Good grass seed, BUT, you need to wait until your soil temps are at a steady MINIMUM of 65 degrees F before putting it down. Then, just water it at least twice per day and keep it lightly wet for around two weeks or so. If you ever let it dry out when it's hot out before it sprouts, it could die, so be SURE to keep it wet until sprouting. Check soil temps right here: http://www.greencastonline.com/tools/soil-temperature

I had great success using this grass seed this fall to fill in some areas. I aerated, threw down a thin layer of leaf compost, then the seed and Lesco starter fertilizer. Then water everyday for a month. Here are my before and after pics. Would def recommend.

We are sorry to hear about your disappointment in the product. We completely understand the frustration with the price, but we do not set the final retail prices. Seedlings will begin to emerge in 5-10 days under ideal conditions. This is not when all of the seed will germinate just when the grass will first start coming up. If you are interested in discussing your situation further, please feel free to contact us at 877-220-3089. scotts

This seed has had an uphill battle from the beginning - there was powdered concrete and contractor sand in location I could not get rid of regardless of screen or tilling. So we are still waiting. There are also 3 other types of seeds in there and the conditions are alkaline (not good) I watch, baby, fiddle, etc like old mother hen in there. Will not use lawn mower on her, only shears and should wait until next year. I am out there at 5:00 am checking progress. Insanity, I guess.

We are sorry that you are unhappy with Scotts Turf Builder Sun & Shade Mix. Grass seeds emerge when continuous warmth and moisture is provided. It is important to be conscious of applying herbicides prior to beginning a seeding project because weed controls prevent seeds from germinating. We offer a product guarantee because we want you to be confident when using our product. Call us at 877-220-3089 if you would like to discuss this further. scotts

Best grass seed I've ever used
I tried many different types of seeds before this but will only ever use this one from now on. My front receives a lot of sun and my backyard receives mostly shade and this seed has grown the best so far. After ripping up my front yard, and replanting, my lawn looks the best that its ever looked

My lawn died and didn't come back this spring, not sure why. After learning the hard way last year where dropping this seed and casual watering resulted in no success to repair brown patches, this year, I took the time to rough-rake the entire yard to loosen the topping and pull up a lot of the dead grass thatch. Next, I spread the seed per the directions for a new lawn, and covered with a light layer (1/8" or so) of Scotts Lawn Builder top soil, I also used Scotts New Lawn Starter Fertilizer. You have to water this seed every day, or it will not germinate, and the seed should be mixed into the top layer of loosened soil so the wet soil keeps the seeds damp. Just stay consistent with watering, and it should germinate in a week or two. In the picture where the grass is dense, it was fairly heavily seeded at the beginning of the season when I thought the rest of the lawn would bounce back. That seed has been growing for a little over a month now, and looking great. The brown areas I raked up and seeded about a week before the photo was taken, in the other photo you can just see the beginnings of a few blades of grass growing, it has since continued to fill in gradually. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that this seed is expensive, and it's too easy for it to fail. If you're on your game with watering, and you've prepped the soil so the seeds are just sitting on top of hard dirt, it should work. As weird looking as the blue seeds are, it's really helpful to let you see where it's still exposed versus after you've sufficiently covered it with top soil. If the coating is really helping to retain water, that's a plus, because even with that coating, you have to water a lot to get it to germinate. As long as it continues to grow and fill in, it will have met my expectations, so time will tell.

READ THIS IF YOU WANT A GRASS SEED TO WORK It worked for me contrary to other reviews probably because of good preparation. My wife told me we were in zone 6 (New York) so I looked around and read stuff about grass that grows in our zone and when to start seeding. April turns out to be the best time here. I found out that this one works in zone 6 and because our lawn has a lot of shade. This is what i did. 1. Rented a Klassen Power Rake from HD and dethatched our lawn and manual raked it and did it twice. 2. Sowed the seeds evenly with a handheld spreader... be generous. 3. Added a thin layer of Peat Moss by hand. You can also rent a peat moss spreader if you want. 4. Installed "Orbit 1-hose faucet timer" with "Y Shut-Off 2-Way Metal Hose Connector" attached to two hose and two "Melnor Oscillating Sprinker". I set the timer to run the faucet at 1pm as that would probably be the driest time of the day and you can only set Orbit faucet time once a day. There are times that i would run the sprinkler manually once or twice a day early morning and late afternoon if the lawn looks dry. If its raining turn off the timer. Goodluck!

Using the combination of Turf Builder 40 lb grass seed, Scotts Ezseed, Turf Builder lawn soil and multiple fertilizers from Scotts the lawn was dramatically transformed from barely grass to bright green full thick lawn. So far I have used this across my front and back yard expecting pretty good results. I may be impatient because it has only been two weeks. But the seed has not been growing at all. Maybe I did something wrong along the way but I followed the instructions on the back as well as possible and watered frequently. So far it looks like none of the seeds have germinated. I can see the seeds on some bare spots of my lawn not doing anything. Pretty disappointing considering I spent around $150 on seed expecting some good results if I put in the work.

