Cheap metal blade
I purchased 4 of these shovels in March 2022, after using them on only 3 projects the blades on all 4 shovels began to bend and curl. I bent one shovel blade to nearly a right angle while trying to cut through a root. We have 4 older razorbacks, purchased in 2017/2018 that are still working great! Newer shovels are clearly a poorer quality metal. Handle has also changed for a solid piece of wood to two pieces glued together, manufacturer is clearly cutting corners and costing quality.

    Can not get it warrantied
We are having issues with the quality of these shovels and a lot of other products of theirs not being able to be warrantied. As you can see in the picture, the tips of the shovels split. I think a shovel should last longer than 6 months.

        I like this shovel
If a shovel's handle is going to break, it will break where the wood meets the metal. What I noticed with this shovel is that the metal rises much higher up the wooden handle than my old shovel. (see picture). The angle of the shovel will also give you more leverage when digging up dirt or tree stumps. The extra wide "power step" will be easier on your feet when stepping (or jumping) on the shovel.

After breaking the handle of my old shovel, I found myself in need of a new one. This one seemed like it would not have broken as easily as my old one and I was right. The handle seems larger than most other shovel handles I have used. I like the rubber grip at the end. I also like the metal part of the shovel that extends up the wood handle (at least a foot). This helps keep the handle from breaking so easily. Overall, I’m happy with this shovel as it is designed to hold up to heavy use and so far, it has.

          Decent shovel, but lacking warranty
This shovel lasted a couple years of home use. It recently failed while transplanting plants. The metal head fatigued and tore while leveraging the shovel. The handle is rigid the head should be a stronger metal. Home Depot doesn’t honor the warranty, now I’m without a shovel while chasing the manufacturer’s lifetime warranty.

            Razor-Back PowerEdge 48
I bought this shovel after doing some research on quality shovels. All the reviews seemed positive, so i thought i was would try RazorBack as well. I was looking for a tough shovel to dig out 4x4s that the previous home owner tried to bury in the yard. The shovel snapped during this moderate work. It seems like I was unlucky and bought a shovel with poor quality wood. It shouldn't have snapped as easy as it did. I tried contacting RazorBack and Ames, the parent company, for more information on the Lifetime Warranty. As of 5/22/20 there was no ability for home owners to contact via the phone, as the prerecorded message just refers you to an email address and then the call ends. I emailed both Ames and RazorBack but never heard anything from either. Luckily I was able to return the shovel back to Home Depot.

              It ripped
Bought this shovel around 12/2019. I use it to what a shovel shall be used for and that too only in household gardening and landscaping. Never used it on anything other than soil. Picture speaks a thousand words.

Broke during only the second use
I used this shovel to dig the soil to plant a tree in my yard. It broke during the second use at the connection with the handle. Have been trying to reach to the Home Depot customer care for a week via email and phone. Email not returned, phone wait times are extremely long.

This is a serious shovel! The shovel has heft, and an all business blade. Wood handle is secured to the blade with a super socket – meaning the steel blade extends high and the wood handle inserts into it a longer distance than most standard shovels providing a strong head to handle connection. The blade is pointed and sharpened to cut into the ground better than most. Blade has a “power edge”, and in testing the shovel it does indeed cut into the ground and grass easier than most standard blade shovels. It has enough mass and is sharp enough to slice through most smaller roots. I really like the wide foot pegs at the top of the blade. They provide greater gripping and increased surface area so you can apply greater force with your foot with far less fatigue from a standard edge. The top of the handle has a nice red rubber grip – with some cushion but firm enough to last a long time. Excellent all purpose digging shovel.

Long length shovel with nice foot ledge. We are enjoying this shovel for our gardening chores as the longer length makes a huge difference when doing transplanting. My husband is 6 ' 4 " and this is the one he grabs every time to use in our garden. The round point is sharp and the nice foot ledge helps with keeping the shovel balanced when digging. I especially like the soft red padded grip with plenty of grip length for a variety of hand positions when digging or working with transplants. I like the look and feel of this shovel, without it being super heavy or awkward to use. It weighs under 10 pounds which makes it very easy to move around and use in the garden. Every gardener needs a nice shovel like this one for everyday gardening chores.

