however we have shared your feedback with the Product Manager.

Design has changed
Warning this is not what the item is. We bought one last fall and wanted to add a second. The company has changed the design first off the pirches arent secure. Theyre thin metal rods that are just hooked on the cage so they move. Second the pirches are considerably lower so might be hard for small birds to sit on pirch and reach opening. Third problem the outer cage is larger so its not sturdy Will rattle in wind. I returned and will look for something else. Overall quality not as good

Save your money
Within one day of putting this feeder out, squirrels got the top off and were inside it. Also stretched out the springs, breaking one off and have started chewing away at the top of the feeder. Save your money, look elsewhere. Unfortunately I did not save my receipt.

Birds won't eat from it
I really wish I had been more careful when taking out of the factory packaging so I could have returned this . It is a bird feeder so I did not even think of a problem . I replaced a round version that is similar to this one and it worked great for 4 years . Birds would empty the food from it in 3 days . Using feed from the same bag they will not touch this .There has to be something they do not like about the feed ports . It seems it is difficult to get their little beeks in there far enough .

great bird feeder
I just recently purchased my second of these bird feeders - only because my previous one was getting old and cloudy looking. This is my favorite feeder of all time. It is quite attractive and the spring action is a very clever way to keep out the squirrels. I have no problems with them getting into the feeder. But they do gather on the ground under the feeder to eat up the leftovers from the birds. It keeps everyone happy!

Keeps squirrels out!
Like most people who feed the birds, I hate seeing a day's worth of bird food gone in ten minutes due to the fluffy-tailed tree rats! In all honesty, I throw seeds on the ground for the squirrels, but I like to have some available all day for the birds. This feeder works like a charm - the squirrels have simply quit paying attention to it because they cannot get any food from it. The grackles, which can eat a lot of food, have discovered that one grackle t a time can feed here, but if a second one lands on it, the baffle slides down, blocking access to the seeds. So, when a grackle is feeding here, they protest aggressively when a second one tries to land! The blue jays have left it alone. I have a larger sunflower seed feeder for the cardinals, blue jays, and grackles. This feeder is for the smaller birds. I back up to a preserve and during the winter have three pairs of painted buntings that come to this feeder, so I like to keep it stocked for them.

Do not buy this feeder
A finches head got stuck in this feeder. It was extremely traumatic. It doesn’t detach easily I had to break it to get it open. Photo is where finches head was stuck.

Great bid feeder
I bought one of these several years ago after losing two other bird feeders to the squirrels. This model was very effective against the squirrels and for a lot less $$ than the one at a major competitor's store. After 3 years of the elements, the plastic part dried out and cracked so I went and purchased another one just like it. The second one was so enjoyable that I bought a third one to bring even more birds to the yard. Now, my yard has become a bird haven. I enjoy watching all the animals get a belly full.

Good, but not squirrel-proof
This is my first feeder. The birds love it! It is so much fun to watch them. On the third day after I put it up, a squirrel got brave enough to latch on and stayed until he figured out how to hang on without closing the ports. He even knocked a piece of metal off. I don't know how much of a problem this will be. If it is only occasionally that would be okay. I just don't want squirrels eating most of the seed.

Not squirrel proof
This is a nice bird-feeder, but definitely not squirrel proof. The squirrels are able to hang on the feeder and use their paws on the bottom ledge to push up on the spring and access the seed. :(

Fastest squirrel feeder on the market
I'm sitting here watching squirrel after squirrel eating from this feeder. I have two other feeders and got this in the hopes of having one feeder that wouldn't be empty for the birds.
What this has accomplished is the squirrels eat exclusively out of this one. There are five squirrels I've named at this point. One has mild difficulty but this was a squirrel buffet within two hours of install.
They seem to have three methods of defeating it but really I'm not joking they exclusively eat here until it's empty then go to the non squirrel proof feeders.

Buy this if you want a squirrel feeder
I haven't seen one bird on this feeder but it attracts the heck out of the local squirrel population. Extremely disappointed since its sold as a "Squirrel-Be-Gone Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder". None if the settings work and birds do not like it.

Squirrels 1, Feeder 0
Squirrels bent open the metal leaves meant to cover the openings when weighted by the squirrel. They got smarter and figured out how to hang on without activating the squirrel defense. Now I have fat squirrels and distraught birds. My last line of defense: bank on the window. When the squirrels aren't around, the birds love the feeder. Buy this and pay the squirrel tax.

This feeder should be off the market! Bird caught in feeder!
I went to fill up this feeder and found a finch with its head stuck in it! Luckily my husband was home and was able to cut the wire and plastic tube. I threw it in the garbage!!! Hopefully they pass this review to save the birds!

Needs some small modifications to work. 1 zip-tie, 2 screws
Assembly from factory seems to be snap together, needs a few modifications if you have fat squirrels like we do.
Fail 1; They managed to pop the small post holding the lid/hanging wire to the rest of the feeder, dropping the feeder to the ground. A zip-tie through the pre-drilled holes and around the lid have secured that part. Though you need to cur/replace the zip-tie for refill it now.
Fail 2; Our chunky squirrels managed enough downward force on the cage to pop the bottom cap out (it is held with 4 small tabs through the plastic). Adding 2 small self tapping screws through the plastic&metal cap on opposite sides have secured this piece.
When they aren't breaking the entire feeder the sliding cage does great a keeping their grubby little mitts off the seed.

Not Squirrel Proof At All
The squirrels within a few days were able to climb on the feeder and cause the springs to release and crash it to the ground. After redoing the springs and hanging it back up the squirrels realized that the base of the feeder is a perch for them to stand on and will not cause the feeder to close the holes. They ate the plastic around the feeding holes and wrecked it. See photos of holes below.
