Good thickness and strong angle. The nail holes are kind of little small for 10D nails, but you can make it work. Just have to hit hammer hard. It probably removes nail zinc coating.

Great way to secure the joist to the rim to prevent movement. Nails hold better in the edge grain vs end grain. They're not going to pull out easily.
