If the lawn is not our of dormancy (totally green), fertilizer should not be applied and in some cases can cause damage to grass. The most common reason a lawn does not respond to fertilizer is soil pH. Soil pH must be between 5.5-7.5 for fertilizer to be absorbed by the grass. We recommend performing a soil pH test. If the lawn isn't receiving an inch of water per week, then the lawn will not green up as fast. Thatch over 1/2" thick prevents the nutrients from getting to the plant roots.
