I used to modify some plumbing in my basement. A section burst after 3 years. Putting this pipe behind a wall seems foolish.

Very easy to use and work with
I have been using PEX piping in my remodel and I am very happy with the quality of the product. I was worried it would not hold up like copper does but in fact I think this product is superior to copper. Much easier to work with and you do not have to solder.

      So far so good
The real value of this piping is it's lifetime of service. If it develops leaks in the next 20 years, then it's a poor investment, if no leaks then a great investment. This white piping replaced old grey PEX piping that leaked. This white piping has a narrower inside diameter than the grey PEX, this makes it more difficult when fitting to grey PEX fittings. This white PEX is thicker and stiffer than the grey PEX and seems to be of better quality.

      So far, so good
I removed all the copper from our home and replaced it with about 150 feet of PEX (3/4" and 1/2"). Making connections with shark-bite fittings is much more difficult than sliding the shark-bites onto copper. Removing the fittings from PEX is also much more difficult. The thicker PEX tube has to be perfectly aligned with the shark-bite fitting, whereas with copper you have a little more leeway in tight spaces. I got around this by filing a very small portion of the PEX around the inner and outer portion of the tube. The shark-bites slide over the initial tube opening much easier this way, and then more force can drive the pipe and fitting together completely. No leaks so far. It's been 4 weeks. Water pressure at all the sinks and showers has not changed after installing all of this PEX. I was worried PEX lines would carry less water if I were to use crimp fittings but by using the shark bites, which do not narrow the pipe as much as crimp fittings do, we have good water flow (for both hot and cold). If this holds up for a year, I would give this 5 stars but after such a short time, I give it a 4 so far. The price was good. The entire replacement cost was about $300 (pipe and fittings), and the salvage yard paid $110 for the old copper. Again, PEX durability is uncertain, so I don't know if cheap equals good. (I kept a few feet of copper pipe near the water heater because I was worried heat exposure of the PEX near the exhaust would cause aging/cracking of the PEX. I kept the PEX at least a foot away from the heat vent and put insulation over the PEX - even the cold line - to help reduce exposure to any excessive heat.)