The proof is in the pics
The proof is in the pictures. First pic is on Day 0, after prep and application. Second pic is at 2 weeks. Third pic is after 4 weeks. Scotts works perfectly, but you need to put in the time and prep correctly. There is no miracle seed that allows you to just "throw down seed" and water. This is the third time I've planted a lawn (or major portions of one) and the trick is in the prep. 1. Loosen the soil where you will be applying the seed. Make sure soil is loose at least 2" deep... not just the very top. 2. OVERSEED. Put down so much seed you do not see dirt. This is the one step I deviate from the "bag instructions". I believe more seed is better. 3. Work seed into dirt. This step is not included in the bag, but I believe it makes a huge difference. Working the seeds into the dirt provides cover and protection from the elements (sun, water, etc.). Don't work in too deep. Just a gentle mix. Yes, there will be seeds on the top of the dirt that aren't fully worked-in. It's ok. 4. WATER!!! For the lawn in this picture, I watered twice a day... once before work (say 500A) and once when I returned home (say 430P). I watered for about 15-20mins each time. Just until it was damp. The lawn pictured required this much water, since it is in direct sunlight all day and the top of the soil was dry by the time I returned home from work.

Great results but need to do the work!
Over the winter, our lawn completly died and was dug up by the plow. We corrected it all with scotts products! Every where we went merchants said scotts had the best product on the market! So, we did a soil test, added lime to balance ph, raked dead grass out, added scotts top soil, scotts lawn starter and scotts lawn seed. After that, we watered the lawn twice a day for 3 weeks! Results speak for them selves! In just 3 weeks!

                  Good product
I used a hand spreader to apply this to my bare yard for initial seeding and it worked quite well. I had to apply a second bag after a couple of weeks due to bare spots, most of those spots are filling in but I still have some work to do, considering this seed is not meant to fill in a brand new yard I think it did a great job. I live in a brand new neighborhood and I was the only person to not do either hydro seed or sod and my lawn looks as good, if not better than others who hydro seeded, plus it was less expensive. Seeding in my area of the country is not easy considering the high winds and inconsistent weather. One day it will be 35 degrees and the next it can be 85 degrees but I still managed the seed to grow with reasonable expectations. I have to mention that I did follow the directions as closely as possible, I had a fence up to block any wind, my sprinklers ran on a timer with no dry times/spots and I applied it during early spring when it didn't get overwhelmingly hot.

Did not germinate in perfect weather (and with a sprinkler system)
Planted in accordance with the manufacturers instructions in perfect weather (cool damp spring in the Northeast, and I have an automatic sprinkler system). Very disappointing, because I have been a Scotts customer for as long as I have gardened. Now I have to spot sod in late May.

We apologize that you have experienced problems while using Scotts Turf Builder Bermudagrass Seed. It is certainly frustrating to go through all the work of reseeding an area, only to have the results less than satisfactory. This is not the typical quality that is expected from us and our products, and we have sent this to our Quality Assurance Department. In the meantime, we can provide some tips for future seeding efforts that have been helpful to some of our consumers in the past.

The seeds must be in direct contact with the soil to germinate properly. Our Research Department has told us that if seed is laid on top of old grass without ensuring that the seed reaches the soil, you will have about a 2% germination rate. Temperature is also critical. Bermudagrass requires soil temperatures of at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit to grow on schedule. Many weed controls can also inhibit seed germination, so if a pesticide was used in a seeded area then it can cause problems to a seeding project.

We would like to discuss this issue further with you. At your earliest convenience, we ask that you call us so that we can discuss both the issue and our product guarantee. Our phone number is 877-220-3089 and we ask that you refer to your review when calling. scotts

                  Green grass just in time
After fully excavating my yard and putting down new Loom about 50 yards of it. I planted this grass seed 3 1/2 weeks ago. I went threw about 4 80 pound bags. I used a spreader and went over the hole yard twice changing direction as I went. Water twice a day and started seeing grass in four days. Some ares grew fast than others. Sunny areas took longer than the shady ones. But I have full grass now and it's strong!! Very in pleased.