I really to like this PowerEdge 49 in. Fiberglass Handle Super Socket Digging Shovel by Razor-Back. It has a very sturdy feel to it. You just know by the feel that it is a very strong heavy duty shovel. The fiberglass handle is so much stronger than the wooden handle type. And with the extended socket really adds so very much more strength to help prying those stubborn rocks out of your way. The extended socket is about three times as long than a standard shovel. The shovel has what the manufacturer calls a "Power Step" (see attached photo) which gives you a much firmer step to get into that hard ground.

I got this long-handled shovel for some upcoming outdoor projects which I've just started. Bottom Line: It is vastly superior to any other long-handled shovel I have ever used (and I've used many). It is a very sturdy tool for garden, beach or medium-duty construction, and it appears to be well fabricated of steel and solid wood materials. The upper portion of the handle is coated with a rubberized material that makes it easier to grip, especially if wet (see picture). The blade and socket are a single 26” metal section that is secured to the wood shaft of the shovel with metal rivets (see picture). The wood shaft follows the curve of the metal socket under a portion of the shovel bed to provide additional support – nice design quality! Seldom do I see a shovel with such a long metal socket, but it inspires confidence that this shovel will survive a long period of rough use, especially if it is used extensively as leverage to pull out roots or heavy rocks (can't tell you how often I've broken a long-handle shovel at the base of the shaft connection). The only question is whether the rivets are a weak link here? Will they survive over time without rusting out? Perhaps a galvanized bolt/nut or other solid fastener would be a better choice to fasten these components? The shovel measures 59” from tip-to-tip, and weighs about 5-1/2 lbs. The weight of the shovel is quite noticeable as compared to others of similar size that I’ve used in the past, perhaps owing to the length of the extended metal socket and wood shaft. The wide shoulder at the top of the blade is a nice feature (see picture) and I was able to place my full weight on the shovel by stepping onto the shoulder. The shovel length was a big help, giving me good leverage for pulling sod/dirt from holes in the ground and as a fulcrum against the ground for breaking roots. The length also made it easier on my back to grab and lift the shovel without having to bend over as much, as far, or as often as I would with a shorter shovel. The cutting edge of the blade is relatively sharp (when new), and did a commendable job using modest foot pressure on the shoulder of the blade to pierce through some old tree roots. The blade has a conventional contour allowing it to carry a reasonable amount of dirt, etc. This is a nice, high-quality tool; however its tare weight can make it cumbersome to use after digging for a while. For labor intensive projects that involve moving LOOSE dirt, gravel, sand, etc. you might do better using a lighter weight shovel than this one. For heavy duty ground-breaking work, including breaching hard surfaces and snapping through small/medium roots this shovel is the one you want. A good, quality product – I would recommend it to a friend.

Digging in the garden can be quite a chore. While I like a good hardwood handle, I decided to give this shovel a try due to the advertised sharp blade. It turns out I like the fiberglass handle. While I could not vouch for the claim that this shovel requires only half as much pressure to penetrate, it is comfortable to dig with due to the foot holds and length of the handle. It is a good feeling knowing that this shovel was made in the USA.

The Home Depot and Razor-Back have a real step forward in this shovel ! The fiberglass handle is nice and stiff with very little flex in it. The blade is nice and thicker than most competitive products ! Also the enlarged steps on the top of the blade give a safe secure place to put your foot for digging ! The edge is also sharper than most. Padded top of handle makes the grip great ! This shovel will last a long time !! "MADE in THE U.S.A." is a big plus !!!!

A digging shovel designed for hard use and backed by a lifetime warranty. The blade is forged 14 gauge steel heat-treated for strength. Weight is 5 lbs—excessive for some home gardeners. The blade has a sharpened edge for improved ground penetration, helpful until the sharpness wears away with use. Perhaps by that time the user will have developed increased muscle mass to compensate. The step is extra wide with slip-resistant cleats—helpful for applying increased digging force. The socket is 15 inches long to strengthen the blade-handle connection and tempered to reduce brittleness—important for strength when prying. A slip-resistant PVC grip on the handle end provides improved control. Recommended for durability and good design. Made in USA.
