Strong, reliable shelving solutionThese tracks are strong and, using the right screws for your needs, can be very reliable.
We’re using six of these tracks, along with a bunch of brackets, to give our media room plenty of storage and display space. Installation is pretty easy if you approach it methodically. I took many measurements to make sure I had even spacing between tracks, then installed each one starting with the top screw and the next screw two or three holes down, making sure each track was level before committing to the second screw. I would then use a yard-long level to ensure that I installed the next track at the same height as the previous ones. I also measured the space between each new track and the one next to it twice or thrice before installing the new one. This meticulousness paid off; all of our shelves are level, strong, and well supported.
I did not secure the tracks to the studs in the wall. I strongly recommend you do so if you’re planning on putting *a lot* of weight on your shelves. Since our use is relatively light, I went with the configuration that would give me the most shelf length whilst allowing me to use a stud for the TV mount in the middle of our shelving, since the TV is what would put the most weight in the smallest attachment area). I secured the tracks to the drywall with E-Z Ancor’s Drywall & Stud Anchors, which are versatile enough for both bare drywall and in case you hit a stud. While I found them easy to install, I can see how some people might not be comfortable without explicit instructions. Perhaps some videos on the Home Depot site or a take-home single-sheet of instructions placed somewhere near the display in the store would help increase people’s confidence in their ability to install these track systems.
We are very pleased with the final result. Combined with painted-then-cut 3/4" plywood at different depths, we’ve achieved a utilitarian, yet clean look that provides lots of storage for our media needs. We’re confident that any future changes to the configuration will be painless because of the modular design.