                    Worked great!
I'm not sure why all these other poor raters failed with this grass seed, but I just mowed mine in less than 3 weeks. I laid top soil over an entire backyard in northern Idaho that had bare spots, some grass, gets beat by pine needles and cones, shrubs I removed like Oregon Grape, over a sawed off fence post, and even moss that was sprayed and mostly removed. Some of the lawn gets a lot of sun and some only a little through the tall ponderosa pines that surround the area. I mean this ground area was neglected and rough. The top soil was not fertilized or finely screened and had rocks visible still. The grass germinated on day 5 as described by Scotts and I'd estimate about 90% of the yard saw growth on this first round. The first few days I made darn sure it was watered in the morning, mid-day, and in the evening and checked my sprinkler system coverage thoroughly before seeding or even laying down the soil. We had daytime temps ranging from low 70's to upper 90's and it still succeeded. I used a broadcast spreader then went back over with some hand tossing (like rice at a wedding!) to cover areas that were missed. Is it perfect? No, but life isn't either. Are other grass seed brands comparable? Probably, but I stick with Scotts as it has always proven it's worth to me. I just pulled some of the larger weeds by hand, laid down some new grass fertilizer by Scotts, and reseeded a few spots that haven't seen growth. I'll hit it with some granular weed killer in a few weeks and be ready for the fall maintenance come late September or early October. I'm attaching a photo taken this morning just under 3 weeks from seeding. I'm stoked and encouraged the lawn will be great. Prep is the key here along with some patience, it's not a chia pet. Great job Scotts!

                    Wasted Money !
After reading more than I care to about grass seed , I thought I would try Scotts Turf Builder grass seed . It had been years since I had planted any grass and the local produced seed was no longer available . It was called Northwest Playground mix . When I used it I did almost zero prep on our glacial gravel except for removing larger rocks . And I watered it occasionally . I had to mow it in just over 3 weeks . This time I prepped by triple tilling down about 6" and then putting a top coat of 3 way top soil down . After over seeding and raking it in , I watered twice a day for the first 3 weeks and then went to a early morning soaking . Temps were perfect with highs between 60-85 . I am now about 6 weeks since I planted and other than some volunteer grass , only a few of Scotts seeds germinted . The only good thing is that the blue color kept most of the birds from feeding on it . Now I "get to" start over with someone elses seed , not what I wanted to have to do .

We are sorry to hear the grass seed didn't grow as expected. Water is an important factor in successful seeding. The newly seeded areas must be kept constantly moist for weeks on end. Allowing the soil to dry out even for an hour during the critical germination phase can result in seedling death. Temperatures must be at least least 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

                    Beyond disappointed with this seed
I just finished spending 2 months preparing and landscaping my yard, sprayed the lawn with herbicide back on March 8th. After the grass was dead, I proceeded to till the lawn, install the retaining wall and begin the leveling of the yard. I went so far as to remove the top 6 inches of soil and strain out all the rocks and grass/weed roots. The yard was watered everyday to keep the dust down, and 7 weeks after the herbicide application I still had no weeds growing. Then I proceeded to seed the lawn, applied the seed as per the Scott's instructions, then applied the Scott's New Lawn fertilizer, and a cover of Scott's Top Soil. Now 20 days later I have the ugliest lawn I have ever seen, I have patches of grass and HUGE bare spots...and now I find out that the Scott's Sun and Shade is a cool climate grass.....Why isn't this mentioned on the packaging? I live in Southern California, and I wouldn't exactly call this a cool climate. If it's a cool climate grass, why do they sell it in warmer climates? I bought the Scott's Broadcast Spreader, 2 bags of seed (to cover 1800 square feet of lawn), the Scott's New Lawn fertilizer and their Top Soil......money was a complete WASTE!!!!! Needless to say, I am completely disgusted with Scott's products, and will never recommend them to anyone......not even my worst enemy!

I'm in Northern VA and I have been trying to use a Tall Fescue seed to fix bare/dog spots and it just didn't work. I purchased this Sun /Shade product and reseeded my bare spots on 1-23. 20 days later it is up 1/4 inch and looks great. I know it was early but we had plenty of rain and not too cold. I took a chance and it's gonna work out!

                        This product is horrible
Don’t waste your money, but a no name brand or CIL product. My second time disappointed. I reseeded a an area of my front lawn. The store only had Scotts, I reluctantly purchased a bag. A week later, I reseeded part of my backyard lawn with a No Name brand. 7-8 days later the NoName brand showed signs of growth, nothing on the Scotts area. The watering process was the same for both areas. 3 weeks later No Name brand is showing great signs of growth. The Scotts nothing. Reseeded the Scotts area with the noname brand. 7-8 days later grass growth in the front yard.

I bought a bag of this and it did not work at all. Nothing grew. I worked the soil after my lawn was cut but the grass seed down raked and watered the grass. Nothing grew. Very disappointed. I will figure something out for next year.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix with Root-Building Nutrition and appreciate your feedback. Depending on conditions and the seed type, the grass can take from 6 to 14 days to start to germinate. Germination requires air temperatures consistently above 65 degrees F. Cool nighttime temperatures and fluctuating temperatures will slow germination. Cold weather will delay germination but will not hurt the seed. Both excessive moisture and not enough moisture can inhibit seed germination. If a weed control is used around the time of seeding, it will either prevent the seeds from germination outright or destroy the seedlings as they emerge. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 888-270-3714 if we can further assist.
