Solid power. Great battery life(45 mins of moderate to hard cutting). Well balanced in your hands. Smooth operation with minimal vibration. I have a large yard and this trimmer has plenty of battery on one charge to trim it all. After my first time doing my entire yard I had to run the trimmer an extra 15mins to finish off the battery completely for the first charge. The power is not quite equal to a gas trimmer but the torque is plenty strong. The head speed is slower than a gas trimmer which makes the cutting a little bit slower, but the torque will cut almost anything a gas string trimmer will, just at a little bit slower rate. This slower cutting may add 2-5min to a total yard trim so it's pretty inconsequential. That said I think this is an amazing tool for the money that does a great job and is well thought out. I'm very happy with the purchase and the added ease of use, not needing to keep mixed gas or smell like exhaust when I'm done.

This is a nice trimmer with a lot of power (I was moving through blackberries with no problem). It's highly rated in CR (why I bought it) and met my expectations. Run-time was good for me. I'd rate it higher if I could adjust the position of the handle to get it better balanced (I'm not tall or particularly strong). I bought a second unit to have a spare battery because the price difference between the full unit and the battery is minimal. I may not need the 2nd battery in retrospect, but that 2nd unit comes in handy when other people are helping the job. The unit can be disassembled/assembled very quickly, so storage is easy, and it can be tossed into a car in two smaller pieces. It comes with a string winder, which should make replacing string easier- though I have not had to use it yet.

Today was the first time I used my trimmer. I needed something with more power to trim my acre yard. It started out forcefully but then it shut off. I waited a few minutes and tried again. It shut off. I wondered if the battery needed charged again (and I was hoping not, because I hadn't gone very far) but it still showed a full charge. I let it cool for a bit and got a little more weeding done, but it keeps shutting off. I am not giving up yet, but wonder what is going on. I like the weight of the product and seems like it will be easy to maintain. I like that you can add attachments to it, but probably won't be something I will do. Like I said - I am not giving up yet.

Just received my new Ryobi 40V string trimmer. It works like a champ! I have some serious weed problems and this unit performed really well. I've had gas trimmers before but this one outperforms them all. It's well balanced, easy to operate, and the best part is that there is no gas mixing to make it go. Good job Ryobi!!!

Great unit, worked amazing and it's not as heavy as my gas weed eater. Wish they would have a head that you could direct feed line versus the bump head type.

I have 10 Ryobi cordless tools. I have been using the cordless string trimmer/along with several attachments. This unit works great, however the 40 volt battery fails and it seems like right at the date it was to expire. On one occasion after purchasing my fourth 40 volt battery, I wrote down the date of purchase. I explained to the person at Ryobi the battery might show it expired but the date I purchased did not exceed the warranty. I am not happy with Ryobi as far as their 40 volt batteries and wished I had purchased a different brand of trimmer. Oh, by the way, I'm sure you are aware that the batteries are over $100.00 to purchase.

  • July 10, 2018

I've been impressed with the capability of the 40V power head; it doesn't give up much to the 2-stroke head I've had. My yard is fairly large, and the string trimmer has to deal with St. Augustinegrass, which is very tough stuff. The Expand-It capability was one feature that sold me - I've used the system for years, so now I have the whole set with battery power! I haven't used the trimmer head that comes with the unit - I instead use the older head that I have loaded with some sexy .90 string that lasts longer against the grass.I've used the hedge trimmer attachment, and it is superior to the gas head in handling and portability.I bought the leaf blower for the battery to use as a back-up, and discovered after I got it home that it was 'bigger' than the trimmer battery. My only suggestion is that Ryobi should package the trimmer with the same battery that comes with the leaf blower - a 3.0AH unit. The 2.6AH doesn't quite make it for my whole yard if I get behind and let it get too 'wooly'.

The items arrived within 3 days. Very easy to install. Used it twice so far and no issues. Battery takes about less than an hour to charge. No more gas and trying to start time. You just click and go. I used the battery until one bar left. Trimming and Edging for 20 minutes and it accepts my previous gas trimmer parts. Very happy with my first Ryobi purchase. Let's hope no issues with the battery. I will try to keep the battery on 2 bars charged during storage period. I store the batteries in a strong sealed storage tool box inside a safe place. Did not want to keep the batteries in a hot garage that can degrade the battery life and could cause fire. I also purchased the electronic blower that came with extra battery. So, no issues with low battery for my average yard.

Overall, I really like the product since I do not have to bother with gas and oil and hard starting and all that. The action of the head is excellent as it does the trimming efficiently without any problems. I just bought it and used it once and thought that the actual use time is short compared to the charge time. This interrupts my work schedule to recharge the unit. I am an average sized man but thought that the trimmer is a little heavy with the battery installed than most trimmers. I ended up with a slight sore shoulder. Also, it is a slight bit difficult keeping the two handles closed to keep the trimmer operating. At times, you have to let go for a hand break. I guess I could say that it meets my expectations but I wish it had a longer use time after charging and it was a little lighter. Finally, the bump-feed mechanism did not always work for me. However, I still had enough string out to do the job. The biggest thing is that I hate to stop my work for that long charge.
