I use this gloss lacquer all the time for finishing my woodturnings. It has always worked well. Many light coats help avoid runs and orange peel.

White Lacquer
I use white lacquer to paint the stars on the Texas Flag cornhole games I make. It's great.

Depends on...
I bought this to spray a light coat of finish on a guitar I had just sanded to bare wood to match the neck and it did. This lacquer darkened the body to a light amber, which you can see just how much in the pic. I will sand it off...and return the lacquer. Not sure if anything will not darken the wood, but this product definitely did.

Thank you for sharing your experience. To ensure the best finish with Rust-Oleum Specialty Lacquer Spray, we recommend applying two or more light coats a few minutes apart. Care should be taken to over apply the product.

The difference between this and Auto Lacquer
The auto lacquer appears to have a slower drying time and a UV protectant. The acrylic lacquer has MEK and MAK as additional solvents which are very powerful and dry more slowly than acetone. bis(1,2,2,6,6-Pentamethyl-4-Piperidinyl) Sebacate is most likely a UV protectant. These details are from a comparison of the safety date sheets (sds).

I refurbish vending machines and we use a lot of this product and also the appliance epoxy paint. I accidentally purchased the lacquer and started to spray only to realize it wasn’t spraying like it usually did and that it was lacquer. I always start with 1 quick coat holding the can back about 12” or more and then I let it tack for a few minutes and go over it with two full coats. Every customer we’ve painted these for has thought they were new machines.

          Paint is bad
When spraying with this black Lacquer on Large surfaces like doors, the paint seems to come out correct intermittently from the can, you get a smooth gloss finish, followed by a dry spray or not a glossy spray, which causes this blotches. At first i though i done something wrong, after seeing these reviews, i too can testify that this paint can doesn't finish large surfaces correctly. :( Realized this 6 cans later. Very frustrating. I used it on fan blades (small surface), it did fine.

Thank you for sharing your experience using our Rust-Oleum Specialty Lacquer Spray. Spray painting large, flat surfaces is especially challenging, and care must be taken to ensure an even finish. Take care to apply in a steady back and forth motion, starting off the surface, and completing the pass off the other side, taking care to ensure the nozzle is fully depressed and a constant distance from the surface being coated. Shaking thoroughly prior to and periodically during the application is also good practice to prevent inconsistency. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 2 Rustoleum

Should have listened to other reviews
First time working with this lacquer but I am very disappointed by the product. I prepped 2 chairs by sanding them and using tack cloth to clean them. I hung the chairs, shook the cans for about 3 minutes and went to spray the lacquer. It was flimsy and uneven. No big deal I thought, I would just do additional coats to even it out. I waited for it to dry about 30 mins and went to apply more coats. The end result was a blotchy, uneven, rough mess even though my chairs were nicely prepped. I thought I just needed more layers so I went out to buy 2 more cans of this stuff and layered on more coats but again, same rough finish. I'm going to try to sand the chairs down and just use traditional paint instead, but that's money down the drain.

It sounds like you're experiencing dry spray with Rust-Oleum Specialty Lacquer Spray paint. This is when the product dries before it hits the surface of your project. This occurs most often when users hold the can too far from the surface when spraying - our recommendation is 10-16" from the surface. Effects of dry spray can also happen when temperatures are too high or too low. You can try using a lint free rag slightly damp, and gently wipe the surface to remove the dusting. If it's still rough after doing that, you'll want to sand the surface with a 180 or 220 grit sandpaper and make sure it's clean and dry before recoating.

Absolutely THE WORST spray paint I ever used, and I've used a lot!! Coverage is terrible, even after hours spent priming/sealing and sanding perfectly smooth. All the work I put into finishing the surface before spraying was a complete waste of my time and effort! I was unable to get a smooth finish no matter how light or wet I applied it. I've been using rattle cans for decades, this is the worst!!

I painted the cabinet pulls with it lacquers always good for fast drying where you don't have to wait 24 hours you have to have a little different painting technique with lacquer but it works great once you learn how I usually clean any metal with lacquer thinner not to where it's gummy just to clean it then shoot it once for a primer then shoot it an hour later for a final coat I am a professional cabinet finisher so I'm used to doing this procedure

I returned all my Valspar lacquer and bought this. The spray pattern out of the nozzle is far superior to the Vlaspar product which dripped all over my custom maple barn doors. The other product leaked from multiple cans however the spray from the Rustoleum cans was perfect.

I use this all the time for small woodworking and woodcarving projects and it works great. It's been my go-to for many years now. It dries quickly, so you can touch it to re-position and re-coat in 10 minutes or less. Great stuff!

                  Not my best choice
I bought this spray paint to complete a restoration project on an exterior light. When I used it, I got like an ash residue that needed to be brushed away as soon as it was dry enough to do so. I used a different type of spray paint on the outside of the light that turned out beautiful. After the first coat failed.. I bought a different type of pain to finish my project. Crossing my fingers that Im not ripping down this light next year to redo the inside.

It sounds like what you are experiencing is what we call “’dryspray”. This is when the paint mist from the aerosol can dries in the air and lands on the painted surfaces. Where this ‘dryspray’ or ‘overspray’ lands it prevents the coating from leveling out properly and can leave a dull or textured finish like you are describing. Some factors that can cause dryspray include painting in direct sunlight or in very warm or windy conditions or holding the can too far away from the surface or at an uneven distance while spraying. It can also occur when painting large, flat surfaces or intricate objects with a lot of open space. Remove the dryspray by sanding the surface with an 180-220 grit sandpaper and reapply taking the above factors into consideration. Rustoleum

                  Lacquer spray paint worked gret
I needed a high gloss paint that covered the wood for a gift box I was making for my niece's wedding. The wood had a lot of eyes in it and required good coverage so they would not show up through the layer of satin fabric and lace. A friend told me to use the white lacquer spray paint. It sprayed on easily and the paint did not run. I was very pleased with the result.

                  Very happy
Excuse the mess, my kitchen is a work-in-progress. I built this table from bare wood to support 240lbs of granite and wanted to match my prefinished Home Depot kitchen cabinets as close as possible. White lacquer seemed like the way to go and I think the finish is very close. Bare wood likes to drink up a lot of product, so multiple coats are necessary as you would expect. The lacquer goes on super smooth and dries fast enough for a the second coat to be applied at the starting point with no wait. Take your time and you can achieve excellent results with very little effort.

I love this product. It has great coverage and dries to the touch in 5 minutes or less. I use it on all my handcrafted returning boomerangs. I have tried many other brands but non are comparable. The price is very reasonable as well. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

I bought it because the project, on which I was working, called for a spray lacquer, and it was what Home Depot had. I liked that I could re-coat any time. Once fully cured, the project looked very good.
