Great non expensive lump charcoal . Lights up easy in a bbq chimney with news paper. I have always used that lump charcoal that you can get just about anywhere. The bad thing about that, is that 90% of that bag is dust or fine pieces. Royal Oak is top quality, and you be happy with your purchase.

Normally use this stuff all the time in my ceramic grill. Typically wait till I'm almost out and then I buy three bags because you get a discount when you buy in bulk. The last three bags I bought have been terrible! They have been filled with a lot of rocks and now I just found some type of metal spike in the bag. Great deal when you buy in bulk but I'm tired of having to sift thru the bags.

Unfortunately this product did not meet my expectations. Of the five bags I have testing there was way too much fines, chunks of concrete and rocks for my taste. The biggest disappointment was how difficult it was to light, it took twice the time using a MAP torch which in turn cost money. I noticed a lack in good smoke as well. I BBQ every week and have found the Primo Brand or the Green Egg Brand a consistent product, with good smoke. Sorry, I am unable to recommend this product.

Royal Oak isn't necessarily my first choice, but I choose it over the "blue bag" any day. I've found it's more reliable for a grill session than for a smoking session - using this for smoking will work but you'll have to pay way more attention to the pit temperature than if you use a natural briquette product. For grilling at high temperatures, Royal Oak gets the job done nicely. It burns hotter and gives a great sear. The natural oak smells great and adds a subtle wood smoked flavor to your food It's also effective for two zone fires or indirect grilling. Just be ready to shovel in some fresh coals every 30-40 minutes if you're going for low and slow or else you'll risk losing your fire altogether.

By the far the best product for the money! This is the only lump charcoal I use and have been using it since I got my Big Green Egg 2.5 years ago. It burns great and even has a natural smokey flavor when you burn it. It is the same exact lump that has the Big Green Egg brand, just repackaged. But, the BGE brand is twice the price for the same product. I would highly recommend this lump to anyone looking to venture into the lump charcoal field.

I have 15 bags, so I didn't need another, but whenever it is for sale under $10.00, I will buy 1 or 2. they mostly sell for$13 to 14. I use half a bag at a time, but in my Bayou Kamodo grill, I can keep a Pork Butt in there for 10 to 12 hours at 225 degrees.

I will start by saying that I have ran more than a few bags thru my offset smoker with good results. I prefer Hardwood Lump over Briquettes due to the chemical binders used in producing Briquettes. While overall I am pleased with this product I have noticed some quality control issues. Finding small rocks in the bag is not uncommon and while pouring one bag into my fire box I heard a loud thud, which turned out to be a softball sized rock. Another bag contained a corner chunk of a pallet, nails and all. While some pallets are made out of Oak and other hardwoods I would have preferred no nails in the bag. The size variations of the chunks are not a huge issue for me, as a natural product will never be uniform in size and shape. You may have to hand arrange some chunks in your chimney starter though as some pieces can be rather large. All in all it's a good value for the money in my opinion averaging about $.85 a pound. Other hardwood lump charcoals run $1.00 to $1.50 a pound. In my opinion it burns longer and hotter than Briquettes and leaves far less ash in my firebox.

I won't burn anything else in my Kamado. And for those who buy Big-Green-Egg Lump save your money, because it is simply Royal Oak Re-Labeled for BGE.... I love the taste it produces and rarely find anything odd in the bags as reported by others. Hmmm... I need to restock!

          Excellent lump coals
Really good hardwood coals. Allows you to use less smoking woods as this is a mix of hardwoods which gives a nice smoke flavor. Burns very hot so it's good for searing or use less but more often for long smokes. With a chimney and 3 pieces of newspaper this lights like a dream. Prepare yourself for some inconsistencies as some bags are filled with all small pieces and other bags filled with beautiful thick sticks and chunks. Overall a amazing product but I do find myself using briquettes still due to great sales (2 big bags for $10)

            Lots of rocks.
The bag claims to be 100% wood. On my first batch from this bag there were 6 sizable lumps about the size of a golf ball that were concrete with rocks in them. That means this product that I used had around 20% rocks in it. Rocks weigh more than charcoal. I bought a mixture of rocks and charcoal. I will not buy from this brand again.

The Only Lump Charcoal I Use
I feel like I'm getting a ridiculously great deal every time I buy this huge 17.6 pound bag. Royal Oak Hardwood Lump Charcoal is always consistently good quality. The bag is full of nice size lumps not little pieces. I use Royal Oak when smoking meats. The lumps burn hot and long. Royal Oak Lump doesn't impart any harsh flavor to the meat (which my wife hates). I'll keep buying this as long as HD stocks it.

Quality charcoal & here are some tips
Here's how I use this in my Weber grill. For those complaining about small pieces falling through the charcoal grate, remedy that by adding a 2nd charcoal grate & install fireplace/woodstove insert bricks. Place the 2nd grate over your 1st to create a waffle pattern. The fireplace bricks tremendously help with making the fire burn more evenly, & prevents you from adding too much charcoal. I use a cheap colander to sift any small charcoal pieces from the ashes then dump those bits atop my charcoal. Doing this fills the gaps in your charcoal so it burns slower. To maximize cooking space, add a 2nd cooking grate upside down atop your existing grate. If you cook your food atop the 2nd grate, it'll smoke better. There, you just turned a Weber kettle into a smoker. This works very nicely & won't hurt your wallet. Enjoy!

A little goes a long way. Superior to my average stuff I buy. It puts out way more heat and burns very clean in comparison.

as long as the product is not 'handled' too much, the charcoal pieces will be adaquet for cooking. I have purchased some in the past where pieces were smaller due to handling
